It's in an ancient Roman amphitheater in Pompeii which is in southern Italy where the volcano Vesuvius (which is still active but in a state of "repose") destroyed the city back in 79 A.D. It was a whole performance with other songs as well. David was 25 here in 1971, and he played there again in 2016 when he was 70. Echoes was described as a musical conversation between David and Rick. When Rick passed in 2008, David would not play the song again.

Great infos, about 30km in the south of Naples/Napoli. As teacher I visited the ancient excavated city. But as fourteen years old greenhorn I was so positiv confused about this unusual innovative sound (with synthi) and all 4 members passionate and somehow involved in equal parts. The similar vocal was later used by Dark Side Of The Moon. At the same time I began the hear in the evening: Pink Floyd; Emerson, Lake & Palmer (similar synthi), 5-member.Genesis and Yes; otherwise daytime even Led Zeppelin/Deep Purple or Stevie Wonder/Elton John. All the best to You!!!!

An amazing performance for sure one of my all-time favorites performed in the ruins of Pompeii amphitheater not quite destroyed destroyed in 70 A.D. from one of the worlds super volcanoes Vesuvius. has all the bubbling cauldrons just like the yellow stone another massive super volcano. The only thing that irritates me about this live video they made back in the day is the cameraman mostly ignored Richard Wright and his fantastic work on keyboards

Pompeii was a city of 11,000 people who were buried alive under 15 feet of volcanic ash almost 2000 years ago. The entire 600 year old city and all of it's inhabitants were frozen in time, until they were excavated in more recent years. Haunting, tragic, and beautiful all at the same time.

Gilmour returned to this same amphitheater in 2016. You should really check out some of the songs from that performance. Somehow I think his guitar work is even better now that he's in his 70s. He doesn't perform Echoes since Richard Wright passed away a few years ago, but it's still an epic show. I believe the only rock concert (with an audience) to ever be held there, apart from the ghosts were were in attendance at this performance. The upper ring of the amphitheater is ringed with cauldrons of flames, it is just an amazing atmosphere.

Being a teenager and in my early 20s in the 1970s, this is the Pink Floyd we, (me and my friends), all knew at the time, these 4 guys. David Gilmour, guitar,.. Roger Waters, bass,.. Rick Wright, keyboards,.. and Nick Mason, drums From 1968 to 1985, these four guys made up Pink Floyd, that's the slice of time that Pink Floyd became a superstar Rock Band,... selling-out all over the world,.... everywhere they performed,... and the most successful Progressive Rock Band in history!. This was the Pink Floyd that me and my friends knew and saw live in concert, TWICE in the 70s!

I just happen to LOVE "Echoes". Yet, I love the most the live version from David Gilmour's "Live in Gdansk" DVD. Maybe because it's literally the last performance of that song EVER. A few months later, Rick passed away, and David declared he'd never play that song again... And it's a GREAT performance of that song. You don't even perceive the length of it, it just mesmerises you and at the end you kinda "wake up" and think to yourself "is it done already?". 🙂 I'd suggest you to make a comparison between the two. It's a very interesting thing to do... It gives you an insight on what changed along the years, and it's up to you to decide whether it's for the better or not. 🙂 To me, sure it is. 😁 Also the lyrics of this song are way more profound than many think. 🙂 Nice reaction as always. To me, who am an old grumpy git, it's such a pleasure to see a young man making such a journey in music from all eras. 🙂 See you at the next one. 🙂

Saucerful, Careful with that Axe, Set the Controls. Actually I recommend the whole movie not just the concert bits. See them at the diner. See them in the studio recording Dark Side! There is a lot of symmetry in pink floyd and its also circular so it can be looped. Symmetry in music has been used for many centuries. Pink Floyd use "Modes" as well as chord progressions in their music which colours their music, I think they had a tendancy to use "Phrygian Mode"

The Pompeii Amphitheatre was built roughly 2092 years ago. Luckily it was one of the first to be built out of stone as 149 years later it was buried by tons of volcanic ash and debris from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. You should really take a moment to search into the eruption of Vesuvius and the hollowed out forms of humans found later and how they were created. When David Gilmour returned to perform two concerts at the Amphitheatre in July 2016 as part of his Rattle That Lock Tour it was the first Public performance since it was buried 1,943 years ago. A concert you should try and enjoy. Peace/JT

The Roman Coliseum. It has been restored these days but Floyd played there when it was in ruins in 1970. These old amphitheaters had AMAZING sound reverb. That's why they played there. About 40% of this DVD was created afterwards and NOT at Pompeii as some of the reels were lost by the director. Those cuts are obvious. STILL, one of the greatest LIVE DVD's ever created. Pompei was a thriving city in the Roman empire that was destroyed when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 71 AD. The people tried to flee from the city but nearly all were unable to escape before the entire area was completely buried in the pyroclastic flow, volcanic ash, and searing hot gasses. Excavation started around 1740 (after first being discovered around 1710), and as it progressed, they discovered entire city blocks, roads, markets, several brothels, nobility estates, the amphitheatre where this was done, of course, and small cramped housing - with painted walls and frescoes, as well as people - all of which were seemingly frozen in time at the moment of their deaths. After I typed this, I found a link to a documentary about it - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NOEBVWc8crI.html

The reason there was no audience, is because at that point in time (1971) a bunch of bands had just put out or were about to put out movies showing their concert tours. So either songs from different cities during a tour, or just one city, but all of them showing crowds. Of course, Pink Floyd had to be different, so they went to Pompeii and played for the ghosts and spirits of all those Romans would died when the volcano buried them in ash.....and there were several local kids that were allowed to sit in the exit tunnels, as long as they stayed out of the camera's sight. Lucky kids!!!! Also, they decided to break up the song Echoes just so they could open and end the movie with parts 1 and 2, respectively.

Nice reaction. To round the series off you might want to react to Gilmour's performance of Echoes in Gdansk in 2006. It's the last full show with Richard Wright and also the last time Gilmour will ever play Echoes as he doesn't want to perform it without Richard. And I can understand it. At that point they gave been playing together some 40 years. Like great jazz bands of yesteryear who stayed together for decades, you cannot reproduce that kind of magical interaction with other musicians no matter how good they are. Gdansk shows them riffing off each other which is pure musical magic. The sound production is insanely good as well. Well worth your time.

Finally had to upgrade from VHS to DVD, which has two versions of the movie. For some reason, they added computer graphics to make it more "modern." Which sucked. The original is the best. The camera shots in this are bizarre at times. Often Gilmour is doing something momentous on guitar which they fail to capture. Other times, we get a slow pan across the front and even the back of the loudspeakers. Like, what were they thinking? It is a cool location Silas, but I guess there was no pressure because there were no crowds there. Also no visual effects for which they were known.

although it is said to have no audience there were some very lucky school children who snuck in and got to watch it, you cant see them on this footage but it is mentioned by those who were working there, one worker (i dont remember which one) has said that many many years later he met one of the kids at pompoeii

It's almost as if they are singing to the ghosts of the thousands of people who perished there in an instant and with no warning. Telling them that in the end it will be alright.
