If he is of age meaning he is 18 years in the US and 16 year in the UK they would not be a backlash but if he is underage then I guess they would be. To be fair they have been films where a 17 years old actor have been cast to be in a relationship with an older woman. I advise you to look at film "The Reader" with Kate Winslet who sleeps with a 15 years old boy in the 1940s. The boy playing him was 17 years old at the time and Kate Winslet was 34 or 35. In the UK anything over the age of 16 is not underage and our TV series, films, etc do contain 16 years old with older or younger people depending if the story calls for it but since it is not consider underage it not considered a big deal. In our soaps (we love our soaps not be confused with soap operas in America we have a soap called Emmerdale and it featured a student teacher relationship the boy or rather the actor who did the scene was 15 years old but the grooming or rather the character he played in the show is 14 years old, basically he was almost the same age as his character. There was a backlash, quite a huge backlash as it happens, it was in the papers, TV reviews, social media, etc some praising the story line for revealing these things however uncomfortable and other wanting it to end as quickly as it began, but the people in charge did not want to bring it to an end in just a few weeks because that not what happens in real life, so the story took about a year and half to reach its naturally conclusion where the teacher was eventually arrested. In the year half as the story unfolded you could see this female teacher grooming the boy, the looks in the classroom, the kisses, the manipulation, the after school tutorials, the body hugs, excluding him from his friends, getting jealous with girls who were the same age as him, everything you can expect from a female predator was played on the screen every week etc to moment she bedded him. The producer said they wanted authenticity that why they use a boy that age and he really looked that age if not younger because this thing really does happy and destroy these young men lives. Our soaps are differently from American soaps both in the way the story is told and the way it is delivered. If I can best describe it is almost like real life but it is not a narration nor is told from any point of view, there are no flash backs, characters thinking inside their heads but we can hear their very thoughts, visible day dreams that are imagined by the character but played out for the audience to see, characters talking to themselves unless their are talking to their phone and there no music in between scenes, just the opening and the ending when the credit rolls, just sometimes before the credit rolls and only in certain soaps there might be music a few minutes before the credit roll depending on the scene. It is also on five days a week, 30 minutes a day and hour on Christmas day, New year's eve and New year's day. A given story can take months to unfold and the conclusion can take a year if not longer sometimes less.
