@@michaelcarlisle7713 Making an angle grinder fly is not a worthy creation from a college degree, it's something an inbreed hic creates in his living-room-garage provided it doesn't kill him first. Now, the multiple unmanned and manned planes Peter created, that... THAT is what I'd expect from a college graduate. Though to be fair, read this i just posted: "Ya know... one can only upload SO many practical and safe videos SO many times before people say, "this was already done on a dozen other channels", leading one to the conclusion, "one has to create NEW and UNSEEN footage to bring in NEW subs and not lose old subs". Enter the age where Natural Selection no longer exists and millions of otherwise stupid people (dude at 0:44) clamor to subscribe to NEW and UNSEEN content, intelligent and sensible people would not watch." I feel sad for future generations including todays younger generation, they get NO ne content, just content they THINK is new till they discover the old song, movie, or physical device it is based on. =( of course, as you already know, I am just one of millions of you tube commenters who's comments don't matter =P Edit: Just checked out the end of the video... ok ok it actually worked and IS pretty cool. The fun thing with the BV141 is the tail design wasn't because of the asymmetry - it was for the tail gunner! They wanted them to be able to not have to worry about the stabilizer being in the way. It was mocked for its design so never saw production beyond the first prototypes, but filled the role of a single engine scout/bomber that it was designed for pretty damn well in initial testing.

You probably already noticed this but each time you push the copter wings with the launch pole, you’re inverting the angle of the blades turning all that wanted upward thrust into downward thrust, or no thrust just gravity, but it is a great idea and I think Peter can get it to work, little bit lighter blades with a better angle and “out of box” design,

@darrenfalconer3267

I don't think they would be inverted, looks more like they are just flexing down. Pushing it up doesn't invert the pitch of the blades. And that's even less likely to happen since he added the small wing. This just looked like it didn't produce enough lift.

Hey Peter - project idea! What if you made a plane without ailerons, and instead had the main wing on a rail that moved the wing left/right to tilt the plane one way or the other, due to the imbalance of lift on either side? To explain it another way: The wing (when moving on the rail in one direction) would be getting longer on one side while getting shorter on the other due to the linear motion on the rail, 90° from the direction of flight.

I’m impressed with his ability to pilot all this crazy stuff. If you have ever flown an RC plane without gyros and modern stability systems, it ain’t easy on well designed models.This dude? Asymmetrical designs, crazy CGs, ridiculous drag coefficients, violent cg shifts, oscillations , piss poor control surface authority, flexible fuselages, twisting, warping. No problem! It’s impressive the crap he can actually keep in control.

A die grinder or router would be pretty awesome. Similar to an angle grinder except the tool points straight ahead instead of 90 degrees to the side, and they can be very high RPM, up to 30,000RPM. I want to see some exploding propellers.
@EmyrDerfel

Or just unbolt the gearbox off the grinder, that's making a lot of the noise, and the gearbox mountpoints would be useful for attaching the grinder to the craft.

Great video! What, if any, impact did the offset right angle orientation of the grinder have on the planes handling as you were throttling up and down? Did the propeller temper/buffer any of this effect? I ask, as I know from experience that the angle grinder can try to spin out of your hand about the rotating head if you run it instantly at full power. This is best experienced by holding the tool straight out to your side at arms length like you were holding a torch, and the rotating disk/propeller facing away from you, as if the grinder was one of those WWII flashlights and you were shining it to your right with your hand extend all the way out. Quickly throttle the grinder up and then off and you should feel a strong twisting motion at your wrist. This is the 'axial' motion that is opposing the disk/propeller's movement and with the added weight of the battery, could cause, as you mentioned at one point with the helicopter, the center of balance and center of gravity of the plane to shift as this rotational force of the spinning propeller increases and descreases thus changing the forces applied against the control surfaces. With the grinder "engine" of the plane offset, I was wondering if the plane would tend to try to bank left or right as you throttled up quickly or throttled down quickly.

You could try separating the battery from the tool, and run some wire between them to space out those two heavy parts. That might help adjust the CG to be more balanced.

Yes a dremel tool seem a much better geometry for a plane, but the very low torque high rev motor still should represent a exiting challenge.

For a single blade helicopter, you need propulsion at each tips of the blade, pointing in opposite direction (to get a clockwise or anti-clockwise movement) ... like they do in China with fireworks flying wheels. The centripetal force helping, it'll stabilize the wing.... but all the weight being at the tips, it'll also increase the possibility that it tears apart.
@leftaroundabout
@leftaroundabout Год назад
Actually it should be ok with propulsion on only one tip. However you do need a counterweight, so that the center of mass is reasonably far away from the prop so that it can create good torque. The designs in this video didn't have that. Best is of course to use the battery as the counterweight.

@@leftaroundabout Charybdis, McCutcheon's machine, Flying Maple seed. Plenty of examples on youtube of them. Might not be strong enough structurally but looked like his center of rotation was too far off from his center of balance. For the two bladed one I would go with a smaller prop delivering higher speed but less static thrust. I think he got all of the thrust out of the big prop he could but it just wasn't high speed enough especially so close to the center of rotation where plenty of thrust is going in the wrong direction just because Angular moments are wrong. I ran a Monocopter challenge on RCOnline back in 2007, it was fun and I flew them all the time with little cox engines or a Norvel 15 powered one with a wing made of 2 mill coroplast SPAD style. My biggest was the wing from my first Ugly Stick when the fuse wore out. Ran a throttled os 40fp for power. On a still day I could throttle up, take it high, throttle down and let it come back and change altitude. It was a flying oddity. When I started flying Norvels for 1/2A I no longer needed the 25% fuel for the Cox engines, And I put the things up for memories sake. @@williamcrane8236 Still easier to use two identical engines/ propulsion system at each tip (rockets, jet or propeller engines, compressed air nozzles etc.) .... allowing more power, redundancy, perfect counterweight and no need for a tail rotor. Good examples: every tip jet helicopters: Saunders helicogyre, the WNF342 V4, the McDonnell XV-1 and my favorite, the Fairey rotodynes.

How long of a flight time was you getting out of that angle grinder plane approximately and for the helicopter one you made I think you have to put the motor out on the end of the wing not in the center for it to get enough speed to work
