“You need to click, pause, then reward” 😅 can immediately think of all the times I pre-prepared the reward. I never even realized this was the issue with the focus on the hand.

I greatly appreciate all your awesome content that you're providing people for free here on youtube. I'm looking into training a service dog for myself and it's been so helpful to have all this research material available before I get a dog.

I believe that persons who are wheelchair users may have to adapt, and not necessarily use a proper heal; I have used a regular, 6 foot leash, consistently it would get caught in gears and wheels to a very dangerous point. I sought advice, when, wheeling in a power chair, the controls over on the right hand side; the SDIT has to heal on the left. More importantly, using a 3 foot leash illuminates the problem of getting the lead caught in the wheels. If we come to a narrow space, as it is to the entry to my house, I allow the dog to fall behind me. She already has it experienced getting too close to the wheelchair and getting caught. There are ready made short leashes for this purpose. I have found this incredibly helpful and has given me peace of mind.

can you differentiate based on leash type? Like long lead (40ft) vs. 6ft. normal leash?

I have a quick question, I’ve been trying to get my puppy (7 month old) to not pull on the leash, because I want to eventually teach her heel. But, she’s big and VERY strong, and for basically her whole life we’ve just let her pull. I’m having a hard time getting her attention and teaching her that when I stop I don’t want her to pull at all (the consistency where you don’t move when the leash is tight) another problem is my family also lets her pull all the time and I’m the only one training her. Do you have any advice or tips?

So the first step is probably working on being able to get her attention when you're outside. We actually talked about my favorite exercise for teaching this in part one and two of our free workshop that is going on right now, which you can find here if you're interested: myservicedogandme.mykajabi.com/workshop

This really helps. My SDit has started pulling and discouraged me because he never has before. I’m on crutches, and I was trying to shorten the leash and think I created pulling simply by needing to move the leash with each step. I will make the leash longer to avoid me pulling him, hopefully that will help. Any tips? Thank you!!!

Can you explain why you don’t distribute same hand for treat as the side they are on? I found that people who use opposite hand, end up having issues with their dog jumping in front of them slightly.

@myservicedogandme Год назад
I find that with proper use of a marker and good mechanics with your treat dogs don't come in front of the handler. But I do find that handlers that treat with the hand on the side the dog is on tend to start luring accidentally leading to other issues. Like most physical training skills, either seems to work great as long as the handler has clean and consistent mechanics :)

@@myservicedogandme thanks for explaining this! They teach you in rally and obedience to always treats same hand so I was just curious :)

You can certainly ask questions here, but I'm not always able to give super detailed answers without knowing more about you and your dog that we can do in RU-vid comments. But for pulling on potty breaks, you'll want to start using a harness for potty breaks, then being really 100% consistent about never moving forward when the leash is tight.

Start by checking out the focus videos I have on the channel, because really, what you need is to teach focus. Then, you could consider the use of a gentle leader, which I also have a video on. They're not right for everyone, and they have to be conditioned appropriately, but they can help you manage the sniffing while you work on teaching a good leave it :)

I don't know everything. I've be looking into training a dog to be a service dog for myself. It depends on the dog and what you need from a service dog. There is a big difference from a seeing eye dog to a psychiatric dog.
