Dream Team III 96 Vs USA Select 90 | 07-06-1996 | Team USA Olympics The 1996 Team USA Basketball, known as the Dream Team III, narrowly defeats the USA Select team comprised of the best collegiate players from 1996.
I actually attended this game at the Palace back in 1996. It was their first exhibition match on a five city tour. Still have the ticket stub, too!!! Great memories.
Tim Duncan was already quite good back in 1996. It's amazing that 8 years later, Duncan-led Dream Team featuring so many young super talents couldn't win the Olympics in Athens.
Nah Tim Duncan folded with the leadership and couldn't mesh with the other stars. Tim Duncan wasn't as transcendent as many want to believe. He couldn't carry a team or take over like people like to believe.
@@PIP...33 I do agree Pippen is born to be great. No1 can make other ppl great if they are not born with talent. And this media narratives how Pip was made by MJ well as you said, he never do that in his life cause Hornets are among last teams last 2 decades because of him, and prior that Stackhouse, RIP Hamilton and Larry Hughes claim that Jordan ruined their career and they were better pre or post Washington (what is true cause Stackhouse led NBA in scoring 29 ppg, Hamilton beat Kobe and Shaq for ring, Hughes was main guard in LeBron James run early playoffs) . Jordan made other ppl worse.
@@Celtics6-0vsMonkeyJordan YES AND IF U PUT MITCH RICHMOND WITH THAT BULLS TEAM HE WOULD WIN 6 OR 7 RINGS CAUSE HE IS COMPLETE PLAYER FAR BETTER SHOOTER. JORDAN LITTLE BETTER ON PERIMETER DEFENSE AND DUNK BUT EVERYTHING ELSE PASS, POST DEFENSE, AND OF COURSE SHOOT, RICHMOND FAR SUPERIOR.
Actually it was Hakeem who saved that game, and made it possible for Pippen\Payton to be more effective by completely shutting down the post. While he was in they only had 6 points in the paint and 4 of them came in the last 2 minutes he was in the floor when he was obviously exhausted.
Missed this game back 1996 but watching it today in 2020 was awesome. Brings back alot of memories of watching my favorite players from the 80s and 90s.
@@PIP...33 the original dream team was better but this team is extremely good 👍😊👌😊 Shaq was indeed dominant, but not unstoppable. He was defeated by Jordan many times... Shaq is DEFINITELY an all time great though...
How ironic in that building just 8 years later.. Chaun See Billups would win an NBA Title and an MVP. Karl Malone would play his final game. Shaq, Malone and Payton watched their Laker tenure end in a finals loss and Austin Croshere was on the team that had the biggest brawl.. My oh my the mighty Palace.
@@2ndservace the crazy thing that rarely gets mentioned, he banged down low in the roughest Era of all time, at the arguably roughest position. Going against guys like Rodman, Charles Oakley and young Karl Malone... all while massively undersized for the power forward at like 6'4". Barkley was just a special special player, his personality added to it as well imo. I couldn't imagine battling with that fucking guy for 40 mins. Late 80s Era NBA was some Era, if you aren't a total gangster just go play another sport should have been it's motto.
this game is so good to watch, fast pace, everything is so tight and link together Love the hustle , body contact, you can see the players play like around 6 mins and already sweat all over from the head to their body! USA select play so well too, so high shooting %, and Barkley just carry back! I hope USA select can have other all-star player such as Kevin Garnett, Vince Carter, Tracy McGrady, Iverson, Camby, Rasheed Wallace, Jason Kidd, Antonio McDyess,
Always thought Pat Riley or Phil Jackson should have been the coach of Dream Team 3. Dream Team 2 is actually very underrated. I sitll own all this games in dvd. So fun to watch back then.
I thought Pat Riley should have coached Dream Team 1. The Pistons had no fans outside of Michigan so it made no sense to reward Chuck Daley the coaching duties
That college all star team had some talented players. 2 sure fire Hall of Famers in Tim Duncan and Paul Pierce, as well as a possible Hall of Famer in Chauncey Billups.
@@ianburns2436 lol yea right. the iverson marbury olympic team was a massive failure. Now your takin them before their prime and vs the 2nd greatest team ever assembled.
@@josereyes1148 well I mean it’s an exhibition and did you not see the score for this game here? They only won 96-90. Plus this years Olympic tea, lost twice in exhibitions. Though I wouldn’t play Marbury on any team if I wanted to win lol.
Remember, Michael Jordan had the option to join the 1996 USA Team but chose to rest for the summer after spending the previous summer getting back into basketball shape and getting back to his legendary self. He was graceful to allow Mitch Richmond to have his spot because he never got his due in playing at Sacramento.
The often forgotten but also dominant, like no U.S. afterwards, Dream Team III (or Olympic Dream Team II). It was an amazing team one Michael Jordan away from being the best team in history. It was better formed, and much higher combined talent, than the original Dream Team with all members at the top of their game.
USA U-22 Team had some very intresting players and it will turn out the future some real NBA legends too like Tim Duncan, Paul Pierce, Chauncy Billups (3 HOF players) , Anthony Parker was also very good player although he left deeper trace in Europe then in NBA ( legend of Maccabi Tev Aviv) , Louis Bullock also made a nice career in Europe (especially i mean on his prime period from Real Madrid) , Austin Croshere, Brevin Knight and Brian Skinner were nothing so special but they also had a relatively decent NBA careers.
Imagine a young Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, Ray Allen, Stephon Marbury, Marcus Camby, Jermaine O’Neal, and Antoine Walker added to that Select Team to play with Duncan, Billups, and Paul Pierce.
@ricaldo ritchie it would be close but experience would win out. The select team is still too green and inexperienced to beat a team with a prime Jordan, Barkley, Malone, Robinson, Ewing, Pippen, Stockton, Drexler and Mullin. Plus Magic could still ball and Larry could still shoot just his back would make him a defensive liability
I guess they didn't play because they were already drafted into the NBA, but it would have made them much stronger. The following draft year was good but not as impressive as 2016's.
Great game even if a lil unfair with Hakeem playing but he deserved the opportunity. Wow forgot how great Pippen was and Robinson. Duncan was already handling business. A young Billups, Pierce also.
I swear if someone would draft whole roster of Team Selected in 1996, it would be great 10 year dinasty for rings. They were students and would fit in any NBA team payroll
The 1996 Olympics are now most famous for future Pro Wrestling Legend Kurt Angle winning a gold medal with a "BROKEN FREAKIN" NECK" By this time this team got to Atlanta, there was discord between Shaq and Penny who found out by watching ESPN and SportsCenter that Shaq had just signed with the Lakers which in turn pissed him off.
@ the very first play of the game.. announcer says 'hard, tough screen' and I thought so too.. until I watched it back and saw that there was no screen!!! Just Reggie doing Reggie to get open!!
The select teams usually play these Olympic teams well... in 1984 Jordan and the Olympic team of amateurs beat up on the NBA stars of 84 yes Bird Magic and Isiah 8 games to zero... it wasn’t rare for these collegiate squads to muscle up with the veteran NBAers... it makes you wonder when athletic prime truly is because often times the 19 20 year olds 11 deep make 25 to 30 year olds 11 deep sweat a little bit.
Lenny Wilkens Charles Barkley Grant Hill Penny Hardaway David Robinson Scottie Pippen Mitch Richmond Reggie Miller Karl Malone John Stockton Shaquille o Neal Gary Payton Hakeem Olajuwon
@@sakimtornado not to mention players staying 3 or the full 4 years in college was still the norm and not the exception then also. So these guys were more polished fundamentally and skill wise. At least when compared to the guys jumping to the NBA after 1 or 2 years in college nowadays.
Shaq said this team would beat the first dream team. I don’t see it from this. Maybe a bad game but the guys they’re playing here are hardly dream team 1.
In the Barcelona '92 original Dream Team Charles Barkley was jersey #14 & David Robinson #5. I always want to know why they change jersey numbers in the Atlanta '96 Dream Team III to #4 & #7? Karl Malone & John Stockton keep their jersey numbers 11 and 12.
This 96 Dream Team is better than the original 92 team. Bird was done and couldnt even sit in a chair anymore, Magic was past his prime, and Christian Laettner was on the team instead of Shaq. The 96 team had more than enough upgrades to make up for not having Jordan. The whole squad was in their prime.
Do you only have the preliminary games uploaded for this olympics? Nothing of the actual olympic rounds?. And now that i watched the whole game, it was a matter of effort for the dream team, once they matched the select teams effort into the 2nd half, they were able to pull ahead.
Karl Malone was better. Tim always had David Robinson, Manu, Parker, Bowen, Elliot, Kawhi I mean what are we talking about. Malone had Stockton that’s it. Tim Duncan was drafted to a 60 win powerhouse team in Spurs. Only reason they had the opportunity to draft him was the year before 6 games into the season Robinson had a season ending injury. Duncan played with more talent and those are facts
One thing for sure- this team and all subsequent USA teams, took it seriously- they put real effort. I'm not saying the original Dream team didn't put any effort, but you can see in those games- saving for lapses- they were just basically having fun- I'd say they were putting more effort in the defensive end that in the offensive end- excepting Barkley.
1:31:00 This young dude landed shoulder first. But he just shook it off, stood up and play. I can see today's young cats going back to the locker room after this fall.
Whatever happened to Shea Seals? Dude was a straight up baller. I can only assume injuries.... cause I can't see what else keeps a shooting guard like this from opportunities in the NBA.
7 minutes in and I got questions. + 1. Since when is 96 the Dream Team. only 92 is the Dream Team 2. Penny Hardaway is not a foreward. even the graphic said guard. 3. Grant Hill is not wearing number 4. the graphic said 5 4. since when is Akeem Olajuwon American?
