J. Craig Venter is a biologist most known for his contributions, in 2001, of sequencing the first draft human genome and in 2007 for the first complete diploid human genome. In 2010 he and his team announced success in constructing the first synthetic bacterial cell. His present work focuses on creating synthetic biological organisms and applications of this work, and discovering genetic diversity in the world's oceans.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event: In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
On January 14, 2011, Caltech hosted TEDxCaltech, an exciting one-day event to honor Richard Feynman, Nobel Laureate, Caltech physics professor, iconoclast, visionary, and all-around "curious character." Visit TEDxCaltech.com for more details.

After almost 4 billion years of evolution by natural selection, Craig and his team come along and change that forever. Natural selection will not be the main driving force for the evolution of future organisms. I believe that this might be the next (and probably the most important) step in the evolution of life on Earth, if we use this knowledge wisely.

How do you get the letter "O" in the genetic code? There is no "O" in the single letter list of the standard amino acids. .... Never mind... I just looked it up, it's Pyrrolysine.

What you need to change a persons gene expression (rather than just one cell) is a delivery system that passes on the new code to every new cell produced. Usually that's a virus which has been implanted into a bacteria...and is then injected into the host organism. The bacteria infects X number of cells, the virus replicates in the cells that are infected, they then kill the host cell by bursting and infect other cells etc...and passes on the new code.

@AleifrLeifrson Sure, it's easy enough to inject molecules which are a part of cell signaling pathway leading to gene expression regulation. I am by no means an expert on the subject but I guess we will eventually be able to have complete control over gene expression sooner or later.

not entirely, because other organelles are involved in aging and our inability to extend life indefinitely. the major one that comes to mind is the mitochondrion, which is present (several hundreds of them in each of our cells, on average) and is responsible for producing reactive oxidative compounds that wear and tear cellular processes. these cannot be ameliorated by consuming antioxidants, and are also responsible for some intracellular signalling!

@AleifrLeifrson You are correct, we can't change DNA to affect a whole living person. A quickly replicating cell, like you describe, is basically cancer. The best we might be able to do to a living person is to change a large amount of adult stem cells, and as they will proliferate to a huge number of cells.

@terracottapie13 How about deactivating genes or activating dormant genes? That happens all the time in our bodies, so I don't see why we couldn't do it on purpose.

The Nobel laureate A. Carrel determined in his experiments that the cell is immortal. Ages and dies are a result of natural wear and tear. Researchers L. L. Woodruff, S.I. Metalnikov came to the same result. Another Nobel laureate, founder of science gerontology, physiologist I. Mechnikov also pointed to the natural, physiological mechanisms of aging and, as a result, death. It is quite enough to know to begin the rejuvenation of old cells and old people. There are methods of rejuvenation, proven by people and confirmed by academic medicine. The human body has powerful recovery mechanisms. They make a weak body athletic; they can make the old body young and beautiful. But aging researchers ignore these mechanisms. Therefore, old age and death still kill people.

@lordjavathe3rd I'm pretty sure we can't change our DNA. We can probably change the DNA in a single cell, but I'm pretty sure that's not going to change much. But who knows, maybe if you change the DNA of a cell, if it replicates fast enough, maybe it can take over. Anyways, I'm no expert either...

@EuropeanGuy87 I do not believe, for example, making designer babies is as appealing to people as heroin and the technology involved will be vastly more difficult to acquire compared to making heroin. Which means at worst designer babies will be made on a much smaller scale. Will that really be such a bad thing compared to letting millions of people suffer because of genetic diseases?

Lol thank you. That is where I am. Seems like a leap from "I spent more than a quarter of my life making a virus to hijack another cell into eating its own DNA so I could insert the minimum self replicating code with a code (so meta) in it that doesn't make any functional proteins but does have a misquote and an email address" to "we can make anything imaginable."

@EuropeanGuy87 There are definitely areas deserving ethical consideration within modern biotechnology. As our ability improves we will have to tread more carefully. However saying "not normal=bad" is committing the naturalistic fallacy and not a valid argument. Should we "let nature take it's course" concerning diseases? To me one of the most exciting possibilities of being able to control genetics is to give people with genetic diseases a chance to have a normal life, is this unethical to you?

@EuropeanGuy87 Would you neglect treating a suffering person because the world is overpopulated? I do not see the logic behind that. Overpopulation can probably be solved with a combination of technological advancements allowing us to sustain a greater population (such as maximizing food production and space exploration) and cultural advancements leading to people having fewer children (many western countries have reached the point where only immigration increases the population.

Then, considering judeo-christian religions, God was the only creator of everything on Earth and they think humans couldn't either replicate God's creations, or try to explain how, in nature, various processess scientifically occur without needing a "creator".

The "very terrible things" you mention will also be illegal, or they probably won't be all that terrible.

@EuropeanGuy87 Say What? So we should be eating grain in its natural form of 15,000 years ago? We'd get maybe 20 bushels per acre. Man has toyed with and modified crops and beasts since the beginning of civilization. Going to the genetic level is the same thing, only more precise. As for mistakes, just look at "Purebread" dogs and other inbread mistakes. But you won't count these.
@MaryBilge

The idea of eating foods proven to be safe/wholesome over several generations is a good one. But it has nothing to do with being "natural". Everything touched by humanity is unnatural, including wheat, corn etc. "Organic" is just a word for "expensive". What does it mean? Noone knows if any of those 'organic' companies claiming GMO free food is actually GMO free cos noone checks. The best advice for healthy food is to eat something grown and made locally. All the rest is smoke and mirrors
@TM-qz8mg

I say that there are so many people that need work/income to assist in clearing and finding solutions to the many accumulated problems in a real and beneficial cooperation that the systems that keep civilization from true progress is the issue to change or adjust. Checks and balances. Rules/laws and regulations. Trim down unneeded laws that actually lead to problems/corruption.Accountability when and where needed. true freedom is balanced by responsibility. So there are many jobs but not enough ways to pay or assist everyone. That is a problem.
