Great video. It did cost me the 23 dollars to watch this one because I had to buy both volumes of Francois Playing the Beetles, but I won't factor that into my rating. Keep up the great work, guys.
Very interesting comparison for a rare Pickering cartridge. I would like to do some comments, if I may. This p-mount cartridge turntable was sold without any cartridge installed from factory, so who originally bought this had to acquire a cartridge so it can function properly, in this case a Pickering XSP-3003, the p-mount version of Pickering XSV-3000. This cartridge has a "stereohedron" stylus, a type of stylus someway similar to modern high end "contact line" type. These type of "nude" stylus are very sophisticated and therefore more expensive than the most popular conical or elliptical "bonded"stylus, being capable to extract much more information with less background noise from a record. The Audio Technica AT-85EP is a very good cartridge at its price category, equipped with bonded elliptical and a basic (yet good) generator. You can find, for example, a equivalent "vivid line" replacement stylus from LP Gear ($139) for the Pickering, about 4 times the cost of AT-85EP cartridge. So, technically speaking, you are sort of comparing apples and oranges and must be expected that this Pickering shows better definition and less background noise due only to stylus configuration. It is also expected that Pickering sounds "louder", since it the output level actually is (Pickering 4.7mV x Audio Technica 3.5mV). Musically speaking, its up the one's personal taste.
Thanks for the information! I bought the turntable from a classical music composer and figured they would have quality equipment. The simplicity of the P-Mount system was also very appealing.... I found and bookmarked the web site of that LP gear replacement stylus for the Pickering - thanks again.
My SL-QD35 motor needs help getting going. Just the slightest push and it goes. Is there a specific startup capacitor gone bad that might be the problem that you can identify for me? Other than that, all else works perfectly. Thank you
I've never taken mine apart, but a capacitor sounds like a good thought. Before looking into electronics, maybe just look for dried up grease and give everything a good cleaning...
