Is teaching English in Japan really a good idea? Well I did it so you don't have to. I'll tell you the good and the bad about it all from my point of view.
I taught English at Eikawas in Tokyo at three different schools and boy do I have tea to tell you. Honestly there are some good points, but we can't ignore the glaring bad points.
After watching, let me know, were you surprised? Did I encourage you to take the leap and do it yourself? Or have I put you off for good?

Hope to see you guys in the next video.
X Steph
Thanks to ‪@JoshTaylorJP‬ for the portrait photo from a million years ago that I used for the thumbnail.
Thanks to ‪@patkay‬ for letting me borrow his ridiculously nice studio.

Yeah I agree that Teaching isn't for everyone. I have been doing it here in Korea for ten years now and have seen sooo many teachers come and go. The turnover rate is incredible. I do however enjoy the interaction with the students I teach. Japan was my first choice but decided to come here. Wouldn't mind giving it a try there one day. Thanks for the tips.

Great video, a lot resonated with me as well. Pay is a problem, yes. I worked at a eikaiwa called peppy Kids club back in 2005. The work life balance there was great. 4 out of the 5 days were night classes which gave me lots of time during the day. The Saturday classes would be all about 9 hours. Then Sunday and Mondays were days off. Sometimes when another teacher is on leave in another prefecture, they'll ask you to go there and teach, which was a great way to explore another city. Cash in the shinkansen ticket they gave you and then catch an overnight bus and you have a little more money. 😂

Stoked to hear you enjoyed the video! I never got the chance to teach in another prefecture but I can imagine that being super fun! Even working in different areas of Tokyo I met so many different kinds of people.

amazing video ! i think a lot of people put on rose colored glasses when it come to Japan, myself included I always thought it would be nice to live and work in Japan but then I realized my friends who live in my city that are from Japan left because they didn't like the working culture. I love Japan don't get me wrong and I would love to live there but I think only if I had my own business or could make my own hours 😅 I actually did teach English in a foreign country before and I feel very similar towards it as you do, and that was in China, don't get me wrong I enjoyed my time there and the friends I made, but very long hours and not a lot of pay to reflect that and also very very restricting on what you can and cannot do!

The salaries for teaching in Japan are just too low for the cost of living. A few years ago I worked in Vietnam. I was making over $3000 a month and my cost of living was less than half of what is was in Japan. Which means I was able to have a great time and managed to do alot of traveling and my general quality of life was better. I could not afford to do this in Japan. Every month I was in survival mode to try and afford the next month. Japan is a great place to visit but like most developed countries one has to yearn alot to really enjoy it.

Really enjoyed hearing your experiences and stories! Thanks for providing us with some insight on how these things are, especially for those who are interested in moving to japan to find work! Just curious, will you do a video talking about transitioning from this teaching job, to becoming a full time content creator in japan? Like what was the process like and the troubles you faced? Would be cool and informative to hear your stories and it can definetely help those who would like to follow your footsteps as well!

I never taught English in Japan (i think i was too old by the time i moved to Japan) but was transferred to Japan for work. Interestingly enough, as of January/February you can live in Japan for 6 months and work remotely if your job supports it. One of my colleagues is doing that at the moment, then he's going to south korea and then come back for a 1 month vacation before returning to Oz. It's cheaper living here than in Sydney. But you need to earn more than 105k AUD a year to qualify for the visa but you can see a lot more of the country this way.

I heard about this way! Seems hard for most people to qualify but glad there are more options still!

Not that i consider doing anything alike, but it's really great to see some insights. Especially the 5 days vacation shocked me. And i complain about my 25 days 😅 (even tho some have ppl have 30+ 😐) I'm even more happy for you now, taking this step to be more independent and doing well with it. I'd love to know more about how you make a living right now, but i'd understand that you'd rather not share that with everyone 😅 On another note, i haven't seen any lives on Instagram from you for ages, are you planning to do them again? (Fun fact: If you don't know I'm "Heinz Moni" [not real name ofc] over there 😁✌️)

RU-vid keeps recommending your channel ! I can't escape LOL. Eikaiwa has a lot of variability in terms of pay, working conditions, lesson plans etc. But generally it is bad. Also most managers are mindless sycophants which makes things worse. It seems that often students and teachers don't get the best deal. Do some Eikaiwa still have rules against socializing with students ? A lot of people don't really consider the flow on effects, maybe they teach in Japan for a few years then return to Australia for example. Now they don't have much money and they have to try and find a regular job - could be a big problem because Eikaiwa experience doesn't count for much. People need to do their research, I think some weeaboos / Otakus are so caught up in the dream they don't consider the reality. Stefatty seems naturally cheerful so I'm sure her students were happy.

Enjoyed the video. Just wondering if you are self-sponsering for your visa or do you still have to be sponsored by a Japanese company to maintain your visa? Any advice on how to transition from teaching to being a full time content creator would be great.

I'm trying to find another way, I know teaching isn't for me. There's now a degree called the Digital Nomad that Japan offers, but you have to meet a certain monetary threshold.. but it might offer more freedom You basically sponsor your own visa if you can prove your income. But I'm not there just yet...

Very insightful. Unfortunately, I never went to Uni in Aus, is there a way to get a working visa without holding a bachelor's degree?

There are but since I haven't done it before, I don't much experience in it. I know a business manager visa doesn't require one though!

Are you eligible for a working holiday visa ? If so some English schools will hire you on part-time contracts (such as Nova). However you can take many jobs on that visa, so brush up your Japanese. You might be better to consider other roles.

Lots of teachers do take on private students, but hello burnout. I can't imagine teaching all day then taking on private students. It is possible to start your own business and self-sponsor some sort of work visa, but it isn't for the faint of heart and needs lots of evidence.

Is this the young woman from Japan By Food channel? 🤔 Not to get political but in general, Japan does not like like or want too many "gaijin" in their country. I respect that. They aren't "globalists". 👍

I think teaching could be fun but I will not get a bachelors degree to risk having a bad life.
