The amount of data collection that teachers are required is overwhelming and has nothing to do with the education of students

I spent 30 years as teacher, associating pretty much only with teachers, married to a teacher. Then I retired. Began to find out how the other "half" live. Flee. Get out. Run. You'll have a life.

agree, im at the college level so its better from when i was k-12, but it still has its issues because a lot of my first year students are entitled, unmotivated, and tired

I'm sure you wouldn't trade your career for anything. Enjoy your comfortable retirement along with your husband teacher. But please don't dissuade would be teachers. Shouldn't they be able to live the same comfortable life as you did?

My dad left because of all the extra paperwork, not the teaching itself. He got a call last year asking him to come back because they were shortstaffed and he said ‘no way’.

Interesting that they want to fast track international teachers when all they have to do is listen to the ones already here.

Two people I know, who are teachers, told me they couldn't secure a permanent position in a few different schools they worked at. 🤷‍♀️

Yeah, no one can get permanent jobs because they only want to offer you temporary contracts. You'd think at a time when there's no teachers you'd want to lock them in, but no. Lack of job security in the profession is part of what's created this issue...

why oh why would anyone want to be a teacher in the present climate where teachers are not respected, over worked and under-paid. Valuing the profession and compensate them accordingly. No other profession has the 'extras' loaded onto their actual jobs and its a no-brainer that teachers are leaving and those with eyes who are thinking about studying to be a teacher are giving it a miss. I love hearing others say its such an important job but would suspect that these same people are not and would not stand for being compensated so badly.

The teaching profession needs to do what other other industries are doing and that is to automate the menial tasks. For teachers, that means marking reporting and data entry. Also to a lesser extent, it can mean the development of assessment. In Queensland, we write assessment and send it off to the department for approval. It gets flicked back to us for improvements and it can be an arduous process at times. Why can’t the department just send out pre approved assessment options for schools to choose from based on their context?

Notice how these problems of funding, increased work loads stagnant wages affecting not only education but other areas as well, add to this rising costs of services, eg., health, utilities, power, water, etc., etc., that once were publicly owned all these woes are directly proportional to the level of privatization, as billions of profit dollars are syphoned from the public purse. The GST, taxing money that has already being taxed, was a foreboding omen of what people are experiencing now.

A lot of public schools are so run-down, overcrowded, and outdated. The worst public schools, in the poorest conditions, are usually in predominately African-American neighborhoods. Even in middle-income black suburbs, where nicer homes are located, the public schools appear dilapidated. Existing school buildings are not being well maintained by U.S. counties and more new schools need to be constructed. What makes people think that a degreed person would accept and be comfortable working in places that are so poorly maintained?

Generations of Youth moving towards to an Uneducated population. Climate now that holds no interest in educating the youth, simple basic education is lost. Can't image the next few decades filled with youth, young adults who are completely ignorant, this is a crime against youth by not providing education as a basics written in the US Constitution. We'll all experience age groups later in their adult life who will not be employable nor competitive to other nations same age groups in jobs. This is not about any culture/racist fall, simply the US leaders have decided that educating the entire youth groups is not relevant-important in our society. Complete disaster decisions for our nation The USA.

You should be teaching at a private school. Don't waste your career teaching in public school. The salary benefits and pension package might not be quite as good, but you'll be able to go to sleep at night knowing that you're making a difference in the lives of children that want to learn, along with supportive administrators. Good luck.

After 2 years of remote learning, most of our students have large gaps in their knowledge. Despite this, the Education Department apply pressure to teaching the curriculum at their level. Many students need spend time catching up on what they've missed. The Curriculum needs to change to reflect this - take out the less important studies and double up on English and Math and other essential skills and knowledge.

Have you ever thought of just getting another job? Of course you may have to work 12 months a year as opposed to the 8 and 1/2 months you're currently working. You may even have to work the occasional Saturday or even a holiday or two. Look before you leap, you could be making a huge mistake. No job on Earth allows for more free time than a school teacher.

They still have not got the basics in place. In state education, you have the peculiar situation of contracted and permanent staff. Contracts are rarely full time and most contracted staff sit out the 'long' Christmas holidays wondering if there is going to be a job in the following year. Centrelink remain indifferent to the situation. Additionally, contracted staff are given the worst classes in the worst locations and if they refuse, they are identified and face future unemployment. Is there any wonder that they are leaving? People are not fools. Think carefully before embarking on this misadventure.

I was a high school teacher for 30 years to 2005. Stayed in it to try and make things better as many of my colleagues did. You're right, schools are largely holding bays for kids. Very little of value once you have the basic skills of reading writing and arithmetic. After that the internet is your oyster.

The answer to the teacher shortage is to hire teachers from India or China. They don't accept any nonsense and have large classes. They are bright, hard working people who would do the job for low wages. And during the holidays they would be happy to paint and decorate the school and look after the grounds. And they.could teach their own language too.
