Speaker: Chris Smith
Programmers are drawn to functional programming because of the natural fit with algebraic reasoning, but both algebra and computational thinking are also urgent concerns of K-12 schools and teachers. Algebra is recognized as the gateway to science and engineering, while computational thinking is seen as a new kind of literacy. Functional programming can join these fields together. It offers new relevance for algebra as a language to communicate ideas and express creativity. Algebra, on the other hand, unites a dizzying array of educational tools and activities with a universal language for working with information, decomposition, abstraction, and modeling - the fundamental ideas of computational thinking.
This presentation will share the experience of the CodeWorld project, through which hundreds of students aged 10 to 15 across the United States have learned early algebra through functional programming. This highlights how functional programming is not just a useful tool for the technology industry, but a fruitful vantage point for uniting fields of knowledge and developing young minds.
