Teddy Riley should be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. He changed the game with New Jack Swing. Tons of hits and put many artists on the map. He's got Keith Sweat, Heavy D, Today and Mo D, B Sure and my man Bobby Brown, Legend.
We need a series of the evolution of the new jack swing era. 88-95. New jack swing is my whole way of life like a racist southerner 🤷🏾♀️😅🫣. Everything I am screams new jack swing era. I'm 1989 forever
In three classic groups (Guy, Wreckx n Effect, Blacksteet), produces everyone from Janet and Michael Jackson, Keith Sweat, Johnny Kemp, and many more, you AND literally creates a new type of music. Teddy Riley is an absolute legend.
This is the best interview that they’ve done. Teddy is a legend and we’re blessed to have witnessed his storied career and jam his music. I’m honored 🙏🏾
Couldn't click this fast enough!!!! I'm an 80's baby/90's kid. He is responsible for like 90% of the music from my childhood. The New Jack Swing Era was EVERYTHING! Take note kids, he is a LIVING LEGEND!!! 😄❤🎼🎵🎶🎤🎧
Here’s a little known fact about Teddy Riley he went to I.S 195 School of the Arts in Harlem and was a musical genius that could play the hell out of the drums. Just a talented young man with a spirit of humbleness. Teddy Riley is one of Harlem’s Sons who we proudly share with the World!!!! New Jack Swing Forever!
Teddy Riley, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, L.A. Reid and Babyface, Chuckii Booker and so many more writer/producers just to name a few are icons/legends within the new jack swing and golden era of R&B. Their production discography altogether speaks for itself.
Teddy was still in high-school and people couldn't wait to work with him as they all knew the gifts he truly had. The whole Harlem and soon others couldn't wait to get in the studio with him.
@lemmieatit most of Rap was based off of Staxx Records, James Brown, Jazz and Mtume samples. Motown records weren't being sampled for breakbeats and ish at the beginning. Motown started to get sampled in the late 80s-90s. But what the people are saying is that even Gladys, Patti, Aretha, Stevie, The Temptations.....hopped on New Jack Swing Beats that became hit records for them during the 80's.
Teddy Riley should redevelop the sound and look of Luke James! Luke is one of the best vocalists of today and he is going unnoticed. Thank goodness for the New Edition movie otherwise musically he is forgotten!!
DZIGIN Thanks, when I heard Luke James sing ,"My My My " by Johnny Gill I was in shock, his notes and riffs are amazing. He is the real deal and i think he can bring back R&B!
The New Jack Era was a fun age to be in your 20s and Clubbing. We had a ball grooving to the New Jack Swing. Didn’t have to worry about getting shot or anything.
I swear I wish I was old enough to be part of this era.. I listen to 90's music all the time. It was such a good time and I get nostalgic for it, even tho I was a baby
Man it was sooooo fun back in those days. It’s funny how times flys. You really didn’t have to worry about getting shot, but they were lacing your drinks back then.
I'm from Australia and I love Teddy Riley's influence in music. There should be a documentary made about him !! The name dropping is unbelievable. Peace.
This episode was EPIC! I felt like the student and he... the teacher! Teddy has the history tea!! I would love to see his movie!! I agree with so many things he said. Let’s get LIVE music back! Real music, real musicians. I’m glad I’m old enough to remember and have experienced Teddy in his day! He has made a major dent in this music industry! Love him!! Hit maker! “I can’t leave this earth with hatred!”
Wow. This has to be one of _the_ most classic BC interviews that I've ever seen. This interview was captivating, moving, inspiring, & heart-breaking, covered all the bases for the time allotted. Can you imaging being scammed out of millions by your financial advisor? And he was kickin' it with Alpo, Rich Porter, and AZ?? Teddy is a very forthcoming person & his honesty & willingness to engage made this interview. Very enjoyable. It wasn't long enough. One of my all time favorite producers, you can put 'Groove Me' on today & it'll still rock. Get Ted on Drink Champs stat. We need that movie! And welcome to Vegas Ted! #ImfromEastHarlem
I laugh when people say Kanye is one of the best producers of all time. Smh....gtfoh. People like Teddy Riley change generations and sounds. Kanye knows how to pick soul samples. U tell me...
I don't understand why we need to denigrate someone's name to exalt another. Teddy is a great. Kanye is wonderful too. Let's say Teddy is much better than Kanye, should Ye put a gun in his mouth? What does one have to do with the other?
This man has a beautiful speaking voice. People who speak truth softly are comfortable with themselves. He's been through it and come out the other side. God bless him
Heres what i learned. 1 i never knew he was from Harlem always thought it was VA. 2 never knew he had a hand in doug e fresh the show. 3 Bobby Brown stories never gets old. 4 he needs 2 hours for an interview
Yes and the friend that got killed was a high time of around my hood when I was younger Back eighties he had game room used to give me quarters remember the funeral it was big rip to Anthony B legendary brought back memories
Johnny Kemp was perfect for "Just Got Paid." Keith Sweat would not have done it justice. Johnny's voice and delivery were bubbly, affable, funky and fluid. He danced with the infectious rhythm of the musical track, then pinned it down and made love to it. I don't see Sweat doing that with his monotone and deadpan delivery.
Keith Sweat had a few joints like just got paid tho. I feel Keith would of made it a hit but Johnny Kemp made it a classic. Either way it still would have been a hit song.
I feel like playing instruments is a lost art (especially among black people) that's slowly coming back and I love it. If you don't know about Trap Jazz get into it. lbs
Garion Bush I’m not hating, just stating the facts.... and as far as my mother is concerned, she passed before that man was born. In my time where I come from we didn’t make disrespectful momma jabs for no damn reason. Your whole damn generation is disrespectful, and most of you lack substance, direction, grit, and basic common sense, and you are proof of that; but since we’re on the subjects of mommas..... only a son of a never married, single mother/hood pass around would make such a comment. Which makes me wonder if your momma was a rump shaker back in the day.... The question is did he have your momma? Or did they all have her?
It's about time. Teddy has been great upon great since stepping onto the scene. This is a GREAT interview, because it makes you want to know more about the individual personally, and not just his talents. I hope he does write and book AND.......do his own movie.
Teddy Riley baby...Genius!!!!!! Legend! So much more!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH... Listening to how he comes up with different chords and progressions and puts everything together in this delicious musical gumbo is just stirring my soul!!!! Oh, and I swear Suge is going to be in everyone's biopic in one way shape or form!... Sorry I have to edit and come back...Angela Yee is barely talking, I forgot she was in the room. Star struck maybe? I mean i get it, it's Teddy Riley...lol
Can someone please comment on did Teddy just throw "GUY" away? Is it me or do others feel like he did "GUY" wrong!!! New Yorkers loved "GUY" so much. What's the story on why he abandoned "GUY"??
After that home bust (attack) back in the 90s, he's never really cared for a public spot.. he got jumped at the crib and roughed up really, really bad.. can't quite remember the details on it though.
come on ctg how can you say beyonce is better than mj? Yeah she’s great but mj set the bar. He is the bar I’m sorry but you can’t say she’s better than him in any way shape or form and this is not to take anything away from her. Also mj music is milessss ahead of Beyoncé’s he wrote produced and had a lot of input into the music he made. He sold millions and his videos were record breaking and innovative. There is no comparison I can keep going.
Badria PREACH people annoying with that Bey is better nonsense they know better than that She can never ever reach Michael Jackson status not even in a million years nobody did it like him Michael Jackson remains untouched his music will forever be timeless and fresh short film's and sales
I am tired of this comparison. MJ is as high as a kite compared to B’Yonce. Compare B’Yonce to Tina Turner instead. Tina will possibly fly even higher than B’Yonce
If it wasn't for social media, Beyonce & Destiny's child would've never popped the way they did. Remember in the late 90's?! Destiny's child weren't really standing out, not even vocally because let's be real, they were just a R&B group. With social media and the right management, Beyonce became a superstar. MJ did it all with his music, his performance, ect - everything w/o social media and he draw crowds like crazy.
I like Beyonce alot, but comparing her to MJ, come on. We keep skipping steps in this era, her catalog doesn't even compare to Janet Jackson. Watch Janet Jackson live performances on RU-vid from the 90s and early 00s, I don't think Beyonce beats that. I mean go look up their catalogs, it's not even comparable.
Right ! I was looking at him this whole interview like he must’ve been about 10 years old when he was making these hits cuz they were decades ago and he still look fresh faced 😂
There is Quincy Jones & his son are Leon Slyvers,Jam & Lewis, L A & Face,,Teddy Riley & Marley Marl ! Those are The Architects of Music in the 80's,90's But, Honorable Mention to Teddy Riley because he's Hip Hop!
I grew up around listening to New Jack Swing music and good music back in the day and I'm 45 years old and I can really say this I really enjoyed this interview with Teddy Riley there was a lot of stuff that I've learned about the New Jack Swing era & about him as a musician that I never knew so I really enjoyed watching this this interview!💯💯💯💯
Teddy Is One Of The Coolest Dudes I Ever Met In My Life..When He Lived In Virginia Beach I Had The Opportunity To Go To Future Recording Studios A Few Times When Rump Shaker Was The Biggest Song In The Country And I Guess He Had So Many Hits It Was Nothing To Him...So Down To Earth..This Dude Even Had A Mattress On Top Of His Pool Table In The Studio And He Only Lived About 10 Mins Away. Crazy.
Wow at the beggining it seems like he was about CRY really weep. Did anyone see that? But overall THIS is a real Legend. I remember the New Jack swing jump off and movie New Jack City really giving it a push....🙋early 90's teens are like yessssss!!!!!he also surprisingly looks really young😊
My mom bought me a used casio keyboard. I dropped it one day and the stop button became the snare drum and the play button became the kick drum. I was like oh man it's on now. I went from that broken little casio keyboard to almost all the Roland and Yamaha keyboard workstations. All because of Teddy Riley.
dochickstv Envy: “For those that don’t know, please tell the people what you mean when you say you just sit back and listen when a legend in the room. “ 😂😭
Mr. Riley is LECTURING to us ALL!!! Whether you are in your 40s, 30s, or 20s, we are all learning from this interview. I feel like 80% of this stuff he's speaking, I didn't know about. Great interview.
Valdeisel Boxing my brother say he on child support because of Right or A Wrong Way by Keith Sweat. That song was recorded in a bedroom in Harlem😂😂😂😂😂💀💀
Groove Me, Remember The Time, Jam, Dangerous, I Want Her, Let’s Chill, Piece Of My Love, My Prerogative, all 3 Teddy’s Jams lol, I Like, Now That We Found Love, SWV’s Right Here remix, aka hits on hits on hits for days. Lol. #LongLiveNewJackSwing
Teddy Riley is definitely a legend. I'm glad people are recognizing his contribution to the culture. He is 51 and looks young, maybe not getting married is the key to youthfulness lol.
I know y’ll are jumping into conclusion just because TR looks 38 at 51. Many studies revealed married men live longer than single ones. Once an unmarried man hits retirement age, that’s when the hard times starts, if he’s not financially secured.
Married men live longer....married women die younger. Single men die younger...single women live longer. Looks like men really need women more than they need them....we literally live longer when we don't burden ourselves with you for the rest of our lives. :)
That Jane Child joint Teddy produced (I Don't Wanna Fall in Love) was a DOPE BEAT/CLASSIC SONG AND it's my little sister's favorite song ever!...LMAO!!!
I wish his mic was turned up or he spoke a bit louder. My laptop was on 100% volume, but that wasn't enough. I had to use my HDMI cable to link up with my TV and cut the volume up to 50 to hear what this legend was saying 😂😂 All that aside, I HAD to hear what this man had to say. I listened to an interview a few weeks ago and he was talking about how he chose the album cover for MJ's Dangerous. That is one of my FAVORITE album covers of all time! PLEASE make a biopic on this man sometime! I would love to have Babyface do a lengthy interview like this as well!
Yep! Indeed. When he said there were hardly no heavy hitters out there- who started their own genre- who could level up to him, the only one that instantly came to my mind was Prince. Because he had his own style, distinct culture that came with it, and virtually EVERYBODY in the pop music industry globally tried to copy it but couldn't. Prince owned that s**t. It would have been amazing if he and Ted did a project together.
He looks so youthful!!! BET needs to make a movie about him and New Jack Swing era. This guy provided the soundtrack to my teen years!!! Love you Teddy!!
I WONDER , WHAT HAPPENED... TO..( TONY..TERRY..) HE MADE ( SHE'S FRESH & FLY ) NO BODY..TALKS ABOUT...HIM....HE'S NOT EVEN..ON THE SEEN ANY MORE HIS LAST HIT WAS A WEDDING SONG....
so we dont need B.E.T involved in telling anyones story let them do their own projects independently so that they can have full creative control and not have to leave out important parts
