Very interesting to have the tour of how it works and what it feels like, in advance of Gone with the Wynns taking delivery of their HH44 very soon. However, I'm with you - Uma is the way to go, and I only hope you can progress the MOUNTAIN of work needed without too much pain. What the luxury of a big Catamaran does is take away the real challenge of sailing.

I am so happy to see you guys sailing again. Seeing the two living on land is OK, but it doesn't seem natural to me. When you two are on an ocean or sea both of you look as if there are no problems in the world, just peace, comfort and happiness. What do you mean you gotta get Uma to float again? She was floating the last time I saw her. It wasn't feasible to live on her but she was still floating. Also I must compliment Kika on the long, beeautiful, wind blown mess you call hair it is simply gorgeous. Never cut again, please. Dan, you lucky bugger keep that woman away from hair salons where they offer hair cuts.

It would be interesting if you guys could swing a trip on the Zen 50 with the Wingsail when it comes out. It may be the first renewables only vessel with a fairly decent turn of speed. The Wingsail is supposed to be not only more efficient than a conventional sail, but to be progamamble so that any idiot without sailing experience can sail it. In spite of my apparently being super qualified to test it, in that case, I think I will leave it to others! If it works, it will be great to get rid of the smell of diesel. The Wingsail also overcomes most of the problem about shading the solar, too.

22:46 - Speaking of hot showers, how's the pressure? I was recently on a chartered Bali cat and the (telescopic) faucet was decent but it definitely cannot be used as a shower! I tried to get some hot water out of it for a few seconds and the crew panicked because it drained the battery, so only cold short faucet water supply for the rest of the trip. A pull-out faucet DOES NOT make a shower!

The overarching principles of hybrid propulsion: 1. Power Source: Batteries. Enough battery storage to achieve relatively modest (5 kts), short-term (< 1 hr) movement by means of batteries alone. For hybrid cars, this would allow them to conduct the majority of their commutes via battery power alone. For hybrids sailboats, this would allow them to safely drop sails outside a harbor and use electric propulsion to motor both to a dock or slip, as well as back out into a channel or seaway before raising sails again. 2. Power Source: Diesel Fuel. Enough diesel fuel storage to achieve relatively strong (10 kts), long-term (>10 hr) movement by means of diesel alone. For hybrid cars, this would allow them to travel at least 500 miles between cities without refueling. For hybrid sailboats, this would allow them to motor several days out of doldrums back into wind-driven areas while topping off their electromotive battery propulsion. 3. Power Source: Solar Panels. Enough of a third source of energy (solar panels) to accomplish two things: - Beginning with a system that's totally dead, provide enough solar energy in one hour of average daylight to charge an engine starting battery enough to start a diesel engine. - At anchor, provide enough energy during any average 24-hour period to power normal systems on the boat for 36 hours, not including A/C. The 50% overkill will cover your panels' reduction in production over time. 4. The ability to use any system, directly, to propel the boat, even if the other systems are completely on the fritz. For hybrid vehicles, this means using diesel in town and electric on the highway, but each within their respective limits. For hybrid boats, this means using either system to drive the propeller, either individually or both. It also means getting at least 2 knots out of direct sunlight, alone.

Great job on the tour guys! Having a boat like that in a charter fleet makes a lot of sense for what it provides to the customer. If anything goes wrong you can't handle, you just pick up the phone and call the base and help is on the way. As a long distance world cruising boat I'd have some second thoughts. There is just way too much technology on that boat. I think you would need to have a minimum of two techies on board just to have a reasonable comfort level and I'm a technologist. I like the idea of a monohull with some tech but also a good manual reversion capability. Look forward to Uma's reconstruction videos.

@davidmartin3947
@davidmartin3947 5 месяцев назад
With the short runs these boats are actually doing in the BVIs then the sail is pretty much there for decoration and, I suppose, a bit of fun. Probably better to use something like the Greenline 45 Fly, which you can buy in a hybrid configuration and has bigger solar panels without shading as there are no sails.You would likely be running the diesel less often than in this supposed sail configuration, but I suppose for what is really a holiday boat real world usage is not the main consideration.

Not all Hybrids are created equal. What the HH has is more of a diesel-hybrid system with a diesel engine with a big alternator on it. (Like the combi system) as opposed to an electric-hybrid with an electric motor paired with a generator. Both are totally doable, yet totally different.
@camdening7315

Pretty creative hack using the MPPT’s as 48V-24v DC-DC converter, but from what I’ve read, it’s not a great idea, as if there is ever a fault, it is designed to short circuit the PV side which is not a big issue when it’s just solar panels, but when you have a 144 V 44kW battery up stream that your short circuiting… eek, at a minimum you would fry the MPPT, at worst…. Well… 🤯
@oznerol256
@oznerol256 15 дней назад
Why would it short the PV instead of letting it float to its max voltage? Surely having no current flow is safer. For example, you can't pull MC4 connectors when current is flowing.

It’s the Chevy Volt of boats. I had a Volt and loved it but went full battery electric a few years ago. The complexity of the Volt worried me as it aged so I sold it after four years. I would have the same fear with a boat like this one. The complexity is well beyond the average owner to troubleshoot so when something breaks it’s going to be very expensive.
@MrJhchrist
@MrJhchrist 5 месяцев назад
What is the additional complexity compared to any other boat in the class? Anything similar is going to just have slightly smaller gensets and 2x 75-100 hp yanmars to maintain in exchange for 1 less battery bank. Nobody is building or buying 14 passenger 60 foot cats without digital switching, power furling, multiple voltages etc. Sure a stripped out Uma is far simpler but that's like saying the replacement for you Chevy Volt should have been a fixed gear bicycle.

Same thing that happens when any of those things happen to a diesel boat. They need a robust electrical system to operate too. Starter battery. Computer controlled injectors. Water pumps. Chart plotters. When’s diesel boats gets hit my lighting, they’re dead in the water too. Only difference is, a sailor on an electric boat has become a very avid sailor who can move the boat under sailpower alone. Whereas someone who relies on the diesel engine to fix all their problems will probably be screwed if they loose it.

I can’t see why one would opt for this hybrid setup as opposed to just having two diesel engines to power the boat . As you pointed out having a generator running when you’re at anchor is unpleasant for those on board and annoying for your neighbours. I get the point that solar panels can get shaded by the rig but with a bit of ingenuity and more panels I’m sure this can be avoided. There is always wind and water generating power available to keep the seven (!) fridges going and obviously if the boat has ICE power then batteries will charge when motoring.
@SailingUma
@SailingUma 5 месяцев назад
The thing is, the all diesel version still has two massive gensets, that run just as long as the hybrid ones to. It has a smaller battery bank, the genny's need to run more often to keep them charged.

@@SailingUmaI see, that’s the price you pay for having all that equipment on board. Dan : " Really easy to source and figure out if there is an issue " LOL - sure it is , every joe at some remote atol will be able to repair that himself no problem . In reality a simple standard instrument suit with say a bad wind transducer , chafed wire or intermittent termination can be days to sort out . Immagine when that stuff is 15 years old . I cite the fact the furler stoped working - now what ? That could be really bad in a passage . Better have deep pockets to keep it all running and not stray far from a decent repair shop .
@RJMSINCR
@RJMSINCR 5 месяцев назад
Dan no doubt dug a bit deeper into it than could be included in the video, but he was unable to find the fault in the furler, and he knows a thing or two. So there they were, with a fairly new boat and a misbehaving motorized furler....how many pathways had to be examined/troubleshot to fix that one simple item...battery, breaker, switch, motor? not many, but on a fairly new boat? It would take a lot of experience (years) working with marine electrical systems to be able to troubleshoot that yacht. 10% yearly maintenance costs? Nah, a bit more is my guess.

Taking into account the larger boat would be set up much different if you owned it . On regen and amount batteries would drain before Gens kicked in . Since it is set up as a comfort power hog right now

It would be interesting to compare/ contrast the specs of this boat with what the WYNN’s will soon be breaking in (Palatial vs practical?)

It’s hard and doesn’t really make much sense to compare different boats built for entirely different purposes against each other. It’s like comparing energy consumption for en electric bike to a semi truck. Sure you could compare the actual numbers, but they won’t tell you anything useful. Of course the vacation palace uses more power than uma. It has 11AC. 7 fridges. 2 icemakers and a massive Watermaker. It’s a completely different both, built for a completely different job.

It looks that might almost press button in sailing seeing that most electrical are set automatically or press buttons very unique

Dehumidifiers are cheaper to buy and massively cheaper to run. They keep you cool in the summer and stop you getting cold in the winter. Moisture is the main constituent in transmission of heat energy through convection. Remove the moisture and you get dry heat rather than swampy muggy air. Remove the moisture and the damp air that chills you to the bone has gone. It also stops mould and mildew. And it dries your clothes cheaper and better than a tumble drier, you just hang your wrung out clothes on coat hangers on a rail. Your wet weather gear dries to. And you can use the grey water from the dehumidifier to wash your salty clothes with. Unless it is a specialist drinking water dehumidifier DO NOT DRINK the fresh water from it as it will contain lead and other heavy metals from the heat pump cooling mechanism as well as being standing water exposed to constant airflow so it is probably full of bacteria.

Looks to me that the cat platform easily beats beats the mono as a home to live in, and they seem to sail faster in many conditions. This from a land-lubber.

For sure. Without a double a catamaran has more living space than a mono. And they’re can be faster. Some at least. Not all. The main difference is the price tag and the motion.

If a mono hull boat is like a horse and carriage then a catamaran is like a modern car. If you can eliminate sails and rely on solar power with a generator for a last resort it is like a private jet.The last one won't happen in my time but it will happen.

Hope Uma gets 12/24V house batteries with seperate feed from solar panels for resiliency.

Just wondering why they are still running dc motors. Kind of reminds me of some of the old car conversions.

A great boat for it's purpose.... to act as a small cruise ship. I guess the label Hybrid-Electric is the new catchy title for things but I would call it a diesel with an electric transmission, in the same way some cats use hydraulic transmissions. While it is true it can be run on the batteries for a short time, I would argue that the batteries are protected from over charging in this manner rather than being made to motor electric only. Electric transmission is still a great choice if the prop is designed to use the electric motor's strengths but I don't see that. Running the house bank from the motor bank makes the house bank smaller as well as redundant and runs the gensets less often. The comments about outdoor space and other amenities, need to tempered with apples to apples comparisons. That is this boat should be compared to a similar priced mono-hull.... which would be much longer and have a hull that is quite wide too (as most newer mono-hulls are). such a mono-hull would likely still have a lot of outside areas and dual drives too. I can understand comparing this with what one already has though, I would do the same thing.
