Your analogy with 20 kids at a birthday party in your house but while also teaching curriculum is spot on!! This is exactly how I feel every day!!💯 It’s waaay more than “babysitting”!
As a middle school ELA teacher I can’t imagine juggling multiple subjects we have to teach one elective this year and it’s so overwhelming sometimes lol but I would love to be around littles. The relationships will build! Having 5 classes I love how different each class is lol 😅
I grew up in Polk Co, FL and my middle school was 4 department per group (grade level was decided by 2). And I had this one social studies teacher for 7th grade that has impact me so much that she has been my motivator of the type of teacher I strive to be. Her and a few other teachers are the reason I desired to be a teacher. So give it time, your making life changing impacts in many silent ways than just school

add on the reluctant students - logical consequences. If you can't sit on the carpet quietly like everyone else, you go back to your desk. If you are being disruptive during independent work, you go in the hallway for a few minutes. If you can't walk in line with everyone else, you miss a few minutes of whatever it is you are walking to.... Kids have to know the expectations and that there are consequences for not following them.
I’ve never been in first grade but keep an open mind!!! I always thought I wanted to do lower elem. and ended up loving upper!!! So keep an open mind and learn as much as you can!
When you fist got your new job you mentioned that the teachers cycle up with the students. Does that mean that you will be teaching 4th grade next year?
I have never taught 5th grade but one of my best friends does! I agree with Keagan, they love candy! They also love Takis! Usually hahaha Set high expectations but get to know them! They will listen to you so much more if they know they can trust you and respect you!
