Join my LIVE in my facebook group October 23rd at 11am EST where I am talking about moving from platform to independent teaching with your Chinese students: fb.me/e/2COVqP21M
Some of my parents do not want to use Zoom. What can I use instead? I'm worried that Tenecent will be a bit risky. Please help me:) I bought your website tutorial!
Great vids as always Tim! You're one of my go-tos in the online ESL Space! I caught at the end that you successfully use Wise for students in Hong Kong. Does HK have the same restrictions as the mainland (i.e. to Zoom, Google Suite, RU-vid, etc?). Are mainland China students able to use Wise also? I'm set-up for students in Europe, but navigating Chinese students is new. I have a student that recently moved to HK but will make visits to family on the mainland so we are trying to navigate how to best arrange lessons.
Hi, thanks so much! HK doesnt have the same restriciions as China. Unless Mainland Chinese have a VPN, they cannot. For China, I use Stripe with a WeChat payment integration to get paid by mainland Chinese students. I have a video on this on my channel.
@@onlineteacherdude1284 Appreciate the response Tim! I watched that video on payment integration (and the entire mix on Independent Teaching lol) to weigh the responses. Cheers from the Pyrenees!
100% on charging what you're worth. I've politely declined numerous parents who have a group set up through wechat/classin. Many have been trying to pay as close as possible to what they had paid for on other platforms. Interesting talk...some decent tips!
Interesting! Documents I read said it was K-9, but high school was exempt (after the zhongkao). The legal ruling was that companies could honor parents’ contracts, so I don’t know why some companies just absconded with parents’ money 😳. I am honestly guiltily happy about the local training school that had to shut down; when I worked briefly for them, it seemed mostly about show and very little about authentic learning, unlike the online platforms. Meanwhile, local companies like Shinyway have excelled because they offer quality products and were never just about elementary-age English language instruction. I am also still teaching 20+ classes a week for Q Kids, which is legally based in Hong Kong, but has HQ in Xiamen. I loved learning WHY Uber failed. How shortsighted! Re: payment methods. Good advice re: negotiation. I start at 300 rmb an hour but have adjusted for some local parents. Even so, I love Q Kids for its convenience, even though it equals out to 130 rmb an hour.
Hello Tim, great content! Important question, do you know of a website plugin that allows recurring appointments? For example: a student wants to 2 classes a week without buying a "package" (as you know parents are skittish). Stripe has a recurring billing, but no calendar booking system. 🤩 Thank you!
This was useful Tim. You did look tired then. I would like my WeChat verified because at the moment even my wife got hers verified from Vietnam but then had trouble ... I have no clue as to why? I will try with Michael here maybe. China is not the only country in the world but it is a huge market for students who at the moment many have wealthy parents. I look at getting rid of platforms as a good thing as they were middle people, taking a big cut.
Hello Teacher Tim, This video just popped in my feed. I am so sad that I missed the webinar. I've seen some of your videos and loved them. I had a VIPkid parent ask me to teach their child independently. I tutor American students independently, but how is this possible with the regulations in China? Is it legal for us? This video was really good, but a lot to process. I will join the Facebook group right away. Three immediate questions: 1) What do you use for curriculum? Is it your Own? for example, I pull different resources for my American students based on their areas of deficiency, but it's not a set curriculum. In that way, my VIPkid classes with slides were vastly different from regular tutoring 2) Is $35/ hour reasonable if I want to make at least $30? I heard you mention adding $5 for exchange rates. 3) Is Zoom an ok platform for just a couple students?
Hi Joanna! The webinar I did was in my facebook and you can join and watch. I am also running my going solo mini course again on Dec. 1 - the facebook group is in the video description. Also, you can buy premade curriculum. $35 is reasonable, yes. I charge a bit more but you can start with $35. Zoom is ok, yes. I have other options though.
I really would like to know HOW I can receive funds from my Chinese Student from China if I am in South Africa. It seems that Stripe is only available to Americans and other countries. I have a wechat account, so what are my other alternatives as a SA citizen?
I think Zoom is great, been using it for years. I have other options though: Voov, Zhumu, 2BeLive, Tencent, DingTalk, Classin - tons of options, but zoom works.
Another very interesting and useful interview. I've sent you a message in your coaching page and an e-mail. Hope you have received it. Still interested in taking the next steps.
You don't connect Stripe with your wechat account. Inside Stripe, you need to go to peyment methods and activate / enable Wechat Pay and AliPay - it has nothing to do with Wechat the app - you don't even need Wechat the app to get paid via Wechat pay into your bank account.
@@onlineteacherdude1284 thanks! I checked Stripe and it is still pending! So I shall be patient. Thanks for the video. Now to figure out how to add my availability schedule to my GoDaddy website. Lol There’s tomorrow…
I am very interested in teaching a few students. (One of the parents ha been ready to begin on 10/15:) I need someone to hold my hand and walk me through; platform, scheduling, payment; payment process,, etc. Do you know anyone who can walk me through this process? I am willing to pay a small fee for this service. Thanks you for all your great videos. I have been watching them for almost a year.
Hi there, Are you in my facebook group? I am doing a live on Friday in there about making decisions on what you are using and how to move forward, etc... I also do 1:1 coaching (links for this are in the video description). Thanks for watching the videos!
