I love Opeth, but when I first heard them I had similar repulsion towards the growling parts, I'm sure most of the Opeth fans had. You have to let the growls grow on you over time. I think this is a good, honest reaction. You can't expect them to fully apreciate this masterpiece as their introduction to Opeth.
Ghost of Perdition is not an ideal introduction to the band. There's so much going on that it can put off a first-time listener. I remember listening to it the first time, and I was like wtf is this? Blackwater Park was the song that got me into Opeth.
I was thinking that. When I think over use of DP and I cannot for the life of me remeber what theyre called. please help. that Australian fast as hell band from 2000's. Theres plenty others but its annoying me. so please help. lol edit. it was bezerker. phew! lol
Yes, growling is a bit different from screaming. It also takes technique to master it. I liked this reaction, the good thing about Opeth is that you can enjoy a variety of genres in the same band. If you want the heaviest tracks try Deliverance, if you like more melodic slow pace songs try Windowpane.
Definitely needs multiple listens, it was the first song I listened to by Opeth. It took me a few listens to really like and appreciate the song. Now I would say it is my favorite progressive metal song. The band is actually a 5 piece 2 guitars, bass, drums, and if you listen closely you can hear the keyboard player who also does some backing vocals. The guy who does the vocals, Mikael Akerfeldt, also plays guitar. If you have free time to listen to the song again I would recommend watching it live at the roundhouse and/or at red rocks. If I would suggest another song, it would be bleak, which has more of a typical song structure.
yeah. When editing these videos I have to listen to the song while editing. So it wore on me more when editing. Ive listened to it more since reacting to it.
@@CampSiteVlogs Opeth have a huge discography that ranges from very soft to very heavy. I'd highly recommend listening to 'Windowpane' for an easier but equally enjoyable listen, and 'Deliverance' which has the perfect mixture of heavy and melodic.
The drummer is doing like crazy jazz compositions and odd timing beats and you’re saying the use of double bass is lazy lol learn to play drums and then we can talk
One way to think of the deep growls and screams is to think of his voice as an instrument. Listen to the tone of the music and the tone of his voice. The music also sets an atmosphere for how the vocals are sung. Opeth are masters of composition and range. You guys are still really young and have a lot to experience still. Keep it up!
Thanks for diving into this! Opeth has been around for 25+ years...lots of great material. 👌You guys would enjoy their most recent records!! (Heritage, Pale Communion, Sorceress)
Opeth is my all tima favorite band. The only band tatto i would ever have, haha. But srsly... They're not an easy listen i would highly suggest to start with Burden or ANYTHING of the Damnation album (Specially Windowpane or in my time of need). I wouldn't dare naming a favorite album, but i gotta say that this is my favorite sound production of them. Try Hours of Wealth or Harlequin Forest out of this album. Thanks for reacting to them. Lovely channel.
Screaming would be the untrained result produced by someone who doesn't know what they are doing. Growling is a guttural vocal technique that you just heard from Mikael Âkerfeldt.
Nah screaming is something people do when they are afraid and screaming for help. It sounds nothing like this. This is growling. It is what an angry person or a stalking predator does. Screaming is what the prey does. ;)
@kimi Yeah. I definitely know there is screaming. It comes in many forms and has actually existed in metal longer than the growling technique. There are some vocalists that intermix growls and screams. Though in the old days some of what Judas Priest does, AC/DC and others would be called screaming. Is it? I've also heard older bands that the vocal style was more what I'd classify as screaming. Though some stuff people might call screaming is just growling at a different pitch. You definitely vocally approach screaming very different from growling.
I've been to a lot of concerts and I cry pretty easily. The first time I saw Opeth, they opened with this song and I couldn't stop weeping. I've never cried at any other concert.
I think Reverie/Harlequin Forest is the best Opeth track for a new listener to check out...it brilliantly encompasses everything great about the band without being too harsh or too light.
13:00 It's kinda the main cliché of Death metal; growls and double bass. They're pionéers turned renegades of Progressive Death Metal, because nowadays they only make prog rock.
Welcome to Opeth. This is the moment you start to REALLY open your mind. Don't expect to understand it at the first listen. This type of music grows in you and when you realize, you are already in love.
Hell yeah \m/ I like how you both are just too nice, like saying"it's not bad" but "I won't listen again" xD seems like y'all trying to not push the fans away by criticism, but that's all part of it. me personally, maybe only half the music I love I was into on the 1st listen, others takes 4+ listens . Either way I respect your opinions and won't get mad if you don't like something, so please don't feel the need to pander for the sake of not pissing anyone off (:
Ne Oblivscaris - and the Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope. It beautiful, hard and it even has a violin player.... enjoy.🔥. Try Blackwater Park by Opeth. If you love the mellower sound the whole Damnation by Opeth you will love. It's kind of their non- electric, hard album. They said it was the most difficult they recorded.
There is always this 3 way battle between Tool , Opeth and Dream Theater as which one is the best Progressive Metal band in the world. For me its Tool as no 1, Opeth as no 2 and Dream Theatre as no 3. Btw gr8 reaction once again.
LOL. DT is FAR (!!!) ahead of the rest. In terms of progressiveness, creativity, mastery, skill and soul. DT is just another league. P.S.: Love and adore all three bands.
@@alexeyyakovich7464 , I disagree. DT has long been top of my list, but I lost interest. From Awake to SFAM they made really solid albums. But after that, there were just too many ideas stuffed into the music. As far as technical proficiency goes, DT is probably the best between the three of them (no disrespect to Danny Carey), as far as songwriting goes, both Opeth and Tool are more to my liking. there are too many aspects to a band, and it's all subjective anyways. I don't think you should be thinking in terms of leagues. Because they excel at different things.
1. Opeth 2. Agalloch 3. Edge of Sanity 4. Dream Theater 5, 6, etc. And after scraping the bottom of the barrel all I could think of now is Tool ---- obnoxiously overhyped band!
BTW, Martin López is one the greatest drummers i have ever heard. If you guys are interested on drumming, check out Windowpane is a slower aproach but GOD DAMN the drumming is incredible. I can name a few others: Eternal Rains Will Come (Martin Axenrot current drummer). Blackwater Park. Beneath the Mire. Bleak. The Drapery Falls. Srsly, try Burden. Sorry for the spam. I love them.
This is a ghost story...most Opeth songs are stories. Think of the growls being the voice of the antagonist..... Perdition is a state of eternal punishment for an unrepentant sinner.
There are some great live videos of them actually performing this song. It adds another dimension. Worth checking out. They are amazing live. Some songs are better live in my first hand experience, as in better than the studio version.
A death metal growl is a very guttural noise that results from pushing air through a set of "fake" vocal chords by using the diaphragm (belly muscles). It's basically a controlled version of the sort of grunting sounds you make when you try to push out a turd.
Hey guys, love your videos & the detail you put into analysing new stuff, it’s really refreshing! Would love to see more Pink Floyd, but if if you’re looking for something really interesting & different to check out, I’d suggest the japanese rock/metal band Dir En Grey - their vocalist has one of the most extraordinary voices in the world, they do a pretty equal mix of clean & screamed vocals, and their online fanbase is enormous- I’d suggest the song Vinushka, the live 2018 version (it comes with English subtitles). Can guarantee that even if you don’t quite get the music you’ll be thoroughly entertained by the performance! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fbY7W_EgLDw.html
I’d give this several more listens. It’s one of my favorite songs from any band now but took me a while to totally get the progression. It’s like if you were able to listen to a fractal unfold. If you like Tool, it’s like listening to wings or Rosetta Stoned for the first time. Both top songs for me but took me a while to “get it.”
Nothing better than listening to little kids critiquing one of the greatest metal bands to ever exist (easily up there with Zeppelin....and as a kid who was born in 70 and worshiped Zep growing up, I would know)..and one that existed well before they were even born.
Yeah these lyrics are very existential, coming from the perspective of questioning life and everything around it. The guy had just become a father during the writing/recording which could be why these themes came to mind. He also presented this song as 'a piece of information' during a few tours, so i'd say it's pretty much up for grabs what one choose to take from it. There's a lot of metaphores going on. For songs with a lot more tasteful/emotional growls check out Moonlapse vertigo or Drapery falls. Cheers!
A growl is a very different type of vocal technique. It's typically lower and more guttural, like what Mikael does on this track. Screaming ranges from a roar to a full blown shriek that you'd hear on a black metal song or melodic death metal song
First time I heard this song was live and HOLY CRAP was it mean, beautiful, and brutal at the same time. The timing during those break downs were perfect. I totally disagree with your opinion on the double bass.
Yes Growling and Screaming are completely different...It's definitely something you gotta get used to, ONCE you do, you'll love and appreciate it...It'll take a while, several listens, check out older In Flames to get some more tastes of Growling
The point of the GROWLING (there's almost no screaming in death metal) here is to set the mood and the nature of the scene. It's easy to tell specially if you have the lyrics in front of you. Same for the clean vocals.
Good video. I wouldn’t recommend spending too much time reading into lyrics. When it comes to Opeth you should focus on the song structure, specifically how they handle transitions, and the unique note progressions. As always with progressive music unconventional time signatures are plentiful.
Yeah, this is for death metal fans who like ethereal wispy high brow songwriting but also the brutality of death metal. The singer stopped using growls in their more recent stuff and it has torn fans apart (also the songwriting is less death metal-y). I think you'd like their newer stuff more. I'd recommend The Wilde Flowers and then go backwards to their older stuff because you're not into the guttural vocals
People like this.. Who's react of something bigger than them level, for me as a fan of this band for a while now, it's really doesn't mean anything to me.. what's they are saying is It's just random things.. good luck listening to softer music, don't listen to music that you don't understand.. Listen to pop music it's fit you guys
I think Bleak would have been a better choice than GoP. Bleak is on an album by Opeth that has the best balance of growls and clean, in my opinion. Their best album hands down! But GUYS! One word. KATATONIA! My favourite band of all time....I swear you guys would LOVE "My Twin." Anything off The Great Cold Distance is prob the best way to start off.
please react to burden by opeth that's the masterpiece from them you guys would never regret it, that song changed my whole perception about opeth, that song will make you cry. please try it.
