It is so good to see a "real" horseman teach horsemanship. This man is a rare breed. A man who understands the right things without all the B.S. If you are smart, you will follow his advise.

You recommended a book by Sally Swift, Centered Riding a while back. I bought the book, read it and applied her techniques. It has really helped improve my riding. As my riding has gotten better, so did my horses. Thanks!

I had never seen a person do this until Pat did it with a well trained horse in one of his videos and never mentioned it. I was amazed. Being vertically challenged myself this would have come in handy in my riding days.

You are a class act Pat and one of a very few left. Growing up in northern Nevada and eastern Idaho, there were lots of folks like you. Times have changed, but it is good to know you are still out there. See to your weapons and stand to your horses.

I wanted you to know that although I don't have a horse and it may not be in my future, I really appreciate you and your lovely wife for the great videos. If the day comes that I'm able to work with horses, your videos are going to help me be prepared. Thank you, from "Dreaming of my Arizona retirement" 🌵☀️

I'm about Pats age. When I was a kid I was around a lot of Saddlebreds and Tennessee Walkers on the east coast. They were all 16 plus hands. There were no mounting blocks back then, All those horses were taught to stretch. Thanks for the reminder,

Nice clean presentation. Muchas. BTW, noticing your reins reminded me of mine, made by the late Jim Palm of Petaluma, CA in the mid-1980s. The reins are 8 1/2’ long x 5/8” wide, ~1/4” thick EXCEPT for ~ 1’ section 6” from the ends. Not doubled up leather, all taper. Gives nice weight, especially for a tap on the hind end with little wrist effort.

Pat - Bill from Bend Oregon. Love your videos and thank you for sharing your experience with us. I have a question about cowboy lead ropes. I have notices that cowboys don't leave a halter on their bridal horse when they ride, but they still have a rope that is somehow tied around the neck and then goes back to the saddle or the belt and sometimes goes through a nose band. What is the reason for removing the halter? What is the right way to tie the rope around the neck? Teach us the does and don't of this method please and the benefits. Thank you sir.

Same my horse was out of work for about 15 years how we have him and he rides so well but he doesn’t know how to be led very well ( he knows the basic walk but he walks up when I stop, disrespects my space, pulls of the halter if he doesn’t want to do something, etc.)

Hello amigo, my name is Gabriel I'm from Rio de Janeiro - Brazil. I really like your videos and I have managed to implement many of your techniques here on the farm. I have a big doubt and I would be very grateful if you could make a video teaching how you do it. How to teach the horse to stand alone holding the creature so that the vaquero can do what is necessary with the creature, as in the photo at the beginning of the video in which you appear with two horses doing this technique. Thank you very much for your attention.

Here are a couple videos that will help you get started. When first tying off on a horse with little experience, we have one of us stand alongside the horse and pet him and make sure he is holding the rope tight. After watching let us know your next questions: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PT62ATFf-Ac.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1D5EI1czEZ4.html

Hi Pat & Deb from sunny Spain. I had a mare from a Lusitano mother and PRE/ Friesian father, and I taught her to park out really well, but my PRE gelding is finding it difficult as he stretches very little, and tends to move his back feet forward if I ask him to stretch a little further, and sometimes right from the beginning. I am talking minimal stretch, only a smidgen more than a square halt. Is there any way to avoid/correct this. I do all my groundwork one or two repetitions only as he is a willing boy and I don't want to drill him and make him stale, so I know it's not that, but this seems more difficult for him. TIA

As soon as he moves hind foot, tap on the hind foot with a broomstick until he puts it back.

What's Pat's take on night latches
@PatnDebPuckett
@PatnDebPuckett 4 года назад
We have them on our saddles but if we need to hang on for some reason, we prefer to hold on to our lariats. A night latch is useful when putting the first ride on a colt because you have something to hold on to on both sides of your saddle...the night latch on the left and the lariat on the right.

@@PatnDebPuckett tell that gent to have a little more respect. he got no idea that a ten foot dozer blade of soil has been the only barrier between him and perdition on a hundred occasions and he dint even know it.tell him the line under the power towers is to catch falling wires that hit the ground-got nothin to do with the wind. can't stop the wind no matter what. it gonna do what it gonna do. an he specifically stated "cal fire". meanin' to be harsh only as a defense, and ain't no use spreadin' rumors that simply aint true.
@PatnDebPuckett
@PatnDebPuckett 4 года назад
You have no idea what is going on here. The power company, meaning SoCal Edison, sends two guys with one hoe between them to clear weeds in a 10 foot diameter under wood power POLES, not the big towers. They do this for liability. Rather than maintaining the power poles, they pay their stockholders. Then, at the height of summer, they cut the power off if it gets windy. Don’t mistake this for actual concern because there’s really no rhyme or reason to the power cut offs. One area will have higher winds and no power cut off while another area with calmer wind will be shut off. It’s more a show of force to let their customers know that if we want to sue them for negligence when towns burn down and people die as a result of their greed, that they can just take their marbles and go home. Anyway, then they send these Fire Dept helicopters to film the 10 foot “fire abatement” so they can say they did something to prevent a power outage. The problem we had that morning is they filmed that same line of poles around a dozen times. So stop complaining about something you don’t know about if you don’t live in this area. We absolutely support our wild land firefighters. But we do not condone the manipulation and greed by our power company.
