Reverend Robert Lee is a descendant of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.

Debate is raging in the US around symbols like the Confederate Flag and statues of Confederate leaders. For one side, they are just remembering history, but others see them as racist and pro-slavery.
When far-right nationalists marched in protest in Charlottesville to defend a statue of General Lee, his descendant spoke out against them and said his grandfather’s statue should be torn down.
In the 'What I've Learnt' series, we speak to everyday people about the profound events that have shaped their lives and what they've learnt. It's a series that uncovers the extraordinary stories hidden and untold within our society.

Ironically, though he is seen widley as a slaver, was it not true that he detested slavery? Was it not also true that he disagreed with secession? From my understanding, limited as it admittedly is, Robert E. Lee refused the union generalship as he refused to draw his sword against his fellow Virginians.
@RaylaEclipse
@RaylaEclipse 4 года назад
Yes but he still fought a war that was, contrary to what many Southerners will tell you, against abolishing slavery.
@henryjamesfenton
@henryjamesfenton 4 года назад
@@RaylaEclipse that is true, yes, and this is inexcusable. But Lee's reason for fighting on the side of the CSA was not necessarily because of a belief that slavery should not be abolished. 'Save in defence of my native state,' Lee said - after refusing command of the Union Army - he never again wanted to draw his sword. This sentiment is shown by the fact that he never referred to the Union forces as the enemy, only 'those people'. Whilst his supporting the CSA is demonstrable, and in of itself inexcusable, I dont believe he supported its core principles of slavery and secession - in contrast to many CSA commanders.
@AJ-yw7hf
@AJ-yw7hf 4 года назад
@@henryjamesfenton - In general, the point that others are making is that it wouldn't matter if General Lee didn't philosophically "support" slavery, because, after all, he fought on behalf of a slave economy & on behalf of the slave states that were in large part fighting to keep slavery AND to expand it in America. People can SAY they believe in this or that, & they can SAY they support or don't support this or that, but actions speak louder than words & actions *Matter* more.
@henryjamesfenton
@henryjamesfenton 4 года назад
@@AJ-yw7hf I cant disagree with this point. However, I believe that Lee's motives for fighting for the CSA were divorced from the motives of the CSA itself. This is demonstrated by his, as I said, opposition to cesession and his dislike of slavery. It's also shown through the fact that he never referred to the union as 'the enemy', only 'those people'. I agree with what you are saying, though, because a reasonable decision on Lee's part would have been to resign completely from military life, so as to avoid supporting a slave-owning organisation; but his strong connection with Virginia prevented that.

Henry F But he added that slavery was “a greater evil to the white man than to the black race” in the United States, and that the *“painful discipline they are undergoing, is necessary for their instruction.”* But years later, in 1866, one former slave at Arlington House, Wesley Norris, gave his testimony to the National Anti-Slavery Standard. *Mr. Norris said that he and others at Arlington were indeed told by Mr. Custis they would be freed upon his death, but that Lee had told them to stay for five more years.* So Mr. Norris said he, a sister and a cousin tried to escape in 1859, but were caught. “We were tied firmly to posts by a Mr. Gwin, our overseer, who was ordered by Gen. Lee to strip us to the waist and give us fifty lashes each, excepting my sister, who received but twenty,” he said. And when the overseer declined to wield the lash, a constable stepped up, Mr. Norris said. He added that Lee had told the constable to “lay it on well.” Dr. Foner said that after the war, Lee did not support rights for black citizens, such as the right to vote, and was largely silent about violence perpetrated by white supremacists during Reconstruction. To put it simply you’re wrong in every sense lol.

Actions speak louder than words. What does it matter if a murderer robbing a store says to his victims "I don't really want to kill you" but then goes ahead & kills them? I'm sure there were plenty of German soldiers helping Hitler invade other countries & helping him slaughter millions of people while thinking that they were 'only following orders' & it wasn't what they REALLY wanted to do. Nor can it be a case of confusion and he is actually the grandson of Robert E Lee Jr (who had no sons). In fact, I cannot figure who he can be, but I would like to know the claimed line of descent before dismissing him as a fantasist (in which case he would share something in common with a lot of people whose first name is Rev.)

We know that can't be true as one of his ancestors would have had to be a brother specifically of RE Lee or Charles Carter Lee. But we know who his father thru 4th great grandfather's were and not one of them had a connection with any of the Lee's of Virginia. The US Census, birth and death certificates, obituary's and genealogical records are all readily available to prove he is a fraud, using the Lee name to aid him in his message. He is welcome to whatever message he wishes to give but not to attach the heritage of another to further his narrative. That makes him a FRAUD.

I am not southern, I do not support slavery, I am not racist... But I don't see the issue with statues existing because stones do not offend me. Those statues are for the over 600k confederate soldiers who died, they were not built to offend people in 2018 where people are offended by everything. Catholic statues are every where and their bible has such quotes as "Slaves, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord."-- this doesn't imply catholics or christians support slavery and it's silly to get offended over. In 1918 we were worried about the flu pandemic...in 2018 we're worried about people being offended by things, as if that gives them certain rights.

Copied from a friend: Just as a personal point of reference, I have Union and Confederate ancestors and I am an Army Brat. I love history and I am a participant in many Civil War living history and memorial events. This post is shared from a friend. A friend of mine from Massachusetts recently asked on Facebook why so many conservatives are so supportive of the Confederate flag and monuments and why the South in general is still so attached to their Confederate heritage, even though they lost. My friend wasn't trying to be combative, but genuinely wanted to know. So here's my response as to why many Southerners still feel as they do. Discussion welcome. Feel free to share. ********* First, many Confederate History Lovers (for purposes of convenience, CHLs henceforth in this post) have spent far more time researching the Civil War and reading about the Southern people than most folks up North have. Most folks up North aren't terribly interested in the war. I know, I lived there for 10+ years and I didn't care much either when I lived there. But when you start researching and reading the "other side" and start reading original diary after original diary, including the post-war narratives, you gain an entirely different perspective. Second, the reason the North isn't as interested in the war is that the war didn't happen on their land, there are few historical sites to bring it to their remembrance, and it didn't affect them historically the way it affected the South. When the war was over, Northern homes and crops were still standing, their economy recovered, and they did not face 12 years of occupation by vicious politicians and a military force. I don't think most Northerners fully understand the impact of the war down here. In some areas of the South it has taken literally 100 years for the economy to recover to its pre-Civil War levels. Third, many CHLs are old enough to remember their grandparents talking about the war. They are old enough to remember the stories of destruction, looting, burning, and even raping. I know people today like this. They know exactly what happened to the family property, they know exactly how poor their grandparents were even several generations after the war because of the destruction, and they know the unspeakable things that happened in their own family at the hands of Northern soldiers. 150 years really isn't a very long time. I have personally met an elderly woman whose father was a Confederate soldier. Time shrinks when you look at it that way. To a Northern millennial, the Civil War was a big fight 150 years ago about slavery. To a 70-year-old Southerner, the Civil War was when Grandma's house was burned down, she lost everything, her father and brothers were killed, and (in some cases) she was raped by a Northern soldier. That's not an exaggeration for many families here. Fourth, along those lines, many Southern families have lived in the same area for generations. The rural South isn't as nomadic as many of the transient Northern cities. So they know exactly where their Civil War ancestor lived, died, and is buried. Many times his grave is in their own town or close by. So again, they still have personal connections to the war. Fifth, many CHLs know that roughly 65%-70% of the South did not own slaves. If you read the original writings, the average soldier was not fighting to preserve slavery. The politicians might have been, but the rank and file soldier was fighting to protect his homeland from an often merciless enemy. While there were many good men in the Union army, some Northern soldiers could be extremely brutal, ruthless, and cruel to civilians. Not all of them were, but many of them were. Southerners appreciate the Confederate soldier because he was fighting to drive out an invading force. Sixth, many Southerners are steeped in the traditions and beliefs of the founders and do not (and did not) believe that secession was treason. If secession was treason, then so was the colonial secession of 1776. It grieves me that many Southern states seceded over slavery, but I absolutely believe they had the right to do so. The very Declaration of Independence spells out that when a people decide the government is no longer meeting their needs, they have the right to dissolve it and create a new one. We can disagree over the reasons and rationale for Southern secession (although a look at the various state ordinances of secession is enlightening--there are many other reasons listed for their secessions beside slavery) but that doesn't mean that they were irrevocably bound by natural law to remain in the Union forever. Seventh, Southerners love an underdog and always have. 😀 Eighth, CHLs are becoming more and more attached to their heritage and the symbols of it because the extremists on the left are working harder and harder to take it away. If the extreme left had more savvy, they'd shut up and let it all fade from people's memory and eventually there might rise up a Southern generation who doesn't care about the monuments and flag anymore. Instead, they have a systematic fight going to erase history and sanitize it and reinterpret it. My master's degree is in Civil War history and I got so SICK of so many pompous Civil War historians prattling patronizingly about "lost cause mythology" without ever once giving the Southern voice an objective ear. Ninth, you gotta hand it to the South that Lee and Jackson were incredible, principled, God-fearing men. You get a few guys like that in the history of your cause and they quickly become larger than life heroes who live on well past a war. Tenth, Reconstruction bred more bitterness in the South than the war. You oughtta read up on it sometime from a Southern perspective. For twelve years, Northern politicians enjoyed grinding an already broken and impoverished people into fine dust. Southerners have long memories. Eleventh, a lot of Southerners have Scottish or Irish roots. The Scots-Irish culture is very big into memorializing the past, reverencing heroes, and being attuned to its heritage. Twelfth, the fact that the Confederacy lost is irrelevant to the people who honor their Confederate heritage. And that's as it should be--one should honor people because of what they do or stand for, not whether or not they triumphed. If the Allies had lost in WWII, I'd still honor my WWII Allied heritage. So hopefully that addresses your confusion about why people care even though they lost. 😀 There, that's a quick overview. I love the monuments and respect the Confederate flag because I respect the Southern soldier for fighting in defense of his native land. I know the names of my Confederate ancestors and have photographs of some of them. To my knowledge, none of them owned slaves. I have records of their military service. I've walked onto battlefields and thought, "My own great-great-great uncle died here." I understand the complicated factors surrounding the war and realize that saying "it was only about slavery" is factually wrong and grossly oversimplified. I oppose attempts to rewrite history and therefore support the monuments and flag, because it tells a side of the story that the Northern victors began suppressing in the 1860s and that many liberals are continuing to suppress today.

Please take this into sincere consideration. I have to say, I'd be surprised if you got your Civil War degree anywhere outside of the south. I wasn't going to bother reading past where you said this: that when the war was over, the North "did not face 12 years of occupation by vicious politicians & a military force." But I did read the rest just to confirm what I *Knew* would be *Absent* from what you wrote. I *Knew* you'd show *No* compassion or any interest at *All* in what generations of tormented, brutalized & enslaved black humans endured for *Centuries* & that you would show *No* happiness that they were set free. I was right. You spoke not one word on behalf of THOSE poor souls. I don't like to think of ANYone suffering, but 12 years of suffering after the war? There were *Centuries* of black Americans suffering the vicious evil of slavery before that, but all you talk about is what *White* southern ancestors had to face because of the Civil War, what the "impact" was on *Them* & what it took for *Them* to "recover." You show *No* interest in what it has taken black people to recover from what was done to them & to their family structures by slavery. About one out of four white southerners owned black humans as slaves, & most of the rest went along with it. If there were some southern soldiers in the Civil War who didn't think of themselves as fighting to keep a slave economy, most of those were fighting to keep a slave economy without knowing it, which would be sad, but that doesn't change the fact that's what the confederacy *Was* fighting to preserve - a society built on a slavery system. You show an interest only in the "destruction, looting, burning, & even raping" of people if they were *White* - with no apparent interest in the *Centuries* of "destruction, looting, burning, & even raping" of black Americans perpetrated by southern Society's kidnap & enslavement System before that. You speak about southern white people who still talk about what happened to *Their* family "property" - not about HUMANS who were turned INTO Property by white southern society to be bought & sold. You speak of the "poverty" of Only white people due to the war - not of the absolute poverty that those white people's system Forced on Generations of black Americans which still has a ripple effect today. You speak only of the "unspeakable things" that happened to *White* people as if the entire system of slavery in white society didn't allow "unspeakable things" to be done to black Americans for *Centuries* Before the Civil War. It is *Absolutely* Not okay if *Any* Northern soldier was ever brutal or cruel, but the Brutality & Cruelty towards black Americans started *Centuries* earlier when white people started purchasing black humans to allow them to be enslaved, raped, castrated, brutalized, bought, sold, & whipped like animals, have their children stolen, & to perpetrate the unjust theft of the wages that black people deserved for their labor. You speak only of *White* people who "lost everything" etc. as if black people hadn't *already* lost everything for centuries at the hands of white southern society: black people in America had lost their freedom, their families, their wages, their personhood, their dignity, their virginity, their own children & even their lives for Centuries because of white southerners buying them or going along w/ a society that sold them. It's true that the Civil War wasn't Only about slavery, but what the south fought Mostly about was to preserve & be in control of a slave economy & to expand the number of slave states. Regarding the Civil War, you talk about how government is supposed to meet people's needs & you either don't even see or don't even care that all you mean is the *White* people's "needs" at the Civil War time. Do you even hear yourself? The reason you & a lot of white southerners don't see clearly on this subject is the "traditions & beliefs" you've been "steeped" in, as you said in your own words. And if Lee & Jackson are your idea of God-fearing men, then as a lady who is a serious follower of Jesus myself, all I can say is that they might've considered themselves God-fearing but what they weren't was Jesus-focused. Where was Jesus's commandment to 'Love *others* as yourself'? What I see from them is loving those who look Like themSELVES or were related To ThemSELVES. I could go on further, but suffice it to say that whether you realize it or not, when you said "southerners love an underdog," the only thing your writing indicates that that means regarding the Civil War is that White southerners love an underdog if they're *White* & especially if they're white & *related* to themselves (such as their own ancestors). The REAL underdog before, during, & largely after the Civil War has been *Black* Americans. As I said, please take this into sincere consideration.

@@tlo42058 Tina, I didn't know you had replied to my comment. I just came back here to say that I appreciated you typing out what you typed above & that I hope you didn't misunderstand my attitude towards you yourself. If you're related to General Lee, then I understand you wanting to share some things that most people wouldn't know regarding some southerners during the Civil War. I also have southern heritage that goes way back. I'm also part minority & part Scots-Irish. I have Loved American history for decades - since I was still a kid. etc. But your reply to my comment doesn't take into account things you said which I was replying to. You absolutely were not only defending your own particular ancestors above here. You were also defending the Confederacy in general. So if you're not just defending your particular ancestors but you're defending the Confederacy too, then you're absolutely defending the Confederacy's goal of perpetuating a slave system. You can't have it both ways. You could choose instead to defend your particular ancestors & not defend the Confederacy in general. From the bottom of my heart, Tina, as a follower of Jesus, I want to tell you that if we defend someone else's sin, we make ourselves guilty of it. That's serious business. The slave system in the south contained evil sin. Some white people who went along w/ that system weren't enlightened or were unaware of the evils of the system, but c'mon. There were abolitionists putting their lives on the line to fight slavery because they discerned rightly & saw clearly how wrong it was, so what was the excuse of most of the people who went along w/ slavery & profited off of it? You said a few good or important things, but you also said things like "We can disagree over the reasons and rationale for Southern secession," when actually, No, we can't. It doesn't matter what you or I or anyone else in our time Says the reasons for secession were. All that matters is what the actual records from the time of secession *Say.* I mean what the southern states' leaders & legislators *Said* their reasons were - and perpetuating a slave economy & white supremacy *Absolutely* was a huge, integral part of it. We cannot disagree on that. If you have African American ancestors you have a funny way of absolutely 100% disappearing them & all the *Other* blacks & Native Americans from your account of things that matter regarding southern Civil War history - I mean in your long explanation above. Why do that? As far as bringing up color, I read everything you said about "why the South in general is still so attached to their Confederate heritage" & *You* specifically said that *That* was *Who* & *What* your response was *About* - "the south in general" that's "so attached to their Confederate heritage." Well *Who* exactly do you think that is? That "south in general" who is "so attached" to Confederate heritage is no doubt 99% white people, including some who identify as white or part white, so it was almost entirely white southerners that *You* indicated you were talking about. You didn't *have* to mention race. It was implicit in what you said there. Anyways, no hard feelings & all I can hope is that you'll consider some of the things I said here. Truly.

America's history is intertwined with slavery, just because Lee fought for slavery rather than just owning slaves as many other 'great' american figures did, his extraordinary military and tactical abilities is what the monument is in memory of, not him being a slave owner, same as the likes of Jefferson and Washington. i find it hypocritical for people to want to tear down these statues, if you were going to tear them down then tear down the ones of Jefferson and Washington as well. history is history and by getting rid of the statues it stops us remembering to learn from our mistakes, history isnt PC so if you go and remove important monuments due to a trend i think you are an idiot, you don't see us in Britain tearing down monuments to empire.

Lee had nothing to do with that movement and should not be related to it. He was just a man who fought for what he thought was right for his state and that's all he ever will be. I'm a descendent of black slaves and I say tear the monuments down. I'm not a so called black separatist. I'm also hard working and proud to be an American. I do still carry the name of my family's slave owner but I'm also a descent of that slave owner. I could never stand for what the confederacy did or what it represented. The confederates were treacherous towards their country and they lead an insurrection that killed more American people than any other war has before or since . The confederacy's legacy is that of human rights abuse. It took another 90 years after the end of slavery for this nation to finally acknowledge the rights of black people. You can say the Civil War wasn't about slavery but that would be an inaccurate depiction. Had they freed the slaves and paid them then maybe the former slaves would have been willing to help out in the war. You don't see Germans taking pride in their Nazi heritage because they know that era was a low point for their country and they own that. People in the US should do the same. Own your history for what it is, not for a fantasy of what you want it to be.

@@incubus_the_manThere’s no comparison with Germans verses the Confederacy . Germans killed numbers of Jewish people by shooting them and burning them in ovens. The rich plantation owners own slaves . The poor southerners were as poor as the slaves but fought for the South because that was the way they were back then. They were taught to defend their country. Blacks and the North own slaves from the very beginning of this country. People are always pointing fingers at others . Other countries owned slaves too. That’s the way it was . They didn’t have tractors and machinery . They used poor people to make people rich. There’s cemeteries all over the North that had slaves . New York ,Philadelphia and New Jersey. I’m not saying slavery was right but it must have been back then. You can not change the past but you can change the future and I believe America is making those changes.

@@73beetle19 just because slavery "was the way of life back then" doesn't mean it was ok or right. If Germany won the war, Germans would have said the same thing. Have you ever looked at the diagrams of slave ships. They packed slaves in the ships like sardines and barely kept them alive. The journey took nearly 3 months. Many died and the sick were routinely dumped off deck to prevent illness from spreading. They were then worked till they died. And this went on for 600 years. The first slaves arrived in America back in 1619, long before America even existed as a nation. There were white indentures but were always freed and able to live normal lives. Many black slaves were born into slavery and died under it. Not to mention the rape of slave women and violent brutality that happened to slaves for trying to escape or disobeying orders. What happened to the Jews in Nazi Germany was horrific and many people were worked to death in the same way that black slaves were. They were also beaten and tortured in much the same way and of course they were slaughtered like animals. With that said, the Holocaust took place within a 10 year time span. Africans were enslaved in America for over 300 years. According to PBS"Between 1525 and 1866, in the entire history of the slave trade to the New World, according to the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database, 12.5 million Africans were shipped to the New World. 10.7 million survived the dreaded Middle Passage, disembarking in North America, the Caribbean and South America". The estimates for Jewish deaths during the Holocaust is around 6 million. Also it didn't end with slavery. Jim Crow, The Klan and lynchings followed suit after slavery because southerners held spite against black people after losing the war and seeing the Southern economy fall. I know that you've been taught to take pride in your heritage but you need to look at the big picture to see what really happened. The "Lost Cause" rhetoric is the South being in denial.

The issue with Lee is different from Washington and Jefferson as despicable as their slave ownership was. Lee was against the great nation of the USA. He SHOULD NOT BE FEATURED IN FEDERAL BUILDINGS AND STATE PARKS. You can wave a confederate flag in your house and private properties can feature confederate statues but federal and state properties of this great nation should not feature rebels and traitors.

I always felt as they should be grandfathered. The statues were put there before most of us were born. There’s a big problem with your suggestion. Every statue that’s been taken down never make it to a museum , battlefields or cemeteries. It would make both sides happy if they would say this statue is being moved to another location but they don’t. I think it’s our government that’s trying to divide us and making us fight against each other. Divide and concur .

To this guy I would say, you are judging people on our time standards. In that time both North and South really did not want to fight for or against slavery. Also, would you want to fight against your neighbors or family? Looking across a battlefield and knowing your kin and friends were on the other side? Also, once the war was over, Lee tried his best to unite the two sides. He only had five years or so. I am suggesting we remember that he made a mistake for 4 years, look at the 35 years he served the USA honorably. Also look at what he did after the war. That said, to erase history is to repeat it. This history really does not need repeating

But Tina, most people don't know all their relatives that descended from relatives who lived in the 1800s. People also used to have more children than they do in America now. If one person in the 1800s had 10 kids & each of those kids had 10 kids, that's already 100 1st cousins. If each of those 100 1st cousins had 10 kids, those would be an Additional 1,000 2nd cousins (or 1,000 cousins once removed) already by the 3rd generation. I'm not saying General Lee had that many descendants, but most people don't know even most of their 2nd cousins, much less further removed than that.

He should be proud of his ancestor, everyone else is saying to tear it down because they don't like the fact he owned slaves. Most american's don't like the idea of a monarchy because they had the revolution and celebrate that as a good thing even though having the revolution meant that they were more cruel to the native populations and persisted to have slavery hundreds of years after the empire abolished it all because they weren't under the control of the crown anymore. American's love the revolution that meant they could continue to have slaves But hate the confederacy who wanted to continue to have slaves... Stop letting media manipulate you, the history past was not a history filled with men of virtue versus men of malice, they were all just business men striking out on their own at the cost of anyone who got in the way. One day, people will want to tear down statues of Lincoln because he didn't mind slavery and was willing to let it happen if he could win without the propaganda. www.minnpost.com/eric-black-ink/2013/05/facing-facts-about-lincoln-and-his-views-slavery/ One day people will delete any history of Einstein because he beat his wife. One day people children will say they have no parents because they didn't like how daddy told them off for doing something wrong that one time...
