TEC Bike Parts suspension for the Triumph Speed Twin // The One Where He Drops His Motorcycle

I've said from the very beginning that the stock suspension on the Triumph Speed Twin is perfectly adequate, and 6,000 miles later that has not changed. However, just because it's perfectly adequate, that doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement. While I don't necessarily need to spend big money on a premium suspension setup that will deliver a level of performance I'll never use, I did become interested in getting a cheap front & rear setup that would deliver the kind of small improvement I was looking for. Does the Tec Bike Parts suspension fit the bill? Maybe, if I can keep from destroying my bike during the installation process...

If I get a Speed Twin, some of these Tec Bike parts products are also on my radar, so I'm looking forward to hear more about your thoughts on the suspension upgrades as you get more miles on it. I think the shocks look better, if anything LOL since they are all black and have the remote reservoirs. Keep us posted on what you think of this stuff over time, and if it's worth the relatively affordable price tag. That Ohlins stuff is probably way more than most of us mortals need for street use.

Great vid. I can relate to the odd instal cock up! Having got loads of Tec parts for my T100 and in the main they’ve been excellent decat pipe, front suspension upgrade and new cam all brilliant. But the rear suspension was poor, keep them on for 500mls got no better, put Hagons on in the end, bliss! Much more controlled and progressive.

I just upgraded my rear shocks on my T120 to the Tec shocks and was baffled by how different the bike felt, it really brought it to life, night and day. I didn’t think I minded the stock suspension until I ran it with the Tec shocks, I just ordered the progressive springs for the front.

Don't beat yourself up too badly. I spun out on a fresh rear tire, (I know better. That's what makes it worse, I have been riding since 1992 and I KNOW BETTER), and rolled around on the ground like an old person while watching my Speed Twin pirouette on it's right engine case cover. These really are special bikes. Thanks for the good content, I am a firm believer in spending money on brakes, suspension and tires and am very interested in all of those things to make my bike better. It is a Bonneville but a damn good one. Great street bike.

I had a set of “Dunstall” rear shocks on my 2016 T-120. I suspect they were out of the same factory as the TEC piggbacks as they’re visually identical.They went well for a while but flogged out after a few months with lots of side wobble on the shafts. Nothing much wrong with the stock gear but it just didn’t quite cut it two-up on B-roads. I finally got Bitubo fork cartridges and piggyback rears from Italy for the same dough as a pair of Ohlins. These are a big step up. Having said that, I’ve got TEC progressive fork springs on my 1982 T-140 Bonneville and they’re a big improvement once you play a bit with oil spec and quantity. I’d like to get a Speed Twin if only for the motor, but I’ve got too much good gear on my Bonnie to quit it yet. Great video!👍🏻

I love showroom shinny motorcycles in showrooms. On the street, every mark you give a motorcycle, makes it distinct... it is like the scars that life inflicts into you, and make you who you are. Poetic today. Great video once again. I really like your editing skills, as you tell a story, not just piece stuff together to fill the time. About learning stuff... I did a seat for my motorcycle, created a front fender, and replaced my odometer with a in-headlight where I did the enclosure, and did the wiring based on the existing OEM connector, so I did not have to cut anything. I replaced my bars with clip-ons, and my footpegs with rear sets. I Still don't know how to check the chain slack. It is a constantly learning process :) ... Also, now that you have the service manual, do please check the torque specs on each bolt, and use the torque wrench for the specified purpose... fastening the bolts to the proper tension might make or break your riding experience. I remember once I replaced the stock handlebar with a lower and wider one and did the "medium grunt" approach... the first time I had to hard brake (20 minutes into riding) the handlebar rolled on it's fasteners... you see "medium grunt" is different for you and me :D much unlike torque scientific units.

I learn the hard way. It sucks when stuff like that happens, but you were right to not let it wreck your day... Suspensions are different for everybody. Different bodies, different riding styles, all that stuff. I will wager if you ride a bike with a high end suspension, set for you? It'll make you smile. Having said that? Enjoying a bike in whatever form it is currently? FUN! Riding is supposed to be fun. Seems like you're having fun, so you're doing it right!

Well you finally took the protective film sticker off your Triumph logo. I guess it was good that you waited. I like the TEC bike parts paddock bobbins for my Street Twin, expensive, but very nice and functional. I use that with the Harbor Freight aluminum paddock stand. Makes the bike very stable to work on. That said I almost dropped my bike the second time coming off the paddock stand. Seems simple enough but there was a learning curve.

I just did this job on my SS 900 couple weeks ago. I also procrastinated because front forks are something I've never had apart before. It was so easy. Watched Delboy video. Simple job. I didn't need to loosen pinch bolts though he did in the video I watched. No effect at all on this job. Brake Torque felt right to me. I put some crepe masking tape over the large nuts at top of fork to protect them from mar from the socket. Worked good, but clean them really good first so the tape will stick. As a trained mechanic, you NEVER use a torque wrench as a lever bar. It is a calibrated measuring tool, not a flex handle. Make sure you return it to zero every time before you put it away. Word.

Tec parts do what it says on the tin at a reasonable price, need to do front and back as changing the rear shock highlights a soft front. It worked wonders on the 865 Bonnie and I will be doing the same on the new Street Twin. Good video 👍

I did this on my 2012 Bonneville SE; both front and rear. The rear shocks seem like low grade/lightweight aluminum but I have had no problem with them. The front fork kit really made the bike more precise in the curves; I have preload at 3 of the 7 grooves, plenty of tension left. Highly recommend TEC and they have a U.S. warehouse!
@peteyoung9755
@peteyoung9755 3 года назад
In fairness it's not so much of a problem on the old Street Twin since the front brake is so useless it doesn't cause the front to dive. I put a 4-pot Brembo kit on mine, at which point it became obvious I needed to fix the front and rear shocks too. I went with Hagon, can't fault them for the price. It's a true retro bike, it's just like owning a Yamaha in the 1980s, having to change half the components because they're not up to the job!
@stevesteve1965
@stevesteve1965 3 года назад
I only have Ohlins on mine because I got them half price. However I would have bought something else to replace the stock items but nowhere near the price of 'ohlins' 'Nitron' ect. I would have been looking at Hagon, YSS or Tec.. I would recommend that you give your new springs at least a couple of months to settle down. And you are right, we just don't do the kind of riding that explores the true capabilities of these high cost shocks. Tec is more than adequate for our use. Good vid mate 👍

I have to agree about the Manuals…. I am almost to the point where I look to make sure there is a manual before I buy the bike. It’s that important. Mistakes, meh. We all make them. I dropped my Tiger 800 in my garage onto my wife’s Jeep - it was glorious and I am still embarrassed to this day. I think the TEC parts are probably exactly what you needed. I recently bought a 2014 Speedmaster (very similar bike) and am also looking at them. I don’t want or need Ohlins on this bike, but I do want something better than stock. In my case the stock is so bad that I hit a pothole yesterday and Siri called 911 thinking I had been in an accident (seriously). I bought the Speedmaster to make mistakes on. I have a Tiger 900 now, and I don’t plan to mess with it for a while. But I have found over the winter months that having a bike to wrench on makes the winter time pass better. Great video and attitude, thanks for sharing your learnings.

I dropped my Speed Twin about 3 months ago - confession is good for the soul!... I knew it was coming when I bought the bike 4 months prior, so had the engine protectors, dresser bars and front fork protectors (plus other extras) fitted before I picked it up... parking it, almost stationary, really not sure what happened it was so quick, and boom it's on its side... only thing is a small scuff on the V&A pipe... as for Tec, hmmmm, not sure, I've spent so much money on the bike I feel like I need to spend more and put quality on quality, it'll be a while, but I'm thinking K-Tech will be the way I go...
@VanBlamm

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it would be a good idea to put the washer between the spring and the spacer. The top washer should be purchased separately or ootional since the top is flat. The benefit is the 'cut' on the top of the spring will eat away the spacer as you have it. The washer would stop that wear. My 0.02 Good on you for picking up a manual and learning 👌
@VanBlamm
@VanBlamm 3 года назад
Damn, I spent a long time deciding where to put that washer. The instructions don't say, and there wasn't a washer in the original stack. You're probably right though. At least now I know I can actually get in there to change it.

I pick up my Speed Twin last week, and the next day I had to put it in my garage because of bad weather and I dropped it. A little scratch on the motor cover and on the end cap of the muffler. The brake lever is broken, but the mirror doesn't have any visible damage. All in all, it isn't that bad, I bought it to use. But yeah, it isn't necessary.. =/

I think if your happy with the results, it doesn't matter what others think. I'm looking at changing the suspension on one of my bikes and appreciate that ohlins, nitron, matris etc are considered the best but are we really using them to full potential on the road and, would we be just as happy, in everyday riding conditions, buying e.g. hagon suspension at half the price?

A really enjoyable video mate. I hope Tec bike parts take note and mention the need to loosen the clamp screw and fit the washer to protect the plastic spacer. I too dropped my bike (Royal Enfield 650 GT) at zero mph but the damage was just one Tec bar end mirror. I was going to get a pair of their bike lowering rear shocks but the chrome version won't be available again for months. After dropping the bike (mostly from having too short a pair of legs while waiting at a red light) I decided not to wait any longer and bought a 30mm shorter pair of Chinese shocks. The small change in front fork rake angle that created has actually improved the bike, making it less nervous, more relaxing to ride (but that is just my view, someone else might say less agile). It also helps being able to almost flat foot the bike at traffic lights no matter how the road surface slopes away.

One thing to note on Tec bike parts. I think I know why their stuff is priced so cheap. If you think about it, none of their parts are available through any 3rd party retailers, as far as I can tell. They sell entirely direct to the consumer. For whatever reason, that company has decided to only sell direct, and therefor their pricing seems very cheap compared to other brands. Other brands have decided to sell through other dealers and retailers, so they have to mark up their retail pricing to leave some margins in there for the middle man. Now, back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Love your videos. One really poor reason I might do the rear suspension is that you really can’t adjust the stock springs because the friggin’ pipes are in the way! Did you notice that when wanting to increase the preload for pillion riding? Or did I miss something? What a factory design flaw. BTW, my son and I are riding Badlands, Needles, Black Hills end of April, partly inspired by you!! Cheers!

I don't like that they use progressive springs. Linear is almost always better. Progressive tends to be too soft on top, and too stiff on the bottom... Most pro suspension shops will say to get a linear spring rated for your weight. Remember that the spring rate impacts your rebound and compression damping...

I’m the same with my iron 883. A lot of people hate on the seat and suspension. I’m 82lb and I feel it’s more then comfortable. Maybe the bigger rider it’s not great. I’m looking to upgrade to the speed twin as love the look of that bike.

I think if you're happy with the suspension, that's the important thing, despite what others may say. My best mate has the same bike as me but he has a full ohlins set up which transforms the bike and it's handing is light years better than mine. His suspension is the thick end of £2k though, which is serious money if you're on a tight budget, like me.

@VanBlamm
@VanBlamm Год назад
I intend to provide an update on this in a future video, but I can give you the short version here: save up for something nicer. The TEC parts aren't problematic by any means, but the improvement is so little. I thought that because I don't ride very fast I didn't need nice suspension, but riding some other bikes has shown me that nice suspension is helpful even when you're going slow-to-medium speed. Unless you're fast and big and the stock shocks are terrible for you and you only have a couple hundred bucks to spare, then I think it's worth going for the Nitron or Ohlins.
@ethereal_synapse
@ethereal_synapse Год назад
@@VanBlamm I am pretty content with the stock suspension but I hate how bad they are with a pillion. It feels very bouncy and bottoms out at some points, and I’m not a big guy at all. When you make a follow up video, would you be able to comment on the pillion/touring ability on the Tec shocks? Those two things are the only thing I’m looking to upgrade for, and am reluctant to spend 900 bucks on the triumph fox brand upgrades, even if they will be miles better than cheaper versions.

Great video, and yes you ARE an idiot, fancy dropping your bike. Seriously though, i`ve been contemplating fitting TEC progressive front springs and rear shocks, and having seen this, i think i will now do so. Like you, i will never get the real benefit of Ohlins, Ktec, Nitron etc, so the TEC stuff will be a better and more affordable option. They guys at TEC always say they`re NOT trying to compete with the top brands, but are offering an affordable impprovement. Hopefully, i`l be changing them later this year, ready to enjoy the lanes of Dorset.

What’s that magnetic tool used to remove the spring? Any updates on the suspension upgrades and how they have faired long term?
@VanBlamm
@VanBlamm 3 месяца назад
Just a generic telescoping magnet wand. Any hardware store should have them. The shocks were decent for a while but they started getting uncomfortable after about 10,000 miles of use. Nothing I did with the settings would get them to be as compliant as they had been stock. I eventually swapped back to the stock shocks for this reason, and also because the reservoir contacted my new Givi cargo rack under just a little bit of compression. The front fork springs continue to be fine but I still wish I could get my hands on the Thruxton fork brace that Triumph used to make.

Don't know why I would; the seat height is perfect for me as-is. That said, I've only ever scraped a peg once or twice before, so lowering it a tad probably wouldn't have any ill effect.

That's a tough question. To be honest, I'm not sure if I'd do it again. I thought that really nice suspension componentry was only beneficial when riding at a 10/10, but my recent experience with the Street Triple R taught me that a nice suspension is nice all the time. So yes, the TEC setup does offer an improvement commensurate with its price, but I no longer think something like a Nitron setup would be wasted on me.
