My youngest son is at the age where he thinks training Malinois and Dutch Shepherds for protection dog, guard dog, and police work, seems a lot more exciting than our normal Labrador Retriever puppy and general dog training routine.
For the next few months, I'm going to spend some time teaching him the ins and outs of training German Shepherds, Malinois, Dutch Shepherds, and other types of working dogs.
Once he gets the the basics down pat, I'm going to let him go hang out with some fellas that specialize in this type of work so he can refine his working dog training techniques.
I hope you guys enjoy!

Georgie is more of a man than the criminals who get bit by these dogs at work. He took that bite in stride and kept on training with calm assertive composure. What a pro. Great job everyone.

This father and son team is amazing. First of all, the son is extremely mature for being 14 years old and to be able to patiently listening to any kind of constructive criticism that his father throws at him like a champ. His father is also very fair to his son in applauding him by highlighting what he has done well. I'm so impressed by this father-son duo who is working hard to pass on the father's knowledge of being a master dog handler to his youngest son. What a wonderful family you have. :-)

My Malinois was impulsive until I tough her to focus on balancing a stick on her nose. First for a couple seconds then worked up to over a minute sitting with a stick on her nose without movement. This exercise taught her to focus her energy with self control and what could be misunderstood as patience. Anyway she is now totally on target and attentive.

I’m so impressed with George’s progress and patience with the dogs and with Stonnie and the stressful situation of not only learning to run the family business and expand and evolve it, but doing it while on RU-vid with his family present in view and judgement of everybody. Your son stayed calm, didn’t raise his voice and he continued on after the dog ‘caught him.’ Very impressive. A few inches to the left and he could have nearly lost his “Crown Jewels!” No wonder his Mum was not happy, could have ruined a dynasty! Seriously though, his perseverance is admirable, many would have stopped after receiving that wound.

Good job Georgie! I really enjoy watching you train these dogs because your dad just makes it look too easy so it’s nice to see some reality when you are not too experienced with these particular dogs. I see more of the real troubles I will have to deal with, even though you have way more experience than I do. I’m not only being taught what the dog will do, but also what I need to do when I screw up time and time again, and that with practice we all win if we stay patient and confident. Thanks so much for being a good example.

AND honorable mentions to Stonnie, who is retraining G to handle a different level of dog, retraining two bread for protection/attack dogs, being a dad and professional trainer, and changing the mindset of an audience, lastly your wife for holding it together at the scary parts of the training. Simply awesome and amazing family!!

My point to learning from other trainers, that slow down behavior worked really well. I have a Bouvier, very high energy, instead of laying down, she pounces down because laying down is too slow for her. Just turned 3 and now she is showing Personal Pertection Dog behavior. She did it just like the dogs you see fully trained on RU-vid. She herded them back to their truck while I was doing a Beaver Removal job. She called off quickly, came to me and laid down in front of me, with no training at all. Now I feel an urgency to give he formal training before she escalates to a bite on her own. I need full control over when and when not to bite.

This experience is teaching George so much more than “just” how to train protection dogs. I am able to watch him grow and develop as a trainer in parallel fashion to the dogs. I do not have kids but I take work as a Nanny. What I don’t tell my clients is that one of the reasons I’m good with their children is because I use many of the techniques and attitudes that have helped me train my dogs. I originally learned these by how I was raised by my grandmother. (I’m not saying kids are equal to dogs- it’s just that the very basic behavior management has a lot of similarities). Some examples include making sure they have a lot physical activity; respect is one of the most important qualities in the relationship; recognizing rewarding good behavior is more important than punishing bad behavior; following rules and guidelines may not be fun at the moment but they lead to the ability to have even more fun in the long run; boisterous, joyful playing should often be tolerated- on the other hand, quiet play is also important; each child is different and no one is perfect, no one can be “anything” they want if they just work hard, but we all can be the best versions of ourselves- we are bounded by our genetics, the education we receive, and quality of our teachers (parents, teachers, community members); a quality, structured environment will teach a lot in itself; isolation and lack of socializing will lead to behavioral and psychological anxiety and fear; good, stable peers/playmates and mentors are essential; behaviors and skills need to be structured for success and mistakes are usually not the fault of the child; instructions/requirements must reasonable and allow for success; everyone moves at they own pace, just because someone is slower does not mean they aren’t as “good” as the others; the goal is to have them be able to regulate their own behavior without being micromanaged; yelling and aggression are not necessary for correction; most skills require much practice and to keep doing that until it is mastered; the more distractions, the more difficult the task; just to be oneself, polite to others, listen to wise instructors and simply enjoy life is invaluable; being able to settle and quiet down is important; know when you need to ask for help with teaching from others; you need to be a leader and exhibit the qualities you expect of them; the end goal is just a loving, rewarding relationship and helping one to have the opportunity to work hard, play hard, rest well, and have a good life.

This is one of the best suggestions youtube has given me! I have a German Koolie who has confounded me. After watching these two weeks with Georgie...I now understand my dog better. I also have some wonderful tools to use so that I can be a more effective communicator. I particularly appreciate the session using the long-line, as I have physical challenges to overcome. I've paid so much blood price, from this dog who's so easily frustrated, that I was about to give up on him....and myself. I don’t know how I found your channel but I’m so glad I did. I have a Dobermann who is very hard work. I avoid playing fetch, tug, flirt pole etc as I always get bitten and jumped on. Her prey drive is through the roof and she has zero impulse control. I will definitely be following your training methods from now on.

I could hardly believe George was the same handler from last week! He had confidence, assertiveness and his body language was even different. The dog was different as a result. Had you not pointed it out that she bit him I would never have known it. Man those must be powerful jaws, he was already bruised! I hope your night in the kennel wasn't too bad 🤣😉

Really great training videos, enjoy watching George work the Shepherds. Our GSD rescue is a work in progress.
