Teach Your Dog to STAND - Dog Training Video - Robert Cabral - the STAND Command

The stand command is perhaps the most difficult to teach your dog because it seems un-natural to both the dog and people. If your dog is STANDing, he should be doing something or going somewhere, right?
Well if you are interested in competitive obedience, your dog will need to learn to stand on command and STAY there.
I address this in this video. I break down how to shape and reinforce the technique and how to proof it. I've had many requests for this video, so here it is.
Remember, teaching anything new to your dog takes time. Be very patient with your dog and give him or her a chance to learn and make it fun. Short - fun sessions are the best way to train any dog.

It;s nice to see a training video with a dog that doesn't quite "get it" yet. I like watching a dog figure things out and we, as trainers, get to see how to help them get there.

"Stand" and "paw" are probably the most valuable commands when at the vet. Your groomers will be especially grateful.

Groomer? I tried to get one of those and got a text how no thanks. Bcos I thought ide be responsible and warn them first. He loves to bark doesn't like dogs much but he's a young dog he needs those experiences he'll learn. But the groomer was just like nah. Youd be best with a one to one they text. I wish I Just showed up with him now.

What I love about this video is - your demeanor - heavy use of positive reinforcement - your humility and confidence to demonstrate with a dog that is still learning and doesn’t yet have the commands down yet - the way you evolve/progress each command and add pauses: increasing the challenge for the dog.

Fantastic explanation on how to achieve this!! Thank you. Ive unwittingly been doing some of these techniques when trying to get my puppy to down from standing and she sits 😂😂 such as the gentle foot tap to say no stand back up i asked for a down not a sit. Your videos are always very informative. Im a member of a few dog groups on facebook and of there are ever any questions that come up i always point them your way. Thank you for your time and effort.

I really enjoy watching your video's. I would love to see your entire series of video's placed in sequence so it would be easier to learn them from the time you get your puppy transitioning to as they get older. Thanks for taking the time to make and post.

Hi Robert. I stumbled across this old video, which I first watched when I got my dog around 3 years ago. I used so many of your techniques and advice in my training. I really put it the time training my dog because he was and is high-drive and I came to understand through your and other RU-vid videos that dogs like that need to be occupied. You will not believe how well my dog is trained thanks to you and the information that you put out. I am so grateful to you for sharing your knowledge with us, and I hope you're doing very well and you and your dogs and happy and healthy. Take care!

This channel is a godsend! I have a GSD Collie cross (I know right) she's 6 and I'm beginning to see the shortcomings of my lax training. The more I listen to Robert the better I pick up on my dog having a lot of automatic,expected sequences for which I am responsible in the first place... She has developed a bad habit of mixing commands, again now I begging to understand that this is down to me sequencing things and just accept a half baked outcome which she's likely on all accounts done by memory rather than to my command. We have our work cut out for us true, thanks to thins channel however I feel I am better equipped to do things the correct way. Thank you! Love from the UK

I am really enjoying the videos I watched your first prior to going to the park today, just engaged her eyes to mine instead of looking at my hands for the treats she is now engaging more, I have worked on only this today, she seems happier and is coming back to me when off the lead at the park, she was a little but the distractions of other dogs seem to take over but today we had less incidents, I am looking forward to watching the rest

The foot technique is a good idea. I used treats to lure and then touched stomach with my hand. But that foot technique might be good for proofing stand. I want to to sit, stand & down from long distance in a field.

Thank you. Very helpful and informative. I will have a search through to see if you have a video on how to correct with the leash? Hopefully I haven’t picked this up wrong from the few videos I’ve watched. Thank you for the video! My adopted dog's "default setting" is sitting in front of me, so teaching the stand is super important, whether it's to clean her paws after a walk or getting the harness on. I couldn't figure out how I can teach the stand without her lunging forward for the treat, I'll try the leg block! Thank you!

Fantastic video Robert! This is exactly the issue that I’m having with my year old Old English Sheepdog. Thanks to you, I now know exactly what to do with the “stand” command. My only question is why do you throw the reward treats to the ground instead of rewarding the treats with your hand? I always reward sit, down, here, etc. with him taking the treats from my hand. Am I doing the rewarding incorrectly? Thanks for helping me train my dog. Of all the dog trainers on You Tube, and I’ve watched them all......you truly are the best!
@RobertCabralDogs
@RobertCabralDogs 5 лет назад
I like to vary where the dog will get rewards. If it’s always from the same place he will form that pattern. Plus teaching the dog to come forward creates a creeping motion. You want the dog to stay put especially in the stand where the dog is very likely to move.

Thanks for your videos Robert. My GSD is very responsive and well trained to my commands, (Sit, down, stand-up, heal, off, gentle, leave it, etc...). I would love to see a video that talks about how to teach the same commands in a different language, without confusing the dog. Do I need to start from scratch and go through the same process? I probably should have considered that when I started training him at 8 weeks. That being said, I am where I am. I know my GSD is well equipped to understand multiple commands for the same action,,,I just want to implement the best strategy for training him in multiple commands. Thanks again.
