Just three weeks after Cyclone Gabrielle ripped through the area, I was able to walk on the first re-opened track at Te Mata Peak, my backyard training ground and favourite place to walk. This is a video record of the damage I was able to see. Other places in the park are far worse, but obviously blocked off to foot traffic until safety is restored. Many thanks to all those who have worked so hard to clear the debris and re-instate the tracks.

I’ve been up there several times now and every time there are workers up there doing great mahi. One thing we always see in nature is that new growth rises from destruction. It will be interesting to see this process up close and personal.

Good on you for walking up to the top instead of waiting until you could take a car.

I live up the peak just below the peak house and we have a lot of trees to cut up and lots of slips to clean up one of the big trees in the video at 3:38 seconds it is more than 1 meter wide hope you did well in the cyclone

I was just up there recently after being out of town for 6 weeks. Even though heaps of work has been done, there is still so much more to do! Were you at your house during the cyclone? If so, that must have been a really rough time for you!

I was up the peak yesterday there's slips all over everywhere. Also when you reach the summit and you look at the surrounding maunga like Kahuranaki and Kohinerakau there's slips everywhere scarring the landscapes. Could see near 100 + slips
