At my school, middle-school starts at 6th grade and ends at 8th grade. Quite a few changes happen in that time. In this video, let's explore what it's like teaching 6th graders vs. 8th graders.

Love this... I teach 4th-8th grade strings, and I noticed I have to have separate lessons for 6th, 7th, 8th. Totally true how different they are!

In my first year teaching 8th after 3 years of 6th and this is all so spot on. It's more of an adjustment than I thought it would be but it's a positive one for my style for sure.

Hey Thom, hilarious intro. With the youthful video style you have there if you shifted your audience to your students I think your channel will blow us. Fantastic videos. You got me watching and laughing.

Thanks Paddy! Yeah I think a lot more of my students tuned into this one than some of my other videos, but I feel my strengths lie a lot more in supporting other teachers in their work than it does entertaining middle-schoolers on RU-vid! Haha. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

Since COVID-19 hit, I haven't been able to go to school and have been taking online school for a while. My first year of in-seat middle school will weirdly be my last (while all my friends at school have been taking in-seat for a while), so this was very fun to watch!! Thank you for this great video

Hi! Thom. I teach to middle school students as well. I think you are definitely right about 6th graders. The enthusiasm most of them share as a character trait at that age. I think even 7th graders are different than 6th graders in many ways. I see 5th and 6th more closely tied to each other as a group and 7th and 8th graders are more alike in some sense. I really get benefit of your experience and thoughts to become a better teacher as a newly graduate EFL teacher who wants to do his best. You look like a great teacher. Keep up the good work. 😎

I agree; 5th and 6th seem closer together and 7th and 8th as well.

6th graders are like what happens when you mix child qualities with teen qualities. Child qualities, Energetic, Immature, Curious, Teen qualities, Rebellious, Socially-aware, Moody. Alot of boys and girls start puberty around 7th-5th grade which can be hard for them because their brains aren't as developed as a 10th-12th grader to deal with all the hormones an new feelings. Middle school was a really hard time for me socially and emotionally I started noticing changes from puberty when I was 10 and when I turned like 11 and a half that's when puberty really struck me and it was so weird because most kids my age still hadn't reached the stage I was in so I felt very alone. Btw just a reminder 6th grade 11-12 7th grade 12-13 8th grade 13-14

Love everything you talked about. I have bounced from 6th thru 8th (Math) and trying to go back to 6 for a “break”. I know it’s just a break from the sassiness and eye rolls of 8th graders, but I’ve kind of lost my own enthusiasm being in one grade for too long.

As a middle school 6th-8th grade science teacher I can not agree more with your tips. I started as a sub and once you gain respect from your students and build meaningful relationships with your students the classroom management falls into place. Some days they are far more squirrely than others and with a little humor you can turn any situation into a teachable moment.

I taught both grades. Loved both for different reasons. I see 6th graders as puppies. They are so excitable. They want to love you. The 8th graders are too cool for school, but underneath they still WANT to be kids who are just loved. They can start to have nostalgic feelings. I love teasing them.

Is it true that in your society middle school students learn using the PC and the internet? In the corner of the world where I am, all electronic devices are seen as demons for kids. And whenever the kids have PC or phones, they use it for games and game videos and totally lose control over themselves. As a result, our education remains in the "stone age", while children in other places are using modern technology to learn. One example is the dictionary. While the dictionary website is so powerful and convenient, our students are limited to the paper ones, because once they get online, they do everything but study.
