Tea Break Fix - Faulty Old ROBIN MULTIMETER Repair

Hi, in this Tea Break Fix I look at my old Robin Multimeter which I have had since the 1990s. It used to work but when I went to use it recently, it showed no signs of life, even with new batteries. Can it be fixed?

In January of 2000 Robin UK was acquired by Fluke Europe, you can find a few testers branded as Robin Fluke like the 1652 Multi Function Tester. Shortly after the acquisition many of the core Robin team left & started Kewtech which still design & manufacture electrical test equipment to this day.

Great video, my OM1000 up and running again. BUT NOTE - before you start, scroll to 8:40 and note the little black carbon contacts that you will lose if you don't spot them!! Mine are lost - beep didn't work! I rolled silver foil into two tiny tubes and managed to insert them instead. All good, what a fix!

I really like these tea break fixes! Shorter videos to watch before bed, but still just as interesting! It's pretty wild how well made some of these older products are to stay functional for as long as they have.

Very nice fix :) I have yellow multimeter too from late 90's, but mine is Biltema brand, and simpler one, for example it doesn't have the beeper. Couple of years ago one lead broke off inside the insulator because of corrosion, so haven't used it anymore. Got a new multimeter, but haven't thrown the old one away. Maybe I'll find new leads for it. It has a 9V battery inside it and replacing it requires opening the case.

Im curious how you determine if a fix is a tea break fix.. I assumed earlier that it was after the fact based on the time taken, but that doesnt seem to be the case.. Do you just educated guess and set a limit? What if a tea break fix takes longer than expected?

Educated guess really and then if it is longer than expected then I have to edit it heavily. I have a 'tea break fix' Internet radio coming up in a couple of weeks that should have been a trying to fix due to the length of time it took👍👍👍

I'm an electrician by trade, we had all Robin testers and we later upgraded to Fluke which were labelled as both Fluke Robin. Always my favourite brand for test equipment.

Great work as always Vince! By chance would you maybe revisit it some time and put on the new leads you had mentioned? I would honestly love to see it fully restored. Oh and a little advice for the back of it from a painters point of view. Take some matte varnish and put a couple coats on it. Just on the outside, not the inside. It will help it stay clean, and also it works as a bit of a protectant from the elements, which will intern keep it working longer. If you ever want to give it a go. But I enjoyed the video, as I do with all of them. Keep up the great work, and looking forward to the next Rolls video! God Bless my friend.

Was a tad more than a tea break fix but I certainly enjoyed it. I do lament over the loss somewhere of a meter I had from 1988, my first auto-ranging LCD one. No idea where I lost it. Nice to see the Hakko making an appearance, hope you're finding it a useful addition. Thanks again for the entertainment.

Thanks for watching Paul. I'm loving the Hakko, definitely more powerful at transferring the heat than my old one AND heats up super quick. I haven't used it that much due to the car taking over my life, but as the weather turns cold and wet the blue mat videos will be back with gusto👍👍👍

@@Mymatevince moving to the heater-in-cartridge system is definitely a big shift from the old style; makes it hard to go back too. I ended up buying a second one so that I could have both the normal size tips and a micro pencil at the same time. While they're not the top-grade gear ( like JBC ) I'm certainly not regretting my investment.

@@Mymatevince Should be interesting, 0201 parts will be no trouble now. I do often have to use my hotair station at 250'C to give it a heat-assist so that the PCB doesn't overburden the tip in terms of heat drain. Will be interesting to see what you use it on first.

I do allot of electrical work on motorcycles and automotive, I am totally dependent on my multi meter. Goes to show how much we take these things for granted! Had to re-wire my motorcycle after doing a paint job and needed my meter to trace wiring and test circuits. Would have been a nightmare without a meter!

Even though I have a modern new Lidl's crimp set and stripper claws my main go to is an old old British Rail "duckbill" stripper that you can by feel alone strip as much or as little as you want and these things must be from the 60's or 70's and apart from stoning the wire cutter section and a gentle stoning on the cutty part of the duckbill's jaws and a drop of steam compound oil in the movey bits, the thing is like new in action. I don't get on with the modern claw type, very fiddly to get it right and the adjustment on the length is too easily moved which can be tedious having to reset it each strip.

@16:28 - The meter beep. I used to be able to here the beeps from your meters, but I am completely unable to hear them now. I'm not sure if it's the mic or the camera changes, but it's totally inaudible to me any more.

I’m guessing the potentiometer is to zero your test leads when measuring ohms.

Probably as you say, but I'd guess set at the factory as you wouldn't be pulling the plastic coating off to adjust it normally.

hello, I have BK Precision 390A, my multimeter starts to beep as soon as I turn it on. there is 0.6v volts on the buzzer all the time. fuses are good. any ideas?

Is that the multimeter I suggested all them years ago on soldering some needles to the probes as you were struggling with crossed terminals on some of the electronics you were working on at the time? Wished you could come and fix my broken yellow Robin, the Relianty type as its got a broken A frame and a £300 new part of hoping my garages welder can pull some magic out of his machines and weld in a new section, just done the kingpin and wheel bearing, drives like a roller skate on black ice... verra dangerous :(

6:19 don't do that, it's a mistake, you are removing the nickel coating from the contacts. You just need to clean and polish it. Unused devices should have the batteries removed to prevent this accumulation of dirt.

You need a multimeter to diagnose a multimeter, the definition of irony, I thought you were going to desolder the wires with a magnifying glass and the sun we are having in the U.K. haha
