Jesse Cannon provides an in-depth guide for musicians on how to understand and leverage social media algorithms to grow their music audience. It covers the basics of how algorithms work, including user modeling and music genomes, and offers practical strategies for artists to increase their visibility on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Spotify. The video emphasizes the importance of making connections with other artists, using relevant hashtags, and engaging with the music community. It also highlights the power of collaboration, features, and remixes in building algorithmic ties that can lead to increased recommendations and ultimately, more listeners. The presenter concludes by stressing the significance of understanding one's niche genre and actively participating in the community to escape 'algorithmic jail' and achieve significant growth.

Hey Jesse, I have kind of a long comment, I’ve asked a version of this to you before, but realized I left out kind of a crucial detail, hopefully you read all this lol. So I’m a touring musician in the lofi emo scene, I’ve played just over 100 shows in 11 different countries in North America, Europe and Asia over the past 2 years. In 2022 I was asked to be a part of a covers compilation for a really big artist in my niche (Crywank) that to this day gets 100’s of saves every week. The problem is the other artists on this comp are a total mish mash genre wise and I believe that even 2 years later it’s totally confused the algorithm for me. I’ve done a colab with another really big artist in my niche (mage tears) and along with constantly touring I’ve worked hard to develop connections on the internet with other artists in my community and even gone to their respective cities, particularly in the US and Germany, to play with them, but still there are bands in my fans also like section that really feel like they shouldn’t be there. My question is what would you do if you were in my position to retrain the algorithm so to speak? I’ve heard you mention advertising a playlist with my desired algorithmic links, but honestly with all the touring I’m completely broke and can’t really afford an ad campaign that will really make a dent. Anyways thanks for your time and all the info as always! Love the channel

Damn that could actuslly affect you. I'm a shoegaze artist who has dabbled in death metal. Every noise at once shows me spotify sees me as purely an extreme metal artist. I no longer make purely extreme metal music. This is a problem, hopefully he talks on how to fix this. My best advice would be to use a playlist to promotoe music with srtist strictly similar to yours and dissasocite with those genre conpletely.

@@voidtofillNC ya it’s frustrating because that comp basically kept my streams afloat for a year, but now it’s totally screwing me over. I’ve done the thing with running ads for a playlist, but I can’t afford to drop 1-2 grand in advertisements when I need to pay poster / art designers, travel costs for tours, rent etc… so I don’t really know what to do other than keep hustling, but I’m worried that this is going to keep me from actually growing :/
@commuted9538

Because the algorithms reward exponentially more those who make more popular content. So there is not an equal distribution of views, and who wins, wins it all. Simple. So to emerge one needs not only to make good content, but content which is better than those who are already on top.
@Musformation

It’s that. Small missteps do mess up and honestly not everyone’s music hits people. Not all music is up to par or sometimes there’s character or delivery flaws that feel off

Also, you can't JUST frame it as W or L.... yes, you can maximize your reach (I'm for sure working on some of those things)- but to some extent, progression isn't linear and you might just have to put that work in and fight past the plateau

For Reels specifically, I've noticed a lot of people saying it's not good to use the same hashtags over and over anymore. Is this true? How would you suggest to train the algorithm when it seems it punishes users for copy pasting the same hashtags over and over?
@Musformation
@Musformation 4 месяца назад
I think the misperception here is that they hashtag the same thing when doing something different where the hashtag should witch up. For example they hashtag their genre when the video is a makeup tutorial and they normally promote their music. Whenever people show me evidence of this it’s things like that and they don’t get the context 🤷‍♂️

This will sound quite pretentious but it's a genuine question, what if you're trying to create something "new", or at least something that doesn't entirely match a clearly defined pre-existing niche, both in terms of sonic palette but also visual identity...etc? Not to sound like a boomer, but in this day and age, what would happen to artists like Gaga, just to name one? Is there any place for very unapologetic uniqueness and flamboyance?
@handkerchiefdaniel
@handkerchiefdaniel 4 месяца назад
Pretty much what I'm about to start doing. Using most the exact techniques this dude says doesn't mean sacrificing originality. Just try to get into the algorithms of artists that sound as similar to you as possible. If it's really that obscure, don't back down. Stay authentic and scream from the rooftops until your audience finds you.
@JaySirius
@JaySirius 4 месяца назад
@@handkerchiefdaniel That's pretty good advice. I just think as a listener/audience I'm getting pretty tired about how blatant the algorithmic thing is starting to get when it comes to music marketing/artists personas and the likes. I fully get why artists do it, but it's getting quite stale imho. The whole "more of the same" philosophy makes a lot of us run in circles. I want something that breaks the mold, breaks the pattern, and wonder how that could be injected in the current model.
@Musformation
@Musformation 4 месяца назад
Honestly, I mostly work with a lot of original music but targeting the fans of artists who would like you is the key. No artist is a total island no matter how hard you try there’s a huge market for left field music of any type
@JaySirius
@JaySirius 4 месяца назад
@@Musformation you know way more about that than me so I trust you. I am just witnessing quite a bit of some kind of weird gatekeeping nowadays where people expect you to have a very stereotypical aesthetic, really show in not so subtle way that you belong to a certain scene, perhaps more so than in the past, which is paradoxical because I feel music has been moving more and more towards a very genreless or at least no-fixed-genre mentality. I will take your advice at heart and not get discouraged though thank you so much!
@Musformation
@Musformation 4 месяца назад
@JaySirius honestly I think there’s less gatekeeping than ever. As I have said often when you make something original it’s way harder to get it started but it was way more potential to be huge. The early work is going to be way more annoying but if it works it will have a way bigger pay off

Vis a Vis TikTok, am I to understand that the amount of views and interaction you receive on your *own* content is determined by what *other users'* content you comment on, hit like on and otherwise engage with? In other words, if you were to comment and like on other users’ retro-pop-type content often enough, your own content will get shown to more people who also like retro-pop, for example?

I dont agree entirely with this video. For example, being featured with other artist release is not the biggest marketing opportunity today AT ALL (it's the same principle as being featured on editorial playlist, in which the interest in you as an artist is just secondary). I agree with what Nic D and Connor Price say, that artists need to make engaging content on Tiktok today, and that's it. No more gatekeepers.
@Musformation
@Musformation 4 месяца назад
Fine to not agree I have data. What those fools say is very short term minded. The thing I see over and over and for much longer than those two have been at it is that those features pay off for a decade. TikTok is amazing and can really break you but it often doesn’t last. But have fun trusting those clowns.
