Cool... but a self-driving car is not about whether we can detect something is there or not tho... it's about understanding what you've detected... and that's machine learning. In order to solve that .99999999 problem, you need a lot of data. This supposedly to be in production in 2022, is buying data also part of the strategy? Is training the algorithm also part of the strategy? Is continuously collecting data and training and update the machine learning model part of the strategy? Don't get me wrong, this is still way better than those old LiDARs. But I assume this is still not a solid-state LiDAR, which means it has a higher wear & tear ratio since you know it spins around all the time. All I'm saying is that LiDAR is only a piece of the puzzle in solving self-driving car problems, and it's a relatively easy part comparing to the machine learning part.

I honestly don't get why people comparing here TSLA and Luminar - Elon Mask is great businessman, but everyone does mistakes. There's too much unnecessary efforts trying to detect 3D objects using cameras and computer vision + AI. The only real safe combination for real, fully autonomous vehicles (and not what tesla does now) is camera+lidar for different weather conditions and action scenes. Main complaint is the price, and Luminar seems to be having an edge product. Time will tell, but I would trust Thiel's gut than Musk's.

Ma man ! Luminar's lidar sensor costs in between $500 ~ $1000 USD. and the price certainly will go down when mass production begins. Luminar already has strong sponsors and will have a lot more co-ops that will support financially. This company is real. I mean look how confident he is. He is a genius.

I heard of a company named Microvision that may have a better lidar product that could also scale to the masses at a cheaper price point 🤷🏾‍♂️. Might be worth looking into...
