Ken Curtis (Festus) died in 1991 heart attack while he slept. 74 years old. His body was cremated and his ashes spread across the Colorado flat lands. I remember him most for being in the singing group "Sons Of The Pioneers". My Momma loved that group. He had a beautiful voice. If you don't remember them, look them up. You would enjoy their music. Matt is going to have to get a red plaid lumberjack shirt and a blue bull named Babe if he cuts all those logs. (LOL) God bless you and yours!

Forest bathing is a new one on me! I'm like you, Tipper. The first thing that came to my mind was going to the creek and taking a bath, which I used to do. My dad, being an outdoorsman, I was raised in the woods. I'm blessed to have a husband that way, too. We've got a home in the country that's mostly wooded that's got some beautiful places that I too like to go and clear my mind , pray and enjoy the beauty of God's creation. I feel close to Him there. Still praying for Granny and that God will give her doctors wisdom in treating her. 🙏

I loved your chatting about the serenity you find up in the woods. I am also a fan of nature and of mountains. Many people say they find peace at the beach; I am truly at peace in the presence of mountains. They make make me and any problem I have seem miniscule by comparison and help to keep me humble. One of my favorite Bible verses is Psalm 121: 1 I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, From whence cometh my help. I wish I lived closer to the part of the Appalachian range that passes through Massachusetts. Mountains will figure into my plans to relocate after I retire. God bless you for the gratitude you have for being in your part of the world.

I have never heard of forest bathing either. We had acreage up north, loved it. Our daughter since birth was going up with us, she was taught at a very young age everything you can thinking’ about the woods. We then moved East of Michigan to a small town called East China, MI on ten acres. It was a double blessing for us. But Rebecca our daughter is now teaching her daughters 1 and 5 years old the goodness of the outdoorsy part of the woods. Very blessed, and so are you all ❤️🙏❤️

When spoke if how you learned the term "forest bathing " reminded me of the day I asked our second grandson, who is 13 now and has highly functioning autism, why he chooses to go to our woods to work with grandpa instead of going or doing something else. He kinda shocked me when he said that it puts him at peace😊 It always makes me feel that too and he made me so happy to know that he felt the same way! He learned how to use the weed eater for the first time this summer and has proven that it is his tool of choice this summer. Grandpa turned him loose with it and he did a fantastic job cleaning up the undergrowth of our woods❤ ❤

So I had to Google it, and forest bathing started in Japan about 50 years ago. The Japanese take all aspects of health and well being very seriously, and what they mean by forest bathing is being out amongst trees, observing the nature around you while breathing deeply. You are very lucky that you can just walk out your door and find peaceful woods! I'm a city girl, and a creature of convenience so I love having many things close by, but I find such peace watching your videos with you and Matt sitting outside and chatting. One of my favorite videos of yours is when you all are walking alongside a creek, just the sounds bring me peace. Thank you for sharing!

I suppose there is a difference between people who say woods and forest. I used to sit for hours with my dog sleeping against my leg in the woods soothing my soul. Once a little wood thrush sang a quiet song while it dug in the leaves next to me. Pure magic..

My husband, while in the Navy, taught Land Survival Training, from 1991 to 1994. They had live animals on display. There were squirrels, raccoon, deer, ducks, snapping, and regular turtles, a fox and lots of snakes and an alligator. There was a green house and outdoor plants and many shelter examples done from logs and Parachutes. The idea of this training was to give the aircrew and a chance at survival after a crash till they could be rescued. There was 1day of in class training. The next 3 days and 2 nights were in the woods of North Florida. You would be surprised how many people have never been in the woods or seen animals we would consider everyday experiences. We didn't grow up in the country. But there were plenty of wooded areas or state parks near us.

I'm so scared of snakes we killed a big Copperhead in our yard about a week ago. they are very dangerous and aggressive my husband's aunt got bite about a month ago on the hand weeding her flower bed she ended up having to be flown out and spent two weeks or more in hospital. Her hand and arm swelled so bad it turned black all the way up to shoulder. The Dr. Was worried she was going to lose her arm but thank God she didn't she sure had a rough time.

Hearing Matt say the splitter has split it's last log, reminded me, several years ago my brother had been mowing with the riding mower. After a few hours he went in the house for some ice water. After taking a good break, he went back to go get some more mowing done. And his mower wouldn't start. He walked back in the house and calmly got his pistol. His wife and youngest son started asking what ya doing, he didn't say anything. He stepped out on the back porch and filled the mower full of holes LOL He's a nut 😝😜🤪

My favorite saying from Festus Haggin' was when Festus was talking to a bad Guy. Festus would say "Don't you make one wrong move Mr. or yule be as dade as last years bird's nest." I will remember that for the rest of my Life, it always brings a smile to me. When I was younger I would take green horns into the deep woods of West Virginia and one of the Guys would call the experience "Wilderness saturation experience." He was called a "Hippy " back then and He loved the Wilderness. Thanx for sharing Tipper, God bless. 😃

There is nothing better than being in familiar woods. Somehow after you sit in your forest you find tons of new things... and that makes it more your forest. It is so funny how the people of today act like they just discovered something new by sitting in the woods. I was like you Tipper, and I bet a few of your trees have taken the brunt of being mad at something like mine have. My favorite saying when my daughter was mad at one of her friends or something or me...I would tell her to just go kick a tree! She always came back in a better mood after roaming thru the woods. I know I do too. Shaking my head---forest bathing...lol We just called it getting back to nature or gonna go have a talk with God. Praying for Granny...

Forest Bathing is a Japanese concept called "Shinrin-yoku." It's all about communing with the forests in a natural way - sights, sounds, feelings, and breathing. The trees will communicate with us if we'll take the time to slow down and listen. I like to practice Shinrin-Yoku here in Northern Kentucky. It soothes the soul and reminds us that we are a part of Nature and that all things are connected. BTW, my family are Western North Carolina transplants to Northern Kentucky. They're from Tuckasegee, NC. We love your RU-vid channel and celebrate Appalachia in our hearts.. I suspension thar ain't no tother way... 🙂

"Forest Bathing" made me chuckle the same way Matt did. I've been trompin' around in the woods since I was a kid. Even now, as an adult, there's nowhere I feel more at peace. My favorite place to be is on a hike with my dogs. I've even been considering whether or not I could do the Appalachian Trail, how I would do it, how much of it I think I could handle. I need a good bit of solitude to stay balanced, and there's no better place than in the woods! ❤

Mom and Dad used to take us for walks in the Woods when we were younger. I remember times when I was the last in line behind my Older Brothers and having a bush or a whip of foliage smacking me in the face....on purpose. I took it for awhile and learned how to avoid it. 😅 We saw so many beautiful and interesting places and plants. One of the prettiest was Jack-in-the-pulpit. Later on; Dad took us walking and Story telling on a Sunday afternoon so Mom could have a Break. Our Dog usually went with us Too! Both my Brothers became Boy Scouts and Dad eventually became a Leader. I often heard how cool my Dad was from some of my Classmates that were in his Troop 140. I was a Brownie and a Girl Scout. Loved our Field Trips and Camping 🏕️. Learned to make our own little Stoves from institutional size cans of beans etc .. Fixed ourselves Supper many a time. Those Are Good Memories. 🙏❤️ I'm also a True Horse 🐎 Crazy girl; according to my Parents. 😂 I was fortunate to Ride and Groom and muck out stalls, clean the saddles and bridles and feed the Horses. I wouldn't trade those Times for a Sack of Gold. I still love Horses and watch a couple of Channels on YT . AND Ifind comfort in watching and listening to You and your Girls have the Best Conversations. I'm rambling on and on.... As a little Girl; I loved to sit 🪑 and listen to the Stories of my Elders. Now, im becoming one of those Elders. I let my Grandchildren in on a few of my experiences and They Tell me about their Experiences. It Brings Us Closer. We moved to the Missouri Ozarks a couple years ago. "Forest bathing," or whatever you want to call it, was something that is a LOT easier to do here than where we used to live. The hills and hollers around us are always available. We live in a little town of about 1300 people, surrounded by hills and woods. Yeah, this is where I was meant to live the last years of my life (I'm 74, and love where we are).

Its hard to believe that gardening time is over. I have really enjoyed watching you & Matt in the garden & then having popsicle chats. I miss my hubby being home so much. He was in the hospital in August & again for 9 days this month. He has really suffered since his injury last Nov 1st. He's been in the hospital or a rehab facility for almost a year now. I just had 2 strong spinal epidurals on 18th to see if this 3rd set will help my spine. I'm so tired of having to wear that aggravating brace & continually needing my walker. I pray Granny is doing well. I've dealt with cancer myself and its not easy. Thankfully, mine was caught early. Pray Granny will experience complete healing!! She's a precious lady. People from Missouri talk like that too. Not so much as when I was younger. My husband and I love all the old westerners. I never watch regular TV. When I lived in the country I loved going to the pond or out on a trail and just lay down and soak it all in the sun, the air and the sounds. When or girls were small i would pack up the truck with sleeping bags, cooler and snacks and drive out to the pasture and sleep out there. We did have a dog that watched over us. The girls and I loved it, felt peace and comfort. Tipper you sound like you don't feel good 😢 Take care. ❤🙏

" I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help." I've lived my whole life down in the flatlands, but as young as I can remember, going up to the mountains has felt like coming home. In my teens and young adulthood, if I went for longer than a month without getting into the forest, I felt like a dry sponge. When I was older and had more family responsibilities, I couldn't get there as often, but I still went 4 or 5 times a year. It was like a hunger in my soul. Standing in a grove of tall trees is more spiritual than any cathedral to me. Since I've been housebound, I haven't been able to go, but I can close my eyes and smell the pine and cedar scented air, hear the wind come soughing down the from the peaks through the trees, and I'm there in my imagination. The way Matt reacted to "forest bathing" is about my reaction when I heard about "earthing." Turns out that means standing or walking barefoot on dirt, which is supposed to have miraculous healing properties. For the first half of my life, I seldom wore shoes unless it was required by law. My sisters were the same way. Our mother despaired of us. 😄 If my grandmother fussed about our wearing white shoes after Labor Day, my mother would say it was all she could do to get us to wear any shoes (which was true).

It certainly worked of minor injuries, splinters, cuts, etc. There is one brand we can still buy at the Menonite store near us. It is like a miracle product. It smells bad but works for nearly every injury you had. Matt reminds me of my husband who has been gone for over ten years. We always split and sold wood. Also loaded and delivered it. Those were pleasant day whether frigid or hot. We spent a lot of time together, just the two of us. Enough for today. Thanks for the memories. Love your channel and your family. Have a good day.

I share Matt's thoughts on Forest Bathing. I heard it, coincidentally, the first time last night reading the info of a PBS travel show where he went to Oregon. Once again, our culture has pushed out what God has given us in the name of progress and how we know better how to live with synthetic chemicals and concrete. Now, some are waking up to it and seems like a no-brainer to us. I see how many young families are homesteading and homeschooling and I think that it is good. Hopefully it sticks because it is hard work. I love Chester, he was so whiny. Lol. Have a great week! ❤❤

Watching this while I drink my coffee. So very glad I have found your site. I am a fan of National Storytelling in Jonesboro,Tn. We have attended festivals there yearly about 30 times. We were friends and supporters of Ray and Rosa Hicks and visited them there in their mountain top home yearly. I fell in love with all of Appalachia. I visited Waynesville as Donald Davis was raised in that area. I have never been to your lil area but hope to drive through there as far west in NC and on west and south. I also plan on going to Prestonburg Ky and seeing where you received your award. You amaze me and I find so much peace in your posts. God bless

Lows in the 40sand 50s sounds so good! It’s getting down to the mid 60s here in east metro Atlanta area. I am ready for cooler weather! The sound of Matt’s chainsaw in the background brung back fond memories of my daddy and brothers cutting up firewood in preparation for the foretold cold months. To paraphrase Barbra Mandrel, we were forest bathing, when forest bathing wasn’t cool 😂 Wonderful video, as always ❤

I enjoyed the visit again. We finally got a nice rain last week so things are starting to green up again a little. Tomatoes and beans are all that's left in the garden. We've had cool mornings lately but warm temps in mid day. I admired your glider so we bought one on clearance a few weeks ago. Couldn't help but notice the squawk in yours in this video. Ours was doing the same thing, and apparently we had tightened one of the nuts too much. Discovered which one it was and loosened it and that did away with the squawk. Like you, I get away for a while and take a walk on the prairie meadows to enjoy the nature around me, although I would surely enjoy a walk along a clear flowing stream in the mountains. Still praying for Granny and you all.

My husband calls me "Chester" sometimes because when I get up out of my recliner the first few steps that I take I limp. I've got a bad back, and if I sit to long I get stove up. Or stiff as most people would say.

Armadillos dig up our landscaping looking for grubs. We hunt them in the dark to keep them from tearing up our yard and landscape. They also try to dig under our front porch, too.

Wow! It's amazing that you're still getting such big beans out of your garden. I'm excited to hear what they taste like. Please tell Granny we are continuing to pray for her. When i had breast cancer/chemo and radiation, they gave me some good medicine (pills) for nausea that really worked quickly for me. I think the main reason I didn't get too bad sick from the treatments was all the people praying for me. I know that Granny certainly has thousands of folks praying for her! So much love to you all. Thank you for sharing your lives with us. Forest bathing is a new term for me. I thought it was going to be literally bathing/showering outside. (There are lots of homes at the beach that have outside showers and I thought that was cool.) ❤🙏Jane in SC

Y’all remind me of my mom and my daddy, they always had a huge garden. They never made us children work in the garden because my mama was born in 1923 my father was born in 1918 a mother grew up in hogback Mountain North Carolina. She had to work so hard in the gardens growing up that she never made us but now I wish she sort of did because we don’t know what to do and I sure do miss her. mother told me that she had to work in the garden just like a grown man she said, soon as she could walk. She had to help her daddy. She was the oldest, she’ll take care of all the children, and more she had to get up at night to take care of the kids she was a step child of the other children, so she wasn’t treated as well, she had such a hard life she didn’t want us to be raised like. her. she wanted us to be a child and play . she never did get to play. That’s so sad to me..

I’m so happy that someone is getting consistent cooler temps. Our weather here in north Louisiana is still in the low 90’s. A few upper 80’s thrown in. A rain event or two. We’ve had a very dry summer. We’re still in a burn ban. Enjoy the nice fall weather. I also like Gunsmoke and Andy Griffith. Seeing y’all made me think of Granny. I’m happy you mentioned her. You talking about her starting treatment almost made me cry bc I don’t want any of my loved ones to go through that. I watched my poor Mama go through this. I couldn’t stand it. We stood by her bed so many times when she was so so sick. It tore my heart out as a young lady. I was 11 through 13 yrs old during her treatment years. She got down to 99 pounds. I knew any day she could die. She was younger though at 55. She had a Will to live and she had asked God to let her live and see her girls grow up. Im saying all this so you so you will know that there are people who have done this too and we and we are with y’all. Praying for you and the family bc we love y’all. Granny is special to me.

I guess "forest-bathing" would be similar to sunbathing at the beach with the sound and smells of the ocean...I get the same feeling at the beach as I do in the mountains...just peace, calm, stillness, introspection. I get that feeling too when I'm walking along our lanes surrounded by tens of thousands of acres of grassland and can see mountain ranges all around in the distance.
