Canoe Builder Ted Moores is a legend in the canoe building world, having pioneered the cedar-strip and epoxy method. He’s the owner of Bear Mountain Boats and the author of the best-selling book Canoecraft, Kayakcraft and Kayaks You Can Build.
After more than 40 years building cedar-strip boats, Ted is one of the worlds most influential canoe builders who has inspired countless first time builders to build their own canoe through his books and workshops.
While filming Canoe: Icon of the North we interviewed Ted. Unfortunately, due to the number of interviews and restraints from the length of the film, only a small part of the interview could be used in Canoe: Icon of the North.
For fans of Canoe: Icon of the North, Trailguide Pictures is happy to release the full Ted Moores interview, recorded in 2015 while filming Canoe: Icon of the North.
Canoe: Icon of the North (first released in 2015) is a short film that will inspire viewers through the stories told by the legends of Canada's paddling community and explores the idea of the canoe as part of Canadian culture.
Starring Kevin Callan, Becky Mason, Ted Moores, Hugh Stewart, Adam VanKoeverden, Mark Oldershaw, John Jennings and Jeremy Ward.
I hope you enjoy this video. Thanks for watching! 🙂

My Wife bought Me "Canoe Craft for Christmas in about 1995 and I must have read through that book at least a dozen times and I told her I was going to build a Canoe out of that book but couldn't decide which one. She encouraged me to go over to Canada and take one of Ted Moors classes and in July of 1999 I made reservation for the class and packed my tent and headed to Beavermead Campground in Peterborough Canada. When I drove up to the building where Ted's shop was there was Ted sitting in a chair outside the building and smoking his pipe. I had gone over that book so many times it was as if I had personally known Ted for years yet this was my first meeting. There were nine of us in his class and we split into two groups and he had meetings with us every morning and in the afternoon and told us how we would proceed and what our expectations were each day and where we should be with the build. I will never forget walking into this one area and on the floor was an electric Tea Kettle and I thought OMG that is the same Tea Kettle in the book I had seen so many times in the book We ended up building a Prospector Canoe and am not sure what the other group built.I could go on and on but at the end of the week and have been with Ted and Joan Barrett and the other eight gentlemen like myself this was probably the best experience's of my life. When I got back to Michigan I built a Prospector Canoe from Western Red Cedar that I actually brought back from a lumber yard in Peterborough and then a Rob Roy Canoe from Teds plans and two boats from plans from CLC boats and as I am typing this I am 80% finished on a 11' Pram that I designed myself and am anxious to complete. So Jason thank you for the Video and to Ted and Joan thanks for some great Memories that I keep on enjoying! Cheers! Dale

Back around 1980, I got into some trouble with my first canoe, and called Ted out of the blue. He took the call and gave me a few tips on epoxy milking. Always grateful.

Hey Nick. You're very welcome. This interview was too good to hold on to. I'm hoping other builders will benefit in some way from being able to view this.

The first boat that I ever built over 20 years ago was a bear mountain boat from the book "Canoecraft" and the love of boat building and working with wood continues.

I know, right... :) Canoecraft was the first book I bought and read on the subject of woodstrip canoe building. Although my first boat was an AGB, Ted's book definitely did a lot to inspire me and help guide me through the building process. Oh, and my second was a Prospector Ranger.

I got a set of plans from Glen-L marine but Teds book helped me to end up with something this first time builder could be proud of.

Hi! This short film is truly a joyful peaceful experience...thank you! I would like more info on the "Ranger" 15 ft" matronly" prospector mentioned. Is that also a Chestnut canoe design? Is it available anywhere? Thanks again!! :-)

I've been looking at kit prices to build a 17 foot cedar strip canoe. Can anyone tell me the price? Am I reading the price right? That expensive? How about plans and I'll mill the cedar myself.

You might check with Nick Schade @ Guillemot Kayaks, he is a cedar strip guy also and does beautiful work. Chesapeake Light Craft in Annapolis, MD also has kits available and there are many more available on-line if you look around. I would guess that costs (not including labor) would run a minimum of $1000 for a kit. Plans are also available from several sources at varying prices.
