Upton Sinclair didn't have to lie or go very deep undercover. All he had to do was carry a metal lunchbox and he blended right into the factory floor. But this wasn't any factory. This was a part of Chicago's main export, the slaughterhouse and meatpacking plants. And what he found there would shock him and all of American's when he published the results in his novel The Jungle. And the public outcry would be exactly what Teddy Roosevelt needed to help put two new regulations in check: The Pure Food & Drug Act and the Federal Meat Inspection Act.

Today, a certain business loving base would be convinced that p*ss adds flavor and formaldehyde protects your child from autism. Roosevelt would see the book as proof that the borders need to be walled up (despite said many immigrants coming via boat then and now planes), that workers can't be trusted so temps would be fired as soon as lost a finger, and that the meat processing industry was a victim of overbearing government regulation (despite their being little to none then, much like now in many fields). The politics of today has made me quite cynical and think that the likes of the men and women responsible for some much progress then are a long extinct breed.

I worked in a meat packing place, not a butcher factory, for 4.5 years with 2 of my younger brothers. By the time the Year That Shall Not Be Named (2020), we were still getting accustomed to 6 day workweeks, oftentimes going 8-10 days without a day off. By the time the pandemic had his our plant, we were already taking measures to protect ourselves. Then our news outlets were covering a butcher factory in a town 30 minutes away from us focusing on the Covid numbers and how the workers were risking going into these Covid “hot zones” because they didn’t want to risk using up their 1 or 2 days of sick leave a year for something that wasn’t serious, we in my plant all could relate. Me and my brothers still work with food, but in a grocery distribution center for a major store chain, and we’re much more appreciated and valued, and have so many more benefits. But I still go into many different sandwich shops that my plant supplied, and can’t look at some of the meat cuts. Not because of I’ll practices, but because after all that time I can’t stand to look at those cuts without those working condition memories and the industrial smells coming back to mind. Super mad respect for those still working in the industry.

I'm finding myself relating more to Theodore than I thought I would. I'm not as anti-socialist as he seems to be, but I appreciate that he wasn't simply trying to overthrow the entire system, he just wanted to bring regulation to it. And really, I think that's what we need currently is not necessarily to burn down all of capitalism, but we need someone policing these big businesses and making sure they're playing fair. Because oh boy do they not play fair right now. Really bothered me (for example) how the CEOs of Loblaws, Wal-mart and Sobeys were called to explain themselves in front of the government why they felt it necessary to take away the hazard pay during the pandemic, and despite the government almost unanimously passing in favour of calling them in, they didn't actually have power to force the CEOs to show up. Of course the CEOs didn't, because there's nothing they would say that wouldn't put them and their companies in a bad light. The rich need to be held accountable and responsible for their actions.

I am glad you mentioned Morgan’s Steel Trust that stoped the Panic of 1907. On to the topic of how Sinclair’s novel “The Jungle” was coopted by Big Business. Gabriel Kolko’s Triump of Conservation chronicles how the Meat Packing Industry used “The Jungle” to eliminate small competitors, with the added bonus of getting access to foreign markets because poisoning customers is not good business. Kolko, a Socialist, published a study that is ironically beloved by Conservative Economists. Sinclair is probably contemplating his life’s choices in his afterlife because of this. Rockefeller is probably tipping his hat to Sinclair as Sinclair grimaces.

Theodore Roosevelt was a traditionalist conservative in the classical European sense. His policies are only "progressive" in the context of the hyper market-liberal American system. He's about as much of a socialist as Bismarck was, with the difference being that most European conservatives tend to "get" the fact that Bismarck extended social welfare and state paternalism exactly to dismantle early German socialism, while Theodore Roosevelts almost identical approach to the business world is much more rarely recognized as a conservative maneuver. He was a conservative, but a Big State conservative. They're not rare, just rarer in north American history than most other places.
