Tecsun S-8800 unboxing and first impressions, with a brief overview of the main features 

Great receiver. You get a lot for the money. Sensitive and picks up well with my balun long wire. Love the timing knob and the meter. Great VF M shortwave receiver.

imo: too much bucks for the bang... Tecsun is always like: we put 80% of what you like in it, but the 20% you are *really* looking for is in the next higher version. Seems to work well, I think everyone has at least two Tecsun receivers 😅

I picked up one of these receivers recently and whilst it is a competent product it lacks in some obvious ways, especially given the price. Firstly, no RF-Gain. This is a serious omission as such a function is very useful in mitigating noise and improving the signal to noise ratio. Secondly, the main buttons and dials are not back-lit. I use my receiver at night and would like to see what buttons I'm pressing without the use of a torch. Thirdly, only two positions for the attenuator. That's just plain cheap and even worse, both positions (DX,LOCAL) show no change in signal gain. Just plain bad engineering. Lastly, the front-end STILL overloads and the AGC circuit STILL has a slow attack and fast decay time. This results in bad distortion on SSB which is the primary mode I use for listening. All other modes (AM,FM,CW) are ok. I should also point out that the LCD backlight is poor and uneven. Even my cheap portables excel in this area.

I'm looking forward to your tests on the Tecsun, Clint. With a number of receiver models using the same SiLabs DSP chip which permits 10 Hz SSB tuning, it's harder for individual receivers to stand out. I think that careful PCB design and shielding may make the difference. This is similar to what makes one digital to audio converter (DAC) in the audiophile world outperform another, even when they use the same core DAC chip. Beyond that, I think audio and build quality makes a difference in these receivers. 73, Guy

I like the look of it and with the large speaker it should give decent audio, but it's too expensive for what you get I think. The PL series radios look better value. There are two other SW radios I know of that had remote controls; the AOR 7030 and the Lowe HF-250. For portable listening I'll stick to my Sony ICF-SW7600GR, though an HF-150 like you picked up recently is tempting!

This and other versions of the radio are already showing up used on eBay.

Where can this radio be safely purchased? AMAZON does not carry it.

Tecsun tend to be the same radios but in different clothes/boxes with slightly different configurations they never seem to break away from the basic design of previous units... they are however, very sensitive short wave radios..👍

In terms of the case and it would seem the build quality this radio looks identical to my Eton S350. I hope that's where the similarity ends as the Eton is not a very good receiver!

Good review. Imo it is too pricey for what it is. I read that it has the same hardware as the PL880. If this S-8800 does have a SYNC detector, then it is not that good as the one on the PL880 I found disappointing. Also for its price, it should have PBS which desktop receivers come with. Even the Eton E1 has this. I think if it was at £200 then it would make more sense to buy in comparison to the PL-880, but the latter is more my choice due to how much more portable it is. Looks like an interesting receiver. However, a bit pricy plus I'm not too keen on only being able to enter a frequency directly via the remote. Phil

I sold my Tecsun PL-660 and keep the Sangean ATS-909x.

It sure does look good and nice size but a tad too expensive I feel .

Can you tell if the main tuning knob is aluminum? Does it feel cold to the touch as a metal would or neutral (temperature wise ) as a plastic would?

Despite this seems a nice receiver given all the bells and whistles is has, it lacks a sync detector. That is a must at this price. If it had one, I surely would get one. Not as it is now.

I would absolutely purchase this receiver, however, that bloody horrid power button is a show stopper for me.

Единственный недостаток у этого девайса, это наличие пульта, включение некоторых команд возможно только с помощью пульта, мне кажется пульт вообще не нужен, зачем разработчик вообще его дополнил к этому радио.

I've noticed that Tecsun always leaves out a feature or two. For example, why doesn't this premium priced radio have a sync lock? I can guess that it doesn't have RDS because Tecsun loathes the idea of paying the licensing fee but a sync lock seems straightforward enough given that the one on the 660/680 is decent. I could do without the one from the 880 mind you.

People seem like this radio, but I have doubts about it.

I had this receiver some years ago..sorry for me a WC receiver.....

When you press buttons on it sound "very cheap" plastic screaming !
