Meet Lorena, a “newbie” at Abbott who is thrilled to be part of the Abbott crew that runs 99,000 deep. You would be too if you’d worked as hard to reach a goal as she has. Now that she’s here, she’s on a mission to showcase this groundbreaking company … all while being awesome at her day job as a product expert in therapeutic nutrition. As part of her introduction to All Things Abbott, she’ll hear details about our life-changing tech straight from the experts involved in bringing them to be. Join her as she explores our health breakthroughs that are helping people live their best lives, every day. This is Tech Knowledge, an online video series about Abbott innovations. Settle in. It’s going to be a fun ride.
It’s hard to understand something you’ve never experienced. In this episode, Lorena comes to grips with diabetes, literally!
Stick your finger. Do it again, up to 10 times a day - and night, don’t forget. Log your results.
Now do that every day, for the rest of your life.
Or, with our FreeStyle Libre system, don’t do that. As #techgenius (BTW, how do we get that on our business cards?) Laura shows Lorena in a very clear (and slightly painful) demonstration.
Along with eliminating routine fingersticks for diabetes management, the FreeStyle Libre system tracks glucose levels with data available at moment’s notice simply by using a handheld reader to scan a sensor on the back of your upper your arm.
For people living with diabetes, monitoring their glucose levels has never been as hassle-free, discreet, convenient and informative as it is with the FreeStyle Libre system. It doesn’t just take away routine fingersticks*, it takes away the dread that often discourages regular testing. Better testing, better diabetes management, better health. We like “better.”
Sure, we’re just getting started with this technology with much more to come.
But we’re confident diabetes management will never be the same.
*A fingerstick test using a glucometer is required during times of rapidly changing glucose levels when interstitial fluid glucose levels may not accurately reflect blood glucose levels; or if hypoglycemia or impending hypoglycemia is reported by the system; or when symptoms do not match the system readings

*INDICATIONS AND IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
The FreeStyle Libre Flash Glucose Monitoring system is a continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) device indicated for replacing blood glucose testing and detecting trends and tracking patterns aiding in the detection of episodes of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia, facilitating both acute and long-term therapy adjustments in persons (age 18 and older) with diabetes. The system is intended for single patient use and requires a prescription.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Remove the sensor before MRI, CT scan, X-ray, or diathermy treatment.
WARNINGS/LIMITATIONS: Do not ignore symptoms that may be due to low or high blood glucose, hypoglycemic unawareness, or dehydration. Check sensor glucose readings with a blood glucose meter when Check Blood Glucose symbol appears, when symptoms do not match system readings, or when readings are suspected to be inaccurate. The FreeStyle Libre system does not have alarms unless the sensor is scanned, and the system contains small parts that may be dangerous if swallowed. The FreeStyle Libre system is not approved for pregnant women, persons on dialysis, or critically-ill population. Sensor placement is not approved for sites other than the back of the arm and standard precautions for transmission of blood borne pathogens should be taken. The built-in blood glucose meter is not for use on dehydrated, hypotensive, in shock, hyperglycemic-hyperosmolar state, with or without ketosis, neonates, critically-ill patients, or for diagnosis or screening of diabetes.
