This gum was made buy Clark. The theme music was by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass origianly entitled the Mexican Shuffle renamed the Teaberry Shuffle
Hands down, one of the best advertising campaigns EVER. I think just about everyone who watched TV in the 60s can recall this commercial fondly. The Herb Alpert song, the cute little dance, the whole tongue-in-cheek tone - it was an irresistible combination.
Not only do I recall this but I saw the various ads so many times that I learned and perfected the step. I'll have to re-watch this a few dozen times to see if I can recover the moves. So many things lost from childhood that I'd love to have back. And I'm not anywhere near old yet.
Years ago, I was warned to be careful coming off the porch as there was an icy patch. Evidently my great uncle had stepped on it earlier and broken into 'The Teaberry Shuffle'. I've found myself laughing randomly over the decades at the image of a 70 something man trying not to fall with that tune in my head.
Man, how i loved that gum! I once had my mother buy me a huge pack of Clark's Teaberry Gum at a K-Mart. I wish they still had this & Beeman's Pepsin gum!
Howard B. Chak Hey Howard,do you remember the General Mills Country Corn flakes commercial? Dial it up here...."60 commercials ....its right after the old Colt 45 beer commercial. You howl....I remembered it right away, watched it 12x
I bought this today at a Meijer liking the Kitchy design of the package but not knowing how it tastes. I like it. I had to look it up when I got home. Thanks for posting.
In early 1965, Clark Gum {then owned by Philip Morris} was looking for a different way to "pitch" its 'Teaberry' flavored gum. Someone at their ad agency heard the Tijuana Brass' "Mexican Shuffle", and decided that music was perfect. The campaign followed, and the song (and "Teaberry Gum") became a hit...
Alpert lucked into the big money with this! He found an original sound and sold all manner of albums and commercials , not to mention T.V. spots and endorsements. He went on to found A&R Records.
You can get this in the Boston area and in Rhode Island and Southeastern MA if you go to the Newbury Comics CD store chain. They sell all those Clark gum products right up near the register - Blackjack, Teaberry, Beeman's (the wintergreen gum).
I loved Clove gum as a kid, too (still do) my father worked at the company that made it (American Chicle) so I always had a case handy - haha Chiclets, Dentyne, Beeman's, Adams and so many others, but Clove was No. 1 with me
This was one of Alpert's earlier hits as I recall. Without looking it up, I'd guess from memory that it came after The Lonely Bull and before A Taste of Honey. But yes, it was a jingle first, then a hit.
@timdub70 Back then, the league penalizing and fining that guy would have been the LEAST of his worries after getting his ears yelled off by the coach.
Holy Cow! All this talk about a 1960's commercial about a gum??!! I can believe what our country has become. Everybody is racist??? Holy Cow! It's a freakin gum commercial!!
@bigleroygym That's too funny. If an old gum commercial stirs that much hate in you, you must be a real laugh at parties. Is your name Cornel West? Saying, "I hate X people as a group" makes you a de facto bigot, not necessarily a racist. What I really hate is that I often think the same thing when I see "ultra-white" stuff like this.
