It's borrowed from the drag-ball culture of the 1980s and 90s, which was black/latino and urban and ultimately tragic (see: the 1990 documentary, "Paris is Burning" - it's truly eye-opening) It makes me uncomfortable to see white boys from Texas explaining words they learned from the internet and RuPaul and the internet, largely out of context.
