I appreciate that you do repeat reviews of books like these. I forget about them sometimes

Really love this book! I got it off eBay based on your recommendation, studying it every single day and have been doing the exercises, done a bit challenging. I'm on chapter 4 now on Relations. Really love it. Another good one is Book of Proof by Richard Hammack

Years ago, I needed to know something about Group Theory (motivated by crystal symmetry and electronic structure), so I took an Abstract Algebra course from the Mathematics Department. I'm a Physics/Engineering Geek, so I compute stuff; and trust the Mathematicians to prove stuff. I went into the class without "knowing the rules of the game".

Yes, that is true. This proof-oriented reasoning is the highest level that can be achieved in mathematics. Many professors, especially the good old professors, rightly say that you only learn to prove things after university, namely in research. Best regards.

I read that book for a class on writing proofs. It was an enjoyable experience. Of course, occasionally it was challenging; some of the proofs are pretty lengthy. But the deductive process is well-defined in each of many types of logical reasoning.

The most recent edition, edition 3, has solutions to at least some of the exercises from each chapter in an appendix at the back. Continues to be a great book.

"I already have proof-writting books, do I really need another one? and so, I bought it...." Brother, I own more than 3000 books, I know that feeling very well. I'm with you. P.S. I'm always eagerly looking forward for the book-sniffing section of the video. Keep up the good work!

What helped me understand math proofs was taking a course in symbolic logic from the philosophy department. If you can't take a course, then get a book on symbolic logic. It will help you understand the basic structure of proofs.

I also have these books: The Nuts and Bolts of Proofs by Antonella Cupillari How to Read and Do Proofs by Daniel Solow
@brianaicheler6253
@brianaicheler6253 7 дней назад
The book by Solow is accompanied by a series of videos. Together they comprise a good course and well recommended. As Solow states proof writing is as much an art as a science, it is creative and in that sense it cannot be taught. The only way to become proficient is to "do proofs" i.e. get your hands dirty, much the same as Math is not a spectator sport, you need to get involved. Reading proofs is the gateway to a whole host of other topics. My opinion is that proof reading and writing are essential if you wish to go further and really understand the how and why of mathematics.

I think the proof writing book by Chartrand and co “Transition to Advanced Mathematics” is superior to this book by Velleman. Especially considering that the Chartrand book gives detailed answers

I have read the first two chapter of this book, and did almost all the problem in this book. One thing that I would say that this book is very detailed, anyone can pick up this book and learn from it since it doesn't demand any prerequisite knowledge to understand the chapters. However this book is quite tedious and unless you have strong focus, you'd eventually lose interest in learning it.
@ProjectCosmonaut-kb3ht
@ProjectCosmonaut-kb3ht 8 дней назад
I would say the reasons you think that is because the first two chapters are focused on logic, which is a little tedious in my opinion (but I guess it is necessary, or at least advantageous) I did not do proof writing with this book, but it should get much more enjoyable when you will get to prove algebraic statements and it will only get better from then on!

I’m going to get this book. But aside from that.. once more: Is mathematics discovered or invented? Kronecker famously thought everything except the integers was invented. Chomsky recently said sets and set theory are human inventions. Paul Halmos thought it was all discovered. Erdos seems to me to think at least all the most perfect proofs exist in platonic fashion in “the book”. What say ye, dear Sorcerer?

It is unthinkable to me that there exist math courses that aren't proof based.
