In this talk Kevin Warwick, professor of Cybernetics at Reading University presents his talk on Cyborgs at TEDxOxford on 26th September 2011. He presents ideas on bringing back sight to the blind, allowing humans to see with sonar, and communicating with thought alone by combining artificial components with humans.
TEDxOxford is a conference run entirely by students of Oxford University for young people. To find out more about TEDxOxford see www.tedxoxford....
About TEDx:
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I want to see with Sonar! What would it FEEL like to have another sense?!

Where can I "put my name down"? As he said it. I'm for sure trying to be a cyborg. Extra senses, I want any and all of them. The implications are fucking amazing. I'm tired of living in this run down, ignorant greed fest. Let's make that jump. Nobody would ever be able to bullshit me if I can read their vitals from across the room through my fingertips.

Emotions? Imagine downloading happiness off the internet and playing it on loop.

Hmm. Not while "very painful" Also do you really want everything you think to be made public in an instant? (some people have this already with social media)

I fancy infrared, ultraviolet, sonar, etc. Where do I put my name down? I guess I'll have to send him an email.

there is a superhero who can see with sonar, he's called Daredevil, so I am very in favour of that being a reality lol :P

The children don't get a say on if they get implanted, then. After all, who would really care if their parents could track them wherever they go? I'm sure no-one would object -_-

rRobert Smith In theory, yes...but unfortunately, being able to create an animat with an entire human brain would be quite difficult. The technology is constantly improving, though.

I share Warwick's extreme impatience with stupid, un-libertarian, coercive self-appointed "ethicists." Such moronic luddite people know nothing of ethics or individual rights. I favor cyborgism as a means of circumventing such ignorance and belligerence.
