@@Amaling who says anime isn't mainstream he indirectly indicates anime is mainstream otherwise he/she won't pick this type of topic another reason haikyu is so good because the anime is adapted by the same studio which did kurokos basketball (Though from season 4 part 2 the pace of haikyu is becoming slower whether you agree or not like season there was a single match of 5 sets in 10 episodes but now there are 12 episode for a match of 3set)
@@stoicauritra7147 that's not really accurate about the pacing. The whole match will be 10 episodes, considering that two were a Nekoma match, and the last episode or two are not gonna be the match. Still slower, but a bit less than you say. Anyways, I don't care because episode 9 was godlike!!!
I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, but when the author first started writing Haikyuu enrollment in HS Men's Volleyball in Japan was at an all time low. The author wanted to inspire people to play volleyball, and it worked.
@@ErikShojivolleyball as Kelsey mentioned, here is the Haikyuu!!! Documentary (with Eng Sub) and its impact on Japan's volleyball scene. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uxwc5v8Sqbg.html
We actually don’t know the author’s gender. Here overseas the fandom mostly think the author is a male but in Japan the fandom there think that the author is a female. ( they never revealed it I think )So we don’t know if it was in the woman’s team or the men’s ( no hate just putting that out there ) ( and that’s what I’ve been inform with I could be wrong)
Damn, he changed Japan’s world of volleyball entirely. I cant express the emotion he probably went through when he finished making the last chapter. Hell, I couldn’t.
It does inspire me to play volleyball, the thing is that my body isn’t great fit for hard sports like volleyball the least thing i can do is probably Serve. And i could be a pinch server
Concerning the balls: The anime is sponsored by both companies Molten & Mikasa so they keep switching it up to ensure screen time for both companies I think
@@Jaker788 If you're interested in the sponsorships, just pay attention to the credits. They're usually listed at the end. I can't tell you anything about potential differences as I haven't played much volleyball myself.
Im starting now cause of haikyuu too! I’m overweight so I know it will be hard at the beginning. But you gave me hope. Thank you for being my inspiration
Fun fact, the original manga has ended this year, and to celebrate they did a collaboration with the Japanese V-League, I think that shows just how big haikyuu got to be
@@leahjsjsjs well it's more incredible that oikawa is mentioned as a professional volleyball player in Real Argentine Team as one of their own players!
When a pro libero is impressed with the technique in haikyuu is when you know that the anime is legit lol. Edit: came back and found out my comment had this many likes. Awe :). Glad to know I am making some disccusions on my post 😁😁
Np. I don’t play volleyball, but I do know some teams in various sports use music terms (not necessarily because it is from music) which I find cool. This doesn’t mean everyone uses those terms.
the creator of the show was a middle blocker in high school i think thats why the show is super good with its details. thanks for the vid erik and congrats on your win
@@gabrielespinal9292 There's nothing wrong with it, if you like it then enjoy playing it. We always struggle to find people to play middle on our men's team, every team in the league does, and the ones who do play middle are often asking if they can play left side sometime lol. The middle touches the ball the least, gets libbed out half the time, and has to approach/jump for his attack every single time, even if he might only get set 1 out of 9 times. Though on a young team, the right side might actually be the least used player(unlike in higher levels).
@@user-iu1ru1qz7u I have to agree middle is one of least preferred positions in volleyball, mainly because I feel like it is one of most athletically taxing positions other than setter, main outside hitter, and oppo (in higher level play). It's not only that the middle has to approach every time like he will get the set, but the middle has to close out to the pins on every block, while trying to read if the opposing middle is going to be set. Just having to run back and forth and jumping full bore is extremely taxing on your legs, especially if you're an undersized middle.
Yeah, that surprised me a bit, in a cool way. I was glad to see that it isn't just the people who don't know volleyball (like me) who are intimidated by him.
The author of this show, Furudate was a middle blocker and played do a decently high level in highschool, but dropped out since he couldnt see himself making big time in the sport. I am glad for that, since he was able to become a full fledged author, gave us this gem and increased the interest in volleyball by several times and not only in Japan.
@@a.a3550 Haruichi is typically a male name in Japanese and the official Viz translation uses male pronouns, however, there are a few reasons to believe the author is female. For one, the art style of the manga is similar to other female artists and prominently features the female gaze. Also, female characters are never sexualized, which is extremely common by male mangaka. There is a video that shows Haruichi’s hand and it’s honestly impossible to tell if it’s a woman’s hand or just a somewhat feminine male’s hand. Based on name alone, Haruichi is most likely a man, but that could also be a pen name so who knows. Fun fact: the name “Haruichi” has 12 different meanings depending on how the Kanji is written out
@@a.a3550 You’re welcome! Here’s the video of Haruichi’s hand if you’re curious: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qqwbDmHZ_60.html I’m no expert on the Japanese language, but I have some basic knowledge of Kanji, Katakana, and Hiragana from college courses I’ve taken for foreign language credits. I say Haruichi is most likely a male name because -ichi is usually male. In Romanji (romanticized version of Jpanese), some other common endings to male names are -o (Shoy*o* Hinata), -ji (Kei*ji* Akaashi), and -dai (*Dai*chi Sawura). Female names can have these endings, but it’s much less common.
They said in one of the episodes that he is their best player and one of the best liberos in the country. I think him and Kageyama are supposed to be their only “national tier players”
@@intanhartinie322 yes, he was really qualified for that but I think they also mentioned that they might not have chosen Noya because of his “childish/rowdy” attitude. Skill wise, he was worthy, there was also another libero in that training camp tho.
Hinata, bokuto, and all the short middle blockers/wingspikers are also unrealistic. The shortest players are around tskuki height. Also nobody is able to reliably do quicks like kageyama with that level of accuracy and speed. I guess some things have to be unrealistic otherwise I would just watch actually volleyball matches.
@@shaunakkulkarni4679 I read somewhere that the most unrealistic thing in this anime was Kageyama's passes ! So you're right but dont forget that is a high school volleyball club, and its not that usual in Japan to have really tall people and even if there is one or two tall guys, they can play another sport. I dont know if you red the manga but you find some answers in the end of it 😊
@@shaunakkulkarni4679 Ive seen a minus tempo vid here in youtube. The spiker already jumps and the toss comes to him. But they only did it twice in practice and another one in real match.. their opponents where so shocked when they did the minus tempo just like in haikyuu 😂
@@shaunakkulkarni4679 well they're highschool players and it's set in Japan where there's plenty of shorter players. Maybe not Hinata short but they're not all gonna be tsukis height
@@julynightowl7413 the reason why haikuu quicks are unrealistic is because kageyama can make them stop mid air after season 2. He also sets minus tempo cross court to Hinata which is crazy.
na primeira parte da temporada 4, eles lutaram contra um time pequeno no nacional, um dos primeiros jogos eu acho. e la teve o saque jornada das estrelas, esse saque veio do brasil, então deve ser por isso q o autor veio pro brasil

Me: **fangirling over not only how he approves of all the moves Noya does, he wishes he could be so accurate...also bc Noya is h o t** Him: AGHHH THAT FORMATION! Me: AAGGHHHH! THAT PHOTO!!
I actually find it really cool to know that they’ve, whether on accident or not, put in little mistakes in Nishinoya’s form! Like he’s a high school player, so it would be unrealistic for him to be completely perfect. He’s really skilled so he might be great at a lot of things to the point that Erik is jealous lmao, but he still needs to keep his platform together more because he’s not a professional. This was such a cool commentary, thank you dude!!!
I mean, like have yall considered the fact that when noya receives with his hand flat that the ball is being spiked at his hand SUPER hard- i'm a libero so- oUcH XD
I feel like the reason a lot of volleyball players have started to watch Haikyuu was because of sth like this: Volley player: “Quarantinr sucks I can’t play as much as I used to, I’m bored” That one weeb friend: “Watch Haikyuu”
The creator of the source material for the anime (the mangaka Furudate) was a middle blocker and played in high school. Please watch season 2 and beyond!!! Nishinoya and the other characters develop so much!!
Volleyball is such a fun sport! Though i struggle a lot in it , im only 5'1 and am done growing, so when i finally started playing as a libero i was so happy! I actually look up to you a lot so its really cool that you also find Noya as such a big inspiration, even if he is fictional lol. Sadly i wont be able to play volleyball for a while due to a knee and back injury (thank you to that amazing spiker for making me push myself in that game tho) so your videos will definitely keep me motivated!
THIS WAS SO COOL TO SEE YOU COMMENT ON HIS TECHNIQUE!! So glad you enjoy haikyuu too from a different perspective since you actually play professionally!!! also congrats on your win!!!
This anime is what got me into Volleyball. Been seriously playing for 3-4 years now. Leveled up from trying to pass with burning forearms to pancaking and jump serving, good times.
I love your reactions! This got recommended to me after searching up one of your volleyball games because I’ve binged this show recently and it’s amazing and so cool to see a real pro player react to the show thanks for that
The creator of the show used to play volleyball as a middle blocker. He couldn't make a living doing volleyball so he decided to create an anime of the sport he loved so much. The tech and teaching is so impressive. I wasn't a fan of volleyball but after reading this I became one. Im 5'3 so I didn't think I could play. I pretty much played everything else lol. Honestly, I suggest you watch the full eps. They really dive into the teaching aspect as well.
@@ErikShojivolleyball I was on varsity badminton in high school. Actually my team and I are world record holders. ''Record 504-game winning streak broken by Smithtown in 2005. The streak was featured in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest sports winning streak in U.S. history. It began in 1973 and did not end until the team was defeated in a match by Smithtown High School, 10-5, in 2005.'' But now im disabled. I can't really move around like I used too. BUT! I have been enjoy haikyuu and watching volleyball! Its truly a fun sport.
Haikyuu introduced me to volleyball. From there I looked up national teams clips and matches and got hooked on it. Last year (my sophomore year), I went for my high school team, but sadly there was no jv team so I didn’t make it, but the coach was nice enough to let anyone who didn’t make it practice with the varsity team. I was the only one who failed that went and when I got better, the coach put me on the team, but sadly covid happened and I’m sad because I’m still really bad.
Ex volleyball player here! During quarantine try to do sets like hinata does. Where’s he tries to keep the ball up and moves from a standing position to a laying position, this is very difficult but is very got training because you will have better mobility of the ball. Another thing is setting, set to a wall, to people, this makes finger training easier. Also don’t worry, those who want to reach the top must first start from the bottom. Have fun training and keeping in shape!!
Legit!! My fiancé got me into Haikyuu because he's really into volleyball. When I asked him to send me clips of great real-life liberos, he just sent me multiple clips of Erik (which were all awesome). When I saw this in my recommended, I actually squealed with delight. :)
The animators were not volleyball players! But the art director for season 1-3 is very good at anatomy and is very meticulous. He did his best to make things accurate and has the experience and leadership to pull it off. The author was a middle blocking in school and they wanted a boys volleyball manga because volleyball wasn't popular in Japan. Literally inspired a giant volleyball resurgence in Japan ^^. Haha there was just an epic roll in the latest episode (just aired this week), yess rolling receives deserves respecttt!! They mainly laughed because he's such a nerd to name his "special move" rolling thunder. They actually respect him a lot!
Some haikyuu fandom : haikyuu isnt THAT realistic Pro volleyball players : Im shocked at how realistic Haikyuu is. I literally argued with someone, who in the fandom, on twitter about this. Anyway, great videos always and im excited on whats next 😄😄 i hope you will react to kobata mako, the libero from japan women's team🙏🙏
I think it’s more about how characters have time to say whole dialogues in the middle of rallies while the ball is slowly falling/moving. Obviously volleyball in real life goes much faster. But from reaction videos I’ve seen, almost everyone says that the mechanics and technique are actually really good and realistic.
@@Exoquell To be fair, many people do go through the same or similar thought processes in their heads during games. They just don't have an eternal monologue, so the thoughts happen abstractly and sometimes in fractions of seconds. That's not very useful when developing a narrative, so the author gives a voice to these thoughts. For example, when Nishinoya saves the ball with his foot, he was definitely conscious of the fact that he couldn't save it with his hands in those milliseconds the ball was still in the air. In real life, he might not have actually said it in his mind, but the sentiment is still the same.
@@Exoquell yeah what the person above said and it’s shonen anime without the monologue it wouldn’t have any dramatic effect just watching them play volleyball, the screams and their thoughts are what really hypes us up
@@GojoDKai I'm not saying it's a bad thing that it's unrealistic. I love watching Haikyuu to hear the thought process of certain characters and it does indeed hype me up. I just wanted to point out that of all the things that Haikyuu displays realistically, characters reading off paragraphs of lines inside their head is not one of them. I'm also not denying that people are actively thinking while playing, because I'm sure they do. Just, again, not to the extent shown in the anime for dramatic effect.
@@Exoquell yeah my point is that there can only be a certain degree of realism to make it something people want to watch because if it was just volleyball only people who watch real volleyball would be watching Haikyu.
I'm not a sports person whatsoever but I do watch volleyball sometimes and I usually keep my eyes on the attacks and not really appreciating the passes. Not until I watched Haikyu. It made me appreciate the receives and the Liberos a lot more, and even get hyped more for good passes more so than the attacks. This anime really is amazing.😊
yt just recommended this to me after i watched so much haikyuu, and i never realized how cool volleyball is in real life, too!! (Just finished watching the game you mentioned) officially a fan. Very cool
you should totally see the entire show. (im writing this even before watching your video, so I dont have an idea if you have been watching the series actually.) the way that the characters develop is so good.
When people ask me what I think the best anime adaptation of a shounen manga is, I always answer Haikyuu. It's not just the music or the eye-candy animation or voice acting like it is with other anime. With Haikyu, you can tell that the people who worked on it just love volleyball and have done so much research to bring the volleyball from the manga to life in such a realistic way. Every single shot is filled with such fluid posture and technique from each character. I've seen anime before with great animation that they only put into creating flashy explosions and with zero substance for how it's being used. That's why it's nice to see an anime like Haikyu that is a lot more subtle yet just as if not more impressive with its animation.
Libero is such a cool position! I'm glad how much this anime has inspired people all across the world to pick up the sport, it really made me fall in love with it. I'd kill to be able to train properly and be part of a team, that's on my post-pandemic list!
I just love how inspiring Nishinoya is to all of us - even to an amazing Libero like Erik Shoji! Damn, this show is giving me chills all the time and makes me wanna play even more! But quarantine is f*cking us all up rn, I guessXD Btw congrats to the win!
Yes Erik, I've watched haikyuu back in high school and started playing vball bc of it. its been 4 years now and rn im playing regional lvl with the uni ( wing spiker)
one of my favourite things about this show is that everything you're taking notice of now, all the techniques they've perfectly animated to replicate actual skilled volleyball players - it's not like it's only noya they've done this with. every single character in every single position has been animated with the same precision and expertise in such an insanely fast moving game - it's literally incredible
this was an amazing reaction. love how honest you were and I love the anime and was I thought it was realistic, but never really knew for sure until now!
ooo actually yes!! the creator of haikyuu is Haruichi Furudate; he/she/other (not publicly known) did play volleyball in junior high and was a middle blocker. They are very keen with volleyball which can explain the crazy realistic details of the sport in Haikyuu! lol i love volleyball and then i found haikyuu a year ago, and i love it 😂
I barely know anything about the sport but damn, it's so cool to know that this series (despite my lack of knowlege about the game) is quite spot on with real life volleyball, all the while being fun and engaging to watch the characters grow, glad I somehow got this video reccomanded to me by RU-vid
I'm so happy I've found this video!!! I just love Nishinoya and it's really interesting to see what a professional libero thinks about him! (Sorry for my English, I'm not a native speaker...)
Loved the video Erik! I highly recommend watching the show (and maybe doing some commentary/reviews of it). You see a lot of character growth and they go in depth about technique/theory; would love to see your thoughts on it!
I just wanna say its absolutely amazing that you were super shocked by Nishinoya's foot receive when you're the mad lad who set a perfect ball with your leg! Subscribed!
