In the quarter-finals of the World Cup, Germany won a 1-0 victory over France. The hero of the match was Mats Hummels, who returned to the field after an illness and scored with his head after a free kick from Toni Kroos in the 12th minute. This goal was the only one in the match and secured the Germans a place in the semi-finals against the tournament hosts, Brazil.
