Puppy biting is one of the most irritating parts of getting a new puppy. Even though Labradors are known for having soft mouths, they do not come that way.

Same, this technique is all over the internet and only seems to work with certain dogs maybe ones who arent very biteyto begin with. Mine is very bitey and this technique only excites him more. No solutions so far but I'm now trying to timeout technique where you remove attention and put him in the other room for a few minutes when he gets rough. Still not great but works better than the "ow" method

My 5month old female lab is the same way! Yelling ow is NOT working at all! I will even put her in her crate for a few minutes, but as soon as she gets back out she is excited and right back to biting. My husband and I are the only ones she does this to. Everyone else she just jumps on and gets excited by sniffing and licking them. I don't know what else to do

My lab is now 3 months old. Apart from regular play biting, he suddenly starts playing rough. This involves snarling, growling and hard biting. He doesn't let go. Yelping doesn't help. I can't ignore and walk away because he will follow me and bite me. If I distract him with a toy, he uses it for about 10 seconds and starts biting again. He doesn't accept the toy again. The lips curl up really far exposing his teeth. This is accompanied with loud growling. He starts doing this when I play tug as well.
@DogFocusTraining
@DogFocusTraining 4 года назад
Try giving him a “time-out” by putting him on a leash and tying him off some where just out of your reach. Then let him come play again and if he continues playing too rough, then back on the leash. Ultimately, if he continues then you can put him in the crate for a longer time out. See if that approach helps

I've got cuts and bite marks all over lol my new black lab puppy is now almost 5 months old, he gets in these moods where he will start staring at me then starts to bark, snarling and show his teeth, then lunging in to bite. this has been going on regularly since he turned 3 months. I have been told this is definitely a Lab thing and he will grow out of this in about 5-6 months. The only way I have been able to diffuse him is to throw kibble treats around and make him " find" them, this works really good but after a while he is back to this bad behavior. I had one other Lab years ago and he never did this kind of thing. Thanks for your video i learned a lot, Peace !

Stop playing with her when she bites. If she continues, do a short time out in her crate. Don’t make it a punishment, just the result of biting. Also, make sure you have something for her to chew on that you can give her when she gets nippy. Her mouth is sore and chewing and biting relieves some of that discomfort. Let me know if that helps.

How is this going? If you still have issues, when your dog gets aggressive (more playful), put her in timeout on a leash tied to a stair banister or something outside. Wait a couple minutes and then try and play with her again. If she bites again, back to time out. It may take a couple weeks, but eventually she will understand that biting stops play rather than continues it.

I literally have to put her to bed or she doesn't stop to lay down at all... She will go and go and go.. I run her around outside. @DogFocusTraining

Labs are bred to use their mouths. That is one reason why they have a tendency to chew more than other breeds. They sometimes do it out of boredom. One of the best things you can do is help her understand what is okay to chew on when she gets the craving. Find a toy or something that is “chewable” and use that to replace whatever she is chewing on. Then pour on the praise. Give her positive feedback anytime she goes to that chew toy rather than your shoes or fingers.

I'm struggling with my 10 week old goldendoodle. She was weaned from her mother early due to aggression toward litter by the mother. Seems like she came to me with no bite inhibition. When I say owww or ouch, she follows up with a stronger bite. (Yelping has done this too---seems like she gets overexcited easily). I've tried to keep my hand/feet limp when she does it, but she latches on and starts shaking it like it's a chew toy. It seems like it's reinforcing the intensity and frequency of that behavior rather than stopping or reducing it. Redirection and time outs seem like they give us space to try again, but frequency and strength of biting is not decreasing. Any other suggestions for a parent of a persistent nipper? I'm assuming consistency is the key---but I want to be consist with the right strategies.

@DogFocusTraining
@DogFocusTraining 3 года назад
You don’t have to let your puppy hurt you. If he keeps playing rough (especially if he is drawing blood), then you can put him in time out. I like to use a leash tied to something he can’t move and keep him just out of reach. Then you can wait a few minutes and play with him again. If he continues to bite hard (and he will for a bit), then put him on the leash again or even in his crate.

Labs are naturally “mouthy” for two reasons. First, your dog will be teething for the next two months or so. Her teeth hurt and she needs something to alleviate that discomfort. Second, they are a retrieving breed so they are bred to put things in their mouths. Just keep working this process and she will get there. Make sure that you have a chew toy for her to focus on when she starts biting things she should not be.

I recently saw a video that recommended pushing a puppy's lips against their own teeth after they've bitten too hard as a way of making them realise how sharp their teeth are. What are your thoughts on that?
@bobbiwhiskers1854
@bobbiwhiskers1854 3 года назад
that works when done carefully. You have to react like their mom would, or another well adjusted adult dog, or even a littermate. A pup bites too hard, mom or sister would bite back, and the pup would feel it. I do a little pinch of the lip against a tooth and put a little pressure, without saying anything. Some pups need a little more, and might give a little yelp. Like, oh I just got stung by a bee! And I don't react, except maybe look down, and communicate "oh yes, sometimes those pants bite back", or those fingers or those toes. It is not okay to puppy nip any part of me. My puppies learn that very early, with no problem. If they puppy nip, quick "nip" back, and without paying any attention to pup, keep doing what I was doing. They learn quickly. They don't get attention for nipping. They don't get a reaction from me, with an "OUCH" (that's cool man, they got a big reaction!!!!) and they are never rewarded for nipping or biting with a treat or a toy. I correct, ignore, do something else. Then a couple minutes later, interact with pup, maybe teaching sit, for a treat. I've raised pups for 50 years, and never had an ongoing problem with puppy nipping. When I raise a litter, they know not to chew on humans before they leave, and are just as happy, well adjusted, and playful as any pup who hasn't gone through early NO NIP correction. They just don't nip or bite.

I also have a 9year old son. So I am afraid to let her near my son. What to do?

Help your son learn how to give your dog a chew toy if she starts to bite. If your dog is aggressive towards your son, then you should get a professional trainer to help you deal with that behavior in person so that you all stay safe.

Care to teach us how you taught him what "Ow" means so that he stops biting? You never did that in this video. You seem to just have assumed that we've already trained that.

Very very helpful video 👍. I'm gonna give it a try with my 45 day old pup 🐾
