Jacob Barnett is an American mathematician and child prodigy. At 8 years old, Jacob began sneaking into the back of college lectures at IUPUI. After being diagnosed with autism since the age of two and placed in his school's special ed. program, Jacob's teachers and doctors were astonished to learn he was able to teach calculus to college students.
At age nine, while playing with shapes, Jacob built a series of mathematical models that expanded Einstein's field of relativity. A professor at Princeton reviewed his work and confirmed that it was groundbreaking and could someday result in a Nobel Prize. At age 10, Jacob was formally accepted to the University as a full-time college student and went straight into a paid research position in the field of condensed matter physics. For his original work in this field, Jacob set a record, becoming the world's youngest astrophysics researcher. His paper was subsequently accepted for publication by Physical Review A, a scientific journal shared on sites such as NASA, the Smithsonian, and Harvard's webpage. Jacob's work aims to help improve the way light travels in technology.
Jacob is also CEO and founder of Wheel LLC, a business he started in his mom's garage, and is in the process of writing a book to help end "math phobia" in his generation.
Jacob's favorite pastime is playing basketball with the kids at his charity, Jacob's Place. It is a place where kids with autism are inspired every day to be their true authentic selves...just like Jacob.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Watching him speak and I can’t stop smiling. He is so open and honest about what makes him happy and shares it freely. He makes a great point. Think more than you learn. Learning is basically just memorizing. I hope he stays this honest and open.

@@junaidmughal3806I'm assuming you know what happened with him and his family by now? He looks so unhappy now but you can find recent videos of him online doing foosball tournaments- he seems pretty happy doing that. But as far as his studies, it's not clear what he's doing with that. I'm so wrapped up in the Natalia case, I could've missed what Jake is currently up to in the documentary.

I've known many brilliant people & we all have our moments when we talk like this. He was excited, passionate, a little afraid & yes, not very good at public speaking. So what? His point is valid. If you don't think so, you aren't brilliant. That's just how it is. I'm not insulting you. You just don't understand. You can be a cog in the system or you can design a system. You can accept limitations or you can shatter them & forge new ground. Jacob is going to do great things & prove it.

He even speak words like a an adult in mid to late 20's to mid 30's. 😊😊😊 Great kid and a thought provoking idea! Who knows how many ideas have been created from the idea Jacob planted forward in many people who was there, mentored others and on, and on! I actually learn better in non normal ways of typical modern ways. I graduated at 17, but have not completed any grades from 6th g4ade with some 7th grade in the beginning before being pulled out because of inability to pay for homeschooling or not wanting me to go to public. So I was then made to work in construction company that my Dad had. That hard work trained me how to excelled in a job that had many different types of things to learn. I then was burnt out and wanted to be free from the construction work and join the military. In order to get in was that I had to get an GED, which I passed on the first try. Since I was 17, I was required to attend 3 - 2 hour classes brushing any 17 year old up on subjects. Then if needed any additional instruction if needed. I have now been in the emergency services as a Paramedic and a Former Fire Chief of total years currently at 24 years. Enough classes to eqaul enough education for at a minimum of a Masters degree. I have a B.S. in Fire Administration and a minor in Emergency Management. I get extremely frustrated with normal life if I am not learning something. My late brother was extremely more intelligent in anything fire and regular mechanics abilities were very high. He just couldn't take tests well. So just like my Dad he was limited stuff or great jobs. He used my GED to get his CDL. He excelled in it. He drove for 2.2 million miles in 2 decades. COVID took him, but barely gave a irritating taste loss and fatigue for a small 3 to 7 days x 2. So who knows why, maybe it was that i have been exposed to many illnesses within my patient care of 22 years. Also my Mom and Dad dont get sick. Except my Mom has MS! I had both deadly strains that raveged the department. Adapting to your own unique way learn how you best do with Assistance when needed! God bless!

I don't understand the context of this speech. Is he trying to tell us that only he is a genius? Yeah I get what he said at the very end but it was way out from left field. Just wish someone would of helped him with his presentation so it wouldn't be all over the place. Yes I do know he is 13 but everyone is putting him on the genius pedestal so he should be smart enough to give a proper presentation to us non geniuses.
@user-vz2im6fe4g
@user-vz2im6fe4g 5 лет назад
Hi. I’ve noticed your attitude is pretty defensive and it’s probably because you’re evaluating not only a presentation, but also a human being, without informing yourself first. I can assure you that this child wasn’t ‘put on the genius pedestal’, he clearly stated that his doctors predicted that he will never be able to even talk. He was denied basic things that are the norm for most other kids (school!) and his family worked hard to compensate (and they did way better than schools do). The most interesting detail is that he started to develop his interests because he wasn’t pressured to learn, learn, learn. It nicely illustrates how schools dumb us down. Nevertheless, it is sad that we live in a world where kids like him are ignored and avoided by principals, teachers, doctors, the society... It’s a disgrace and I suggest you read or watch content about autism and other characteristics of people which no one wants to deal with and which people us as excuses to look down on people that should be looked up to. The ‘context’ and the main point are exactly opposite of what you got from this video. He is saying that EVERYONE can be a genius because it’s not about talent. He even subtly condoned the usage of the word ‘genius’, as those people are simply rare individuals who have decided to stop learning and to start thinking and creating, and the media translated it to ‘genius’ and made it seem like it’s something achievable only for those who were ‘born that way’, you know, the ‘chosen ones’. His point of view is brilliant, most adults are not willing to admit these truths. ‘Smart enough to give a proper presentation’ sounds really like a really rough thing to say to anyone, especially when reffering to a child. I, on the other side, completely understood everything, it all seemed contected, some things were repeated which is always a good thing because it brings you back to the main point. He made jokes, he didn’t seem nervous (just really happy and inspired), and there was not one awkward moment. This is a great accomplishment, not for a child, but for any adult. I shared it with a lot of people and all of them absolutely understood the point if they were listening carefully and not judging (or at least trying not to). Please, understand that your words are heard when you post them online and they have impact. Don’t make that impact a negative one for a person who is, along with his parents and family, trying to make the world a better place, which is exactly what he is doing with this presentation. Don’t be that person who makes other people feel bad and who makes their close ones say “don’t listen to him, he is just unhappy about himself”. You can do better ✌️😊
