Your guide is Journeyman Falconer Joanne Bentley, a practitioner with over 15 years experience in the handling and schooling of birds-of-prey, and her support-team of assistants including Joseph Norris, Andrew & Megan Lemon, Chris Wright, and Bruce Lane.
With light-hearted humour and a gentle, informational approach, Jo will guide you in understanding the techniques of “winning” one’s Feathered-companion - first in earning their willingness to work with us, then - in our case - to work for the eye of the camera.
Jo's desire is to inspire established and new participants, wildlife enthusiasts, birders, and the wider public. This passionate Journeyman Falconer seeks to inform and introduce humanity to the intangible “living human-heritage” (UNESCO 2010) to which every one of us may lay claim through the Art of Falconry.
Thank you for watching!

Hi have you heard of a bird molting like all done then start molting again
@TheFalconLady
@TheFalconLady 4 года назад
Good afternoon Jason; An unusual question, for sure - surprisingly, I've witnessed _something_ like what you're describing quite recently... When 'Pfeiffer' arrived to us in what could only have been described as a "hideous condition", it appeared he hadn't - actually - brought down much in the way of new feathers, (recall the fact 'Pfeiffer' arrived in mid-August, so he ought to have been well into the moult by then). He was malnourished (almost complete muscle-wasting), and bore other *obviously* long-standing injuries on his little body; the fact he survived the flight from Ontario to British Columbia in the condition he arrived in continues to astound me when I reflect on it... He was - among other things, immediately introduced to the superior diet I've always offered "Team Feathers", namely (mostly) quail, grass-fed beef, and mice. Within a week of his arrival, he began pushing down almost the entirety of his train...I didn't know it was _possible_ for a raptor to bring down all their tail-feathers at once, and here it was happening right before my eyes. To say what we were witnessing was a 'red flag' for me would be an understatement; it was a clear indication 'Pfeiffer' hadn't received any more food-intake than was necessary to keep him alive - and then only _just_ ! So his moult began in earnest in mid-to-late August of 2019, and *kept going* until mid-January of 2020! He briefly stopped moulting for about six weeks, then started again...I had such hopes for this year, and took every reasonable measure to protect him from himself so we could achieve a great moult, however his largely unstable emotional state undermined this pretty much the whole way through the endeavour, and he broke every lovely flight and tail-feather his body generated. Incredibly disheartening and frustrating, to say the least. Other than the example of 'Pfeiffer'', I've not - personally - heard of a bird-of-prey moulting out, then starting all over again. Do you have a feathered-companion who is currently experiencing this...? 🤔 I'll look forward to hearing from you, Jo

@@jasonroberts1682 Hello again, Jason - it seems reasonable hormones would play a role...my understanding is its *_usually_* connected to lengthening daylight hours, (thus - under normal circumstances - moulting "switching on" in the Spring, and wrapping up around late-September, early October), which has an effect on hormonal cycles in our feathered-companions. What are you feeding your Gyr x Saker...? Beef thyroid can bring on the moult, but one has to be *quite* careful in using it as a method for kicking the moult into gear. You might also consider touching-base with the ICBP (International Centre for Birds-of-Prey), or the HCT (Hawk Conservancy Trust) for some insights - there might be something else at play here, so its good-practice to consult with multiple individuals to pull together something of a "consensus opinion". I'd definitely encourage you to also touch-base with a couple of veterinarians with bird-of-prey expertise for their input too. 😉 Best, Jo

Good evening William; Thank you so much for your kind thoughts - it means a great deal to me to know we're in your thoughts. I've taken the last year off to really regroup and look at what direction I want to go in, be that in the form of continuing to work with the Feathered, or pursuing more of what life and the wider world is waiting to show me. The work to obtain a just decision for 'Pfeiffer' is slowly bearing fruit too - we recently cleared the first legal hurdle with the individual who sold him to us, and we're now awaiting a date for a full on trial. A lot has been going on here's at 'Falcon's Rest', to be sure! I'm hoping to have some new videos up on the channel in the New Year once we've settled into the winter routine...keep sending good thoughts our way, and I'll do my best. Thanks again William, Jo
