This is amazing. I have always found storytelling in all its forms wonderful as ways to see the world through another person's eyes. This takes that to another level, and makes me wonder how many people who aren't d/Deaf are still letting themselves be held within that box, when the story that would express their world perhaps would not fit all those preconceived rules, either.

By challenging the problematic assumption that "hearing" film language can be appropriated to a Deaf perspective, you also provide support for the concept of ASL literacy. Following the model you present in an educational context would help legitimize the argument that literacy skills that are acquired and expressed through a visual language are equivalent in scope and complexity to those in English or any other spoken language. Thank you for this and I look forward to seeing your future work!

I've thought about how movies always are made from a hearing perspective and what it would be like if they were made from a d/Deaf perspective. Thank you for giving me a clue! I wish more film makers would explore the Deaf perspectives!

Strong stuff, Wayne Betts. You're on the cusp of a revolution in film language. Perhaps a brand new textbook for deaf auteurs?

Wow, we're DEAFinetly are thinking alike!!!! I have always been questioning the traditional cinematography and scripts... Thinking that ASL is indeed the language for filmmaking!!! (And you know what's amazing? My application to the film major has been rejected by the RIT director of the film department for having strongly believed that ASL is the language for film. The director himself mentionned this to me in person after arguing for an hour and half!!! Lol!

Anyone else out there who really wanted to watch this, but aren't fluent enough in ASL to understand well enough? I guess I just have a greater ambition to learn more now.

Naomi Ekberg I don't know ASL, but I used the captions to understand. I only got like one sign in a sentence or two. I'm not even fully fluent in my own sign language yet, but I keep studying and practicing. Well get there, with hard work and dedication, hopefully.

Wayne was limited in his exploration of cinematography because he was confined by the rules of film that were made for people who perceive film with sound. Thinking outside of the box, Wayne has been applying what would be how he views the world, (from a Deaf perspective), and this has enabled him to break the norms of hearing film language and open up exploration into different ways films can be perceived.
