All the kids at my school where Metallica shirts but when you ask them to name a song from the album on their shirt they cant even name one its literally embarrassing.
@@WastedTalent- or if you could only name one song by the band and it was the most mainstream one. I.E. I write sins not tragedies - panic lmfao. that was a constant one.
To add some context to this video, we have a talent show at Mortimer Jordan High School every year. I am the theatre teacher, and I run the talent show. I play guitar in this video. Every year, at the end of the show when the votes from the judges are being tallied, we get up and play two songs. The bassist/singer is the band director, and the drummer is my adult son (and MJHS graduate). We try to pick songs that are familiar to the students, but because I am an old school metal head, we pick heavy remakes of familiar songs, or in the case of Metallica, play it like it is. We don't really practice. We learn them on our own and get together the week before or week of the show and play through them about 3 times each, and then we come up with a fun scene to make the students laugh. It is simply for fun. The students at MJHS are the best fans one could ask for. I've never played in front of a better audience. As for the big question: Why did I play the Strat for the Metallica Song and the Kirk Hammett for the Miley Cyrus song? Simple. My main guitar is the Yngwie Strat, which I replaced the neck with a Warmoth 22 fret scalloped neck (and I like a reversed headstock), and it stays in standard tuning or half a step down. I keep the Kirk Hammett guitar tuned down to B or C, which is what the Miley Cyrus song called for (as covered by Life on Repeat), so I would have had to set them both up the opposite of what they already are, and that seemed foolish. The band director is multi talented, and though I used to play in bands, I only play once a year now at this event. My son has never been in a band, and he also only plays once a year with me for this. It is all in fun. I'm glad you all...err...most of you, enjoyed it. Oh, and I have OCD, so I wear black and khaki everywhere all the time. I don't own other clothes. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the details. You guys are really tight, considering you're a group that literally does this once a year! Damn. Mad chops on the strings. Singer really tears it up with the vocals.
So much love for this - keep playing & inspiring everyone who watches and listens to you - you deserve all the love, respect & attention that this performance no doubt gifted you all. Respect from Brighton, UK 🙌🏻
Mr. Turner, I suspect that I am your age (64 . . . .ish) granted, you look much younger, but I just wanted to say that having been to a lot of concerts (a long time ago) and grown up on probably the same stuff you like, you and your partner KILLED IT !! And because I'm ADHD and not much inclined to use a filter when commenting, I would like to say that "they killed it" and you OWNED IT ! That was seriously good. * Totally awesome that your son plays with you......he dropped the hammer too ! All the best - Lee
@@danskrolla Thanks! The calling out the kids is of course all in fun, and they expect it. Whenver a student comes near me in the halls with a band shirt (usually Nirvana, Metallica, Smashing Pumpkins, Guns N' Roses, Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, Sublime), I say, "Can you name two songs by that band?" It's all in jest.
Kids dont do drugs do guitar, ive played guitar for 35 years and these teachers knocked it out of the park. Guitar and bass. Just remember a band is not a band with out the root of a bass player.
It's great to see a few teachers who aren't unhappy bores that spend all their time yelling at children while failing to even do a mediocre job at their work.
@@adam.musmar I mean dude is so basic you should be able to remember his name right? He's the John or Mike of drums. Super simple, and very common. People act like Lars created the 4/4 kick snare beat. Dude is literally the worst famous drummer imaginable. Ringo Starr is leagues above him and people of his time shat on him. Lars will forever be a clown though because even though he is a shit drummer, he's also a major douche bag. He deserves the hate he gets. Anyone who thinks he's a good drummer, or 'influential' even though they know nothing of drums, is insane for so many reasons. He didn't move the needle in any fashion. (BTW not saying this is what you said but am just airing my grievances.)
He’s been playing gigs for years. He does jazz and did full eligibility with Carolina crown dci so he knows about showbizz. Our teachers are so cool lol
By the way they play I get the very distinct feeling each of these dudes mastered Metallicas greatest hits on their own before any of them ever met. And then one day in class one of them randomly asked the other if he knew Enter Sandman and it was over from there 😂
So exciting for the students that don't know that their teachers can rock. I clearly remember being blown away by an 11th grade teacher back in 1976. A classmate had brought a 12 string acoustic guitar to school with him and the teacher asked if he could play it. He sat on his desk in front of the class and just tore it up.
a school where the teachers are cool and can do stuff like this. and also where the students aren't too "embarrassed" to sing along and actually participate. awesome
I had a history teacher that would bring his acoustic guitar and sing songs and teach about history. By far, my favorite teacher. Mr Walters, if you see this you are the best 8th grade history teachers! I hated history but you made it great!
I'm ancient, past retirement age.. This showed up in my feed, and for whatever reason this made me incredibly happy, awesome, what great teachers to have
In 1985 my teachers did the same thing, but with ACDC... and SOMEHOW they shoe-horned in a trumpet solo.... but the drums were so powerful they made a couple of girls cry (they only about 10 at the time, and sitting right next to said drum kit).... Still, it's great to see your teachers letting rip and having fun once in a while...
This is great for them and the kids. I had a teacher my senior year that I used to see him and his brothers at the local bars playing for decades after I got out of high school.
This was great of the school faculty to even allow with the odd environment we’re in these days where so much is forbidden in schools. Really cool to see teachers having fun. Our educators deserve it!!
🤘😎🤘 so awesome and you know this was an encouragement to the kids, this is teaching 👏(they definitely made an impact and connection with their students)
The best part of this performance is its just simple giitar, pedal and amp tone. Everything on the Internet now is so professionally mixed ,it takes the raw element of music. Love it
He said they really only play once a year at this talent show at the end Being a teacher probably takes up most of their time. You guys are too good to only play once a year I’m glad you put yourself out there so the kids can see we are all more than our jobs
Those teacher's and student should have became the most popular people in the building. It's amazing seeing the teachers lead by example. They teach you to play but yet they can also back it up themselves.
As a kid I was kicked out of school for drug use. I’m a guitar player nowadays an don’t use hard drugs. This was really really nice to see and most likely really inspired some kids there.
as a teacher, this totally makes sense. Experienced teachers up front, but they rope the first year teacher into killing it on the drums. True mentorship. Everything right about the profession is right on that stage.
I went to the high school in the 90s. My teachers, led by the music teacher who was a really cool dude and a great sax player, played Money by Pink Floyd. It was perfect and amazing.
