As always the media got it very wrong , the school board has no authority to level fines at all , you are very right . However the school boards do via contractual obligations and collective bargaining with the unions , to level sanctions against any unionized workers for cause . So if he signed with his union to up hold all the union rules and agreements , and he most certainly did as most unions that is one of the first things you sign , so if he signed on then he is most certainly subject as well as liable for the sanction . I know this is not the popular answer , but it is law . If you are interested in a union job , be careful of what they want you to sign , it does hold weight and is binding.

My wife was a school teacher and decided to home school when we had children because she didn't want to subject them to the public school system she had encountered teaching. For anyone thinking about homeschooling and scared to do it alone, check your local area for homeschool co-ops. Homeschool families get together and take turns teaching any specialties the families may have.

@Not Interested Teaching your own children is an absolute wonderful experience that allows you to really know your children. It gives us an opportunity to steer them in their growth, maturity and stages in their young life. We also can instill our values in them and nurture their minds while they grow. Theres no middle man (system) to pluck up the foundation we've laid with our children..so less battles. I have loved it so much and am still close with all 3 of my children, including my very productive, solid 26 year old. Wonderful path.

I am extremely fortunate to have been able to stay home and do this and not everyone is able to make it work. So I second your advice -- get on FB (unfortunately) and join local homeschooling groups and talk with some parents and see what's out there. Most families would be more than happy to help.

Also, look to the local homeschool groups on the local and state laws regarding homeschooling. My wife always runs into parents being told incorrect things by local school boards. In order to do it, you need competent, intelligent and dedicated teachers/parents, who would have to pass school NEA approved curriculum, set up by the schools, and be approved for advancing to the next grades or graduation. How many people, would qualify? How many parents, in the inner cities and poorer areas, would qualify for that? Or are you just talking about wealthy, stay at home mom's, who have nothing to do?

@@paulwolf7562 depends on the state. When I was fostering babies, I had a retired teacher teach my son math and science and I taught the other classes or hired or bartered them out. I am not wealthy in modern American terms, but I have done without many things to home educate. I've done babysitting co-ops, church schools, and bartering as well. There are ways. Not saying easy though. Parents teach their kids many things over the years. If they are not able to teach them they can at least have a say in what is taught them and how by getting involved with their school.

There was a contract and he was fined for breaking the contract, a contract which he signed when hired. No one withheld the money he earned. Now, I agree that the terms of the contract changed due to the school district making policies and the fine should have been waived.

It’s called you sign employment contracts upon hire and they enforced that clause of the agreement that penalized him for breaking the agreement. He doesn’t have to open an “academy” and group tutoring, Monday through Friday 8am to 3pm alternating the meeting place at a different kid in the group’s house every day. I have heard other parents hiring and doing the same thing.

If you can argue in court that a contract is one sided, then it becomes void and unenforceable. And there is a very reasonable argument to make that if one side can unilaterally alter the terms of the contract, with no input from the other, then any sort of early termination clause becomes void.

Now teacher assistants turn into substitute teachers. There's a hiring shortage because of the virus and because you make more working at a fast food restaurant than substitute teaching. The demands are way greater than the pay so I don't blame people for not wanting to work in a public school.

He had a contract and he breached his contract without legal cause , so they had every right to sanction him . I know this is not what anyone wants to hear but it is simply the law .

Everything I have seen was just teachers getting training in Deep Equity. Nothing about critical race theory (just more buzzwords and fear mongering) would be taught in the classroom. The public schools are un-reformable and failing nationwide, though at a different pace according to geographic location. But the trend is irreversible. Informed parents - those who are not brainwashed themselves - will continue to pull their kids out for homeschooling and private schools, and they should.

our homeschooled since last yr when four was beyond public first grade, now soon six is 3rd grade math, 5th grade reading and writing, and earth science around grade 6 o and also typing, and an ASL American Sign Language graduate! edit Left out, on avg 3 to 5 hrs a day of study/work. The kid loves to learn! and athletics also included after hours. Dance, rock climbing, yoga ... so much energy 😅 In addtn, she loves and studies Weather and Space Science, she was given a Celestron and loves seeing the planets "in my OWN scope ... wow!" Keeps journals with illustrations on her science findings. i better stop, now my comment is sounding like bragging 😅 but my point is... homeschool works!

There is very clear law about this situation , bottom line is he signed a contract with his union to up hold all union bi-laws as well as all union policies and agreements , the union had signed a contract with the school board that allows for sanctions against unionized workers for cause . He would be liable for the sanction no matter as he signed on with the union . He would have lost in court , then had a hefty court cost and fees to pay , it would have cost him likely three or four times the amount to fight and he would have lost . I know you are thinking there aught to be a law , well there is a law , unfortunately he is on the wrong side of it here . He still did the right thing even if it did cost other people their donations .
