Tedeschi Trucks Band rehearse a special debut performance of Santana's "Soul Sacrifice" backstage at Bethel Woods, site of the legendary 1969 Woodstock Festival, in honor of Carlos Santana's birthday.
His slide playing is obviously incredibly good, but the soul he puts into the slide playing comes out very well when he's playing without a slide as well. He's just got incredible feel and phrasing with and without slide.
He’s better than good ! He’s magnificent. I would give up sex if I could play 1/4 as good as him. Humm, well maybe not but he is an incredible guitarist.
Have a listen/look at their performance of Everybody's Talking at Me. Derek plays without a slide for the first half of the song, basically playing a rhythm line while his wife sings. At 2:40, you can see him reach his right hand down quickly and the hand comes up with the slide on his finger (he does it very deftly, it's barely noticeable) and then plays the rest of the song that way. The slide part echoes his wife's vocal, it really "sings". This guy is a true guitar master. Here's the link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kiWbBC0SouU.html
Remember - Derek plays everything in open E tuning, not just the slide guitar. If you watch, you can see what he does to hit those bluesy Santana notes. It's crazy. He said he's been doing that for so long that when he's handed a guitar in standard tuning it feels like a different instrument. "I feel like a beginner." God bless ya, kid. You are awesome.
@@ziblot1235 Derek is Butch Trucks' (one of the original Allman Bros drummers) nephew. He was born in Jacksonville, Florida, and I believe he still lives there when not on the road. A total living guitar legend as far as I'm concerned. His skills are unmatched.
When self-recording came out, a lot of bands recorded on the tour bus using boxes for drums. If I can remember, it was Jackson Browne who first came out with a tour bus recording that was a hit. His drummer said he used a bass pedal on a cardboard box.
I agree. It would have been preferable to have the mic closer to Derek but beggars can't be choosers. This is still awesome. Kinda like the Elvis 3am gospel jams.
Yeah especially since they were all trippin on LSD.Carlos says he remembers that the guitar neck felt like a snake and the drummer? That dude was feelin it.
This band takes “oldies” which are now classics and treats them with reverence and verve. They play all the songs they love with deep love and feeling. Love that about them.
This is talent, y'all. They appear to just be messing around in their dressing room and they really nail it. I knew I heard bits and pieces of Carlos in Derek, but now I know. I have GOT to catch these guys on tour. My favorite Santana instrumental, btw.
Ryan Hall I have been seeing Derek live since 1996. One of the shows I was lucky to catch was Derek Trucks Band opening for Santana in 2008 at Chastain Amphitheater in Atlanta, GA. That show was definitely special. I also met Derek the night before the Chastain show while leaving a Braves baseball game. Turned around and he was walking out behind us.
You wont be disappointed, i heard this in 2017 Live in VT.....We all left in amazment of how Dead On it sounded!! Not too many players DARE cover Santana!!
Thought those drums sounded different while I was typing something in a message? But then I checked the video to see who was playing this cover and saw the cardboard box, lol? Sounded pretty good. Dude doesn't have to worry about getting his drum set stolen. Just get another free box at the local grocery store, lol.
Love this band so much. See them as often as I can. I would love to hear you guys cover 'I'll Take You There' by the Staple Singers (If you haven't already!) Just think that could be really cool. 💛
@@aquamate5127 Yes... We were based out of Denver. 4 guys , 2 Female vocalists. Traveled from Omaha to California, Months at a time on the road playing 5-6 nites a week. what Fun!
There are so many talented musicians in this band and they all play so well together that it is really crazy over the top stuff they produce. Always love listening to their music no matter what song they are playing because it's so good!!!
When I listen to Derek I feel like 90 or 95 percent of blues guitarist out there are just not good enough yet. And I love the blues, blues rock n soul and blues guitarists.. hes so far ahead of the pack it's humbling ....
This reminds me of how great that early Santana stuff was ... holy cow that stuff cooked. And this was not bad ... Just didn't see enough of those beautiful Susan legs ...
i've been watching this video every day for the past couple of days, i don't know why. it's just so good. such a perfect little hint of what that damn man is capable of. i am really into the sound of the cardboard box too, good shit
That was sensational, but you cant recreate what happened at Woodstock. The backroom with Taj, however was a different story. That shit was dirty, dirty good.
@@javiceres This should be accessible to you. Jeff Beck based it off of an Indian classical fusion song. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-drAv2FoYji8.html
Hey! I have a new instrument I can afford for my granddaughter lol. I’ve already taught her the spoons, the washboard, shakers, mbira, acoustic, just everything sitting around the house to pick up and play. Now Michael Jackson got printed credits in the liners just for snapping lol, so cardboard drummer should get some clout too 😊 love seeing you guys! If only I could afford a ticket, I’d be St Augustine bound! Maybe next year. So bummed 🙁 but maybe TTB will come back w full band or do the Wheels of Soul Tour again. This brings me back to Delaney and Bonnie w Eric Clapton Poor Elijah. Bonnie drumming on her lap. She kept real good time and nifty beat. Cheers!
I've heard too many folks think that they're emulating Carlos when they have a creamy overdriven tone and take 5 minutes to bend up from the b7 to the tonic [including me] .... but I've never actually heard someone embody Woodstock in the dressing room...... on another level I am sure
For all you younger kids, nothing to see here. No backup dancers. No costume changes. No rapping. No auto tuning. No different producer and writer for every song. No inane lyrics or repetitive vocals. No booty shaking or twerking. Sorry. Nothing of current value whatsoever. You can go back to playing the video game on your phone or posting Instagram selfies. Back to texting your friend about the Bachelor contestants.
Interesting... As good as Trucks is, this little jam showed how Santana was and will always be the Master of this song. Truck's little rendition was actually pretty shit.
Such a beautiful hard working band that is somehow still under most folks radar. Seen em at all good festival and I believe one in n.c. RIp allman bro's
This video would get soooo many more clicks if it were labeled, “Susan Tedeschi has the bottom knocked out of her box.”- that may be misleading, as I am not sure who that box belongs to.
Cardboard drums don't sound bad at all. Mike them up, add a bunch of reverse gated reverb and they rock. They don't last long but they're cheap to replace.
