Teachable Moment - Runner's Interference Swipe and Umpire Timing 

Yah it’s totally different being in front of that play Vs us watching it from our computer/iPads

I always go down the line for a play at the plate but that far is nuts

Umpire was not in a good position. He should have been 'way left -- in the "wedge". He was straightlined and behind the catcher's back. He got lucky -- could have never seen the tag.

@@leocintron8110 hey Leo. Fellow umpire here. Evans class of 05’ great call and timing and patience. Question is was there any thought of ejecting the manager for being on the home plate dirt during the play or talking to him about that later etc? Best.

@@brady13001 No, even though the third base coach shouldn’t be there you could just warn him and tell him to make sure to stay within the vicinity of the coaches box. Just let the coach know. myself and my other two partners were not aware of this when the game started so we could not address it

The plate umpire was out of position. Maybe good call but wrong position! It was clear runner interference which he missed......

@@CloseCallSports it is a homerun. The offensive team gets to choose between the balk or the homerun.

@@user-nx8pe6pc3h Actually, I don't believe this is an option play. Unlike catcher's interference, I think the offensive team is forced to take the balk.

@@SomeSortOfLandCow I saw it happen it was called a balk by umpires. It went to protest and the protest was upheld. The offensive team get there choose.

@@user-nx8pe6pc3h Hm that's interesting. From reading the rule interpretations I was fairly positive that the balk is never an option play. Could you tell me exactly what the play was that was protested? I'm thinking that maybe the umpires incorrectly called time and enforced the balk too early in a situation where it should have been nullified, but that's just a guess.

I was curious as to why nothing was mentioned regarding other runners on this play. If runner sliding into home is out THEN knocks ball out as interference, isn;t an additional out supposed to be awarded?

I would hope somebody had a talk with him at some point!

I think the coach running backwards beat him to the plate.

There was no reason to eject the third base coach.

@@alanhess9306 taking a couple of steps outside the coaches box so the runner can see you is overlooked. Being all the way down the line to be in the dirt circle as the call is being made is egregious.

@@blakethornsbrough1528 Yes, quite confident. He's fine if he does not interfere with the play. The NCAA rule; Base Coach SECTION 3. A base coach is an eligible team member, head coach or assistant coach who occupies the coach’s box at first or third base to direct the batter or runner. b. At the time of the pitch, the base coach may not be closer to the foul line than the inside edge of the coaches’ box and no closer to home plate than the front edge of the box (see also Rule 2-6, Base Coach). A coach may leave the coach’s box to signal the player to slide or advance or return to a base as long as the individual does not interfere with the play. f. A base coach may not leave the box or act in a manner to draw a throw by a fielder or distract the pitcher, That is all the rule says about where the coach must be.

For what?

1:04 the runner has a clear path to the plate. Remember the runner establishes the base path, not the foul line. Not even remotely close to "blocking"...the Catcher's positioning is Textbook.

If the catcher is in possession of the ball he can basically do whatever he wants. The runner has the option to go back to the base he came, slide, or give himself up.. looking at this play the runner has enough space to slide to home that the catcher wasn't anywhere near so idk where you are getting that from.
