one teacher I have, I hate his ass, but he told us once "Do you realize that what you think you're learning in school might not be what you're actually learning?" and I think about that a lot

ok the smile one gives me pause, like it's a sweet sentiment really but I can see it going bad soo easy and lead to them adopting unhealthy emotional and mental habits in order to smile and "fake it till you make it"
@wintershock
@wintershock 9 месяцев назад
Yeah, same here. I tried that habit and it definitely worsened my situation. Five years of suffering cannot be fixed by forcing a smile like a bad hour or bad day can. In that case, faking it just makes it worse as you are outright ignoring the problem.

I know that health teacher meant well. But forcing myself to smile if I'm not in a good mood just puts me in an even worse one. Like, it is physically uncomfortable for me to smile unless I'm genuinely happy. Maybe it's because I'm on the autism spectrum.

The part about the teacher knowing the students' struggles was a gut punch to me. I wish all teachers were like that. It made me think about the rough couple of years our family struggled and affected me and my schoolwork as a kid. Did my teachers know? Or was I just a trouble to them?
@aymericdeascalon4590

When I went to university to become a teacher, at least once a week we would hear it repeated "male teachers; never be alone with a student" , and constant warnings about physical contact. When a student is upset, crying, we have the same instincts to offer comfort as any female teacher. Having to just stand back and watch a student suffering sucks. Even more, knowing that the best thing for someone in emotional distress is often basic human contact. A hug, an arm around shoulders. Not being able to offer comfort because of a mixture of a few perverts, and exaggerated social perception... And it's only enhanced when a female teacher comes along and does exactly those things without a second thought.

Im a “gifted” student in middle school and my teacher convinced me to take the algebra classes to get an extra credit for high school, and I’m glad he did that because I hit the great filter for gifted kids, high school level classes, a year before I actually start high school, and honestly I think it saved me from becoming a burnt out gifted kid.., but now I get no rest at home, still, I’m trying.

last story: what happens in band stays in band. i have heard stories from friends in other schools of kids who do it on the band bus, and a couple of our members did it at a hotel together at an overnight competition

For the smiling thing I can see how it can help for some but it’s not the most helpful thing in the world. I know in my case it worsened things and that’s because it was like putting a bandaid on a gaping wound. Some problems are too big to be fixed with a simple smile and that’s okay. You just need to realize that and figure out the best way to navigate the situation. Sometimes it requires you to reach out for help, other times all that’s needed is a small change.

Hearing that one teacher talk about having to fail students even if they liked them hit hard. Im pretty bad in german, despite it being my native language i was actually very close to failing it this year, but my german teacher and i are actually pretty good and im not that terrible during class either, but those fucking exams take me out every time, no matter what i will absolutely flunk them and not get anything higher than a 3- (or C- for Americans) for one i learned so much but still got a 4 (D) and it honestly just… sucks. I hate that im so bad no matter what i do, i hate that my parents aren’t even that disappointed anymore, they still are of course but its just nothing new for me to get grades like that in German.

The smiling story is very sweet but I can also see it being harmful to autistic kids already masking to their utmost to minimize the abuse from the peers as much as they can. I know that sort of thing hurt me in ways that still impact me over a decade out of school. I think that would have broken me every single day, because the idea of trying to force a smile would have been such a slap in the face I would have cried. I was doing my utmost every day to not give in to certain ideations regarding my own life and not wanting it to continue. I had a teacher that forced eye contact for entry and it broke me so bad I self harmed the worst I ever had the day he started doing that and to this day I can’t make eye contact without having a severe panic attack. Before that, I was somewhat capable of eye contact if only once in a blue moon and under the exact right conditions. Now I just can’t. These well intentioned things can be a toxin that never leaves ND kids.

The 'smile' one at 09:32 is just awful advice. Any kid going through massive tragedy should not be expected to smile every day. My father died of cancer at home when I was a teen- I saw him become a drugged, delirious, barely alive corpse bloated with tumours, connected to a drip that drained his stomach to stop him throwing up the contents of his obstructed, cancer riddled bowels. The last time I saw him alive, he was scared of me and didn't know who I was. I saw the dead body of my father at the age most kids are thinking about applying to college. I was told/forced to smile more by school. It. Fucked. Me. Up. Teachers, don't force sad kids to be happy, it's horribly damaging. Kids have tragedies in their lives too! I ended up with PTSD, anxiety and depression because I wasn't allowed to be miserable and process what I had been through. (I had years of therapy and prescription anti depressants and I am doing much better now. Ironically, I ended up becoming a teacher. I practice what I preach.)

I try to be aware of what is happening in my classroom. Part of that is to watch for bullying, who's doing it and who it's happening to. I have a particular hatred for bullying so it is something I pay attention to. Unfortunately in a class of 28 kids, all demanding attention, sometimes you miss things. Especially when bullies tend to be careful about being caught, and the retaliation tends to be when the victim snaps and is not subtle. I do believe in a right to self defence and if I know that is the reason for something, I may ignore a small response. If I have to pass something higher, I will usually privately speak to the person I pass it to, to let them know what is happening. Again unfortunately most schools have policies on violence that doesn't give much room for discretion. If I do catch a bully in the act, they are very quickly, very aware of my displeasure.

Cheat. Cheating is for games, life is not a game. You'll already be up against conglomerates that cheat daily and work on the edge of the law. What you think is cheating, is playing life to the same rules as the rest of the world. So don't think there's a magic score board keeping track, because there isn't. Use a calculator, use the internet and be resourceful. Cheat doesn't mean lie, it means making your life easier. So don't impose made up rules that only you have to follow.

I'm 50\50 on the smile one at work it's maddening to fake positive emotions when I know I barely genuinely feel like that and am constantly anxious and irritated about something, either at home or at that workplace maybe it's just me, but even when I was that young being forced to smile when I sometimes didn't feel like it and wasn't able... I would have given that poor teacher grief too. I have and have had for a very long time something akin to resting bitch face but less idk hostile? and I have a dry sarcastic sassy sense of humor and somewhat flat or inappropriate affect in general but even worse when I'm masking. I would have eventually ended up either getting anxious or irritated and either egging on "fine find me a reason to smile then" or just skipping the class constantly and letting myself fail even back then. I've always been the type to butt my head against a brick wall but there's only so much brain damage you can do to yourself doing that before it isn't worth even trying to fight the losing battle. Idk not even to be rebellious but I think back then and even now being able to think things over in a broader light I would have had a really hard time with being told "fake it till you make it" with not being in a shitty mood because that was one way my family always tried to gaslight me out of worrying about things that were bothering me instead of actually addressing them I think that rule would have grated on me in an irrational way even back then when I wouldn't have understood why.

Also to assure that male teacher a bit my parents lived on the oposite end of that fear (I'm 26 now and trans but still not able to go on T because of my life and home situation) when I was like 10 I was attached to a teacher of mine I considered like a friend he knew how to be strict in ways that helped us but he also made class genuinely fun and interesting and was able to get me who chronically daydreamed fiction throughout all of my school years to pay some attention and actually helped me I gave him a hug it made him similarly uncomfortable and my family actually had to explain it to me. Some parents understand and most kids don't or at least didn't back then, that sometimes it means nothing but a kind gesture. I just wanted him to know I appreciated him and that he was sort of like having a substitute dad during the week days when my dad wasn't around. I had another teacher in highschool old enough to be my parent I had a similar and probably even more friendship\family type relationship with since I was way older but my family kinda dumped me off on him when it came to practices and sports events a lot of the time so they were only there for those sorts of things sometimes. He was technically always there though, since he was literally my coach. Sometimes what looks "wierd" is pretty innocent I just had family that was a little too busy for me at times but my teachers weren't. My family even baked pies for that second teacher because he had to be my ride home so often that I felt burdensome and wanted to do something nice for him myself it can be totally innocent and even from the teacging end. After I realized I was trans I had been substituting for a few years and even though I didn't pass I still felt like that line was wierd and I should watch myself but again much like those teachers me being nice to any of the students was just my way of being like "hey I'm new at this and I am literally probably even more shy and awkward than some of you may be feeling but if you need some reassurance or guidance I'm here to help, even as the blind leading the blind. I didn't last long cause I started during covid and the chaos structure gave me such bad anxiety I just got a new different full time. But I can sympathize and say often more than not a lot of people are more innocent than the vibe they give off, not everyone but still.

If your worried that we have any negative feelings toward you, unless you're being an absolute asshole about it, the majority of us don't. We're constrained by the same system you are, and we hate it too. The teachers that have the time to notice you, and it's probably a good deal more than you expect, are probably said that we like the time or tools to reach out to you more directly. There are teachers who think there class is the be all end that probably don't like you, but they suck at their job and aren't worth the energy you would spend thinking about them. As far as the "Life you actually want," I'll give you the same advice that I give my students. You should exit high school with some idea of what you want to do afterwards, and some plan for how you can get there. The absolute freedom you have once you graduate high school and are on your own for the first time is really intoxicating for awhile, but by the time you hit 25 if you're still working retail and living in a one bedroom apartment, it's really going to start to suck. If you have any dreams try talking to which ever teacher you have that teaches what ever class is closest to that field. For medicine talk to a science teacher, for music talk to the bad director, things like that, and they can probably help you develop the structure for some kind of plan. Don't talk to your Guidance Counselor they're pressured to exclusively try to push you into a four year university, and that sucks for most students. That being said it's way easier to get a decent job if you have some amount of post high school education, but that can be a trade school, vocational school, a two year college, or an apprenticeship.

The most important thing you’re going to learn is how to learn. THIS IS SO TRUE. I’ve been in some incredibly intensive uni classes and high level math and science. My highschool teachers taught me how to study and how to get stuff done. That was infinitely more valuable than anything I’d ever learned before, and very few classmates had those skills. Please. Learn how to learn. Figure out how you learn best, if you’re auditory and need to invest in a text to speech program, or if doodling while listening to lectures helps, or flash cards, just do whatever it takes. It will make life a heckton easier for the rest of your life.

When I was a student teacher, I was giving all the kids fist bumps at the beginning of the day. When I left, I had two kids give me notes from a classroom I didn't even work with, that they helped me get through their days because I started their days with a smile. I feel ya kids. I so wanted to say that during that time, I went through a severe depression, not related to the profession. But because I had my own crap I was dealing with. Now, as an EA, it is far easier. I am far more laidback, and between my babyface, youthful energy and autistic demeanor, parents don't take any offence at kids being casual with me. The kids are perfectly okay with hugging me, and the parents are "Oh that's him. He's fine and harmless. Look at how he's making that troubled kid smile from the heart." Oh, and most teacher predators are actually women than men. It's just that it's easier for a woman to get away with it than a man.

I went to school to be a teacher but ended up a soccer coach, which gives me a rare opportunity to work with the same group for the past 10 years. This gives me the rapport I need to make fun of them when they're too full of themselves, and all that kind of thing you can't get away with as a classroom teacher. And the moment another player tries to jump in and add to my mockery, I just turn on that one instead. They all need to stay humble, and I try to model it with a balance of jokes about me, jokes about them, and jokes comparing them. I had one player with good footskills try to make fun of another for not being fast, so I reminded him that the second player runs cross country and can run a sub 6 minute mile, while the one mocking him absolutely cannot. He pivoted real quick to bogus about "well that's in cross country, long distance is different" which is true, except he gets beat in sprints too. He got quieter at the offer to host a head to head race.
