Coutney! I am so happy to have found you! I was so lost on how to teach my dyslexic students how to spell. I am a Wilson Reading System practitioner but I honestly need additional methods, techniques and lessons to help my first and second grade kids! You are a GODSEND!!!! I have been teaching since 1984 (I'm old...LOL!). I live in Montville, NJ where I have my own Wilson reading tutoring home classroom. I also own a preschool (since 1996) and have incorporated Fundations into my pre-K and kindergarten classrooms. I love Fundations, however, I do feel I need more strategies, so I have incorporated Eye and Heart Words. Thanks to your videos, I will also be ditching the infamous Word Walls! My students have made so many incredible gains in reading but I am failing them in learning to spell. After a few Google and RU-vid searches, I found your videos! I am so hopeful now and cannot wait to implement the research you have broken down for. us as well as your suggestions on good spelling programs! THANK YOU so much!!!!! XOXOXO

Homeschooling mom here (former 4th grade teacher). Love your content. Very helpful! I have two children performing at different ends of the spectrum and I cannot tell you how much I would change if I went back into the classroom. You mention so many techniques that I think (now) are so important for some students. Thank you for helping others find effective methods to help the next generation. I’m especially interested in content that would help educate a school board and curriculum facilitator on the science of reading. Balanced literature failed my child greatly and I would love to hear your thoughts on specific curriculums that may help bridge the gap for struggling readers. Our homeschooling curriculum has worked wonders on my struggling child, but it would helpful to offer suggestions to our district so other kids aren’t “left behind”

Hi there! Thank you for your very kind comment! I am sorry to hear that your son’s experience in school was not fruitful. I would love to help school boards and facilitators one day! For now, I’m hoping by sharing research, I can help from the ground up. When it comes to different curriculum resources, I wish I had even the slightest idea about which ones are the best. I think it is important to think of curriculum resources as products and like any product, they rely heavily on marketing and appealing to a buyer. This is of course not to say that we don’t need good resources-we definitely do! However, I think our greatest resource is our desire to help our students. Any resource is only as good as the teacher using it and from what I’ve seen, you could give a teacher some dirt and sticks and they will find a way to teach every single subject. Teachers are so thirsty for information and my hope is that by offering research in an accessible way, we shift from being treated like passive consumers to empowered professionals. Have a lovely evening!

This was excellent, thank you! I am a homeschooling mom who is trying to use best-practices for effective instruction and this video made me feeling really good about the spelling curriculum that I chose for this year and the importance of teaching spelling (when I know that many homeschools and even public schools have stopped explicit instruction. The curriculum we started with last year (and dropped) used did group words in an effective way, but they used highly ineffective assignments (that never even included all of the words) for practice. I know we have spellcheck now, but I believe that being a good speller really does improve a person’s confidence and makes all other subjects easier. Thank you for this video.

@@courtneyannephd2618 always been focused on literacy . Was a grade 1,3,4, and 5 teacher over the years... been a reading specialist only the last five and still so much to learn . Was trained in balanced literacy approach but became woke/ enlightened not long ago to the science of reading. My district is beginning the journey of changing to more structured literacy approaches but it will be a years long progression.( in Massachusetts).

I am on the hunt for one too! I’m cautious about recommending anything because there’s a lot of due diligence that I would need to do. Look for something that has a set out scope and sequence based on phonics patterns. Also be sure that whenever you are introducing vocabulary for a unit or read aloud, that you write down the vocabulary you are talking about so students can see what the words look like. You can quickly point out a few features of the word - it doesn’t have to take long. Also, it’s okay to teach the 100 most common words as high-frequency words to give everyone a boost. If you have come across any programs that I could look at, send them my way for review!

@@courtneyannephd2618 Currently I'm thinking about using Words Their Way. Any thoughts on this program?
@courtneyannephd2618
@courtneyannephd2618 14 дней назад
We use that in our school- I only have experience with it as a Kindie teacher so it’s very picture-based at that level. When I start up again next week I’ll take a look at the more advanced programs and get back to you! I know a Waldorf school in my area used All About Spelling which is more of a homeschool program and I do like their scope and sequence too but I don’t know if they offer whole-class materials / what their values are as a company, etc. I’ll look at WTW for you though!
