Drunk Ted jumped out after loosing control of his car as it plunged into the channel killing one of his mistresses. 10 hours later, after leaving her for dead and after they found the car with her lifeless body in it, he reports himself being a heroic man.
A friend of mine at the time was from Massachusetts. He said: "The people of Massachusetts would re-elect him if he'd shot her on Boston Common at rush hour."
The car wasn't under that much water. He could have gotten her out or she could have gotten out herself. I'm guessing he was drunk and waited 10 hours to report it because he wanted the alcohol to be out of his system. I don't think he tried to help her
when you read the FBI testimony, before you even read their notes below, you can easily see the contradictions in his story, the lies about the timing and the absolute inhumane neglect of a woman who was drowning. most especially interesting is how HIS window was open and he managed to escape. now, why not return to the car, the lights were on, find the window, pull her out and let her float to the top. more to the story than ever actually said.
The narrator using the words"Why did you let this happen when we were counting on you" defines this tragedy in a political sense, insteadof a human one, which is a disservice to the memory of a young woman.
He couldn't report the accident because he was drunk. I read one theory that he planned to have his cousin Joe Gargan to say he was the driver, but Joe either refused or Ted changed his mind.
I'm confused. The car's upside down, the roof partially caved in from impact. He is able to get out presumably through the window. She's sitting next to him and can't get out? It's very doubtful either as was able to open the door. Opening a car door under water even in shallow water is nearly impossible. Some photos show the car upside down. Other photos show it on its side. Then the scuba diver photos show it upright. The water can't be more than 4 feet deep. I get that the tide was strong, and it was very dark, but still, how did he get out and she didn't? His actions afterwards can be explained but I still have trouble with the physics of the car. When the car hit the water, by rights both of them should have been knocked out as they hit the windshield. A car even at fairly low speeds hitting the water is almost like hitting a tree.
He wasn’t in the car, he was never in the car, they were fooling around and they saw a cop car and he got out and told her to take the car and go home he was never in the car and did not know that there was an accident until the morning that’s the only plausible explanation for his actions
What happened to the guys that went back to the car with him? Why didn't they make phone calls or advise him what to do while he was in a state of confusion?
Sure it was a matter of pride - Massachusetts first and foremost, especially then, was fanatically proud of the Kennedy success. The are no different than anyone else, blinded by what they THOUGHT was reflected glory on them, and didn't want to have the romance end. Politics is insanely, criminally illogical.
He was never in that car when it went off the bridge IMHO. He ran out earlier when a cop came earlier to check on them, and she took off alone. They left the party previously to screw in the car. They got caught. He took off. She drove off. He found out in the morning and lied his way out. What a tangled web...
We all make mistakes, but very few human beings are capable of watching a woman drown and simply walking away, let alone someone we know when we are responsible. For someone who did that, and who then used his wealth and power to evade all responsibility, to be held out as some kind of paragon of compassion is egregiously hypocritical and absurd. The one time in his life his compassion was tested, he failed to meet the most basic human standard. We have a duty to speak up when he is lionized.
There were two homes near the sight of the accident. Both residents of those homes commented about what they believed to be Kennedy's car passing their homes. After the accident; he could have stopped at either of these homes and called the police and fire department. He chose to walk all the way back to the cottage in which the party had been held. Kennedy claimed that he was taking Mary Jo to catch the ferry through which she could return to her lodging. Yet, she left her purse and key at the cottage where the party was being held. Someone's purse was found in the car which did NOT belong to Mary Jo. Mary Jo did NOT drown her lungs were not filled with water. There was an air pocket in the car from which she was breathing a limited amount of air. The diver who brought Mary Jo's body from the wreck stated that if Kennedy had called the first responders - he believed that they could have saved her life. In John Farrar's opinion, if the accident had occurred at 12:40 AM, Mary Jo Kopechne could have lived until 2:40 AM - an hour after Kennedy, Gargan, and Markham left the scene and headed for the ferry landing. Kennedy should have received a custodial sentence for his actions that night. After Kennedy reached the cottage where the party was being held; two of his friends went with him to the sight of the accident. Once again; he could have called the police. They attempted to free Mary Jo from the car but were unsuccessful. They took Kennedy to the area in which he could board a ferry. THEY WENT BACK TO THE PARTY instead of calling the police. Kennedy claimed that he swam the distance between the points of the ferry. He walked right past the fire house and said nothing! Mary Jo was LEFT TO DIE alone! Kennedy was more concerned about his public image than the life of this young woman! In John Farrar's opinion, if the accident had occurred at 12:40 AM, Mary Jo Kopechne could have lived until 2:40 AM - an hour after Kennedy, Gargan, and Markham left the scene and headed for the ferry landing. Didn't report the accident??? Because, it was just an "accident" if you don't hang around to be found out you were drunk driving!!! Then it becomes a crime. There is a special place in hell for liars like this.
I think the only possible explanation is the one where he was in the car with her they saw a police car Ted got out of the car and told her to go on by herself and that’s when she crashed and was alone in the car and Kennedy went back to his hotel not knowing that she crashed until the morning. That’s the only possible explanation he would never have left her in the car without telling anyone even if it was just telling his lawyer
Jenna Russell is speaking bull! Senator Edward M. Kennedy wasn't in the car! Watch the RU-vid upload called "Chappaquiddick" which was narrated by Ian Holm. That is the finest documentary ever done on this subject. There is no way Senator Kennedy could have gotten out if a car laying upside down and submerged in water! Kennedy was asked how he got out of the car and he answered "I don't know".
This is an evil in all that is done under the sun, that the same event happens to all. . Also, the hearts of the children of man are full of evil. . .& after that they go to the dead. But he who is joined with all the living has hope, for a living dog is better than a dead lion. For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing, & they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten. Their love & their hate & their envy have already perished, & forever they are forgotten
what would be a good reason to leave the party without his personnel driver or her hand bag and room key, was somthing important to talk about(a pregnancy)or they snuck of to have sex, they sure were not heading for a ferry that had long since left ...either way you can bet teddy was drunk as a skunk, his licence was expired and there was no way he was reporting anything till he consulted some advisers, what i find strange is the drivers window is clearly open in the pic , that is how he got out, but why did she not get out same window, was she banged up and lost her bearings , how did she get in the back seat and suffocate
Look there's Joe Sr the prohibition bootlegger (entrepeneur), Wall Street wheeler dealer doing business with the Third Reich, and Ambassador to the Court of St James, running back home when it got hairy in London. This interviewee makes the people of Massachussetts sound like serfs in bonded servitude to the K family. "Ted, why did you let this happen?"
Ted was a coward he had privilege all his life his families connections took care of him so he made a giant mistake but was let go then stayed in office time after time his poor wife loan had to take all
We are all flawed as humans and need to seek redemption for our wrongs towards others. I think the family has paid for them as a whole and it is time to move on.
