At the time of Live Aid I was serving in the British Royal Marine Commandos in a refugee camp in Ethiopia. We listened to it on the radio. We were surrounded be the horror of the Famine, but when Queen came on the radio those poor soles who were there even reacted in a very positive way. I remember that a lot of us Royal Marine Commandos were crying watching some of the children dancing along, I'm teary eyed just remembering. I looked around at men I had fought alongside, who were tough, hardened Royal Marine Commandos who had fought a life and death war against Argentinian's in 82. By the end of Queen's set we were dancing with the children. It went along way to help build their trust in us. The famine is one of the two worst memories I have.

You asked what race Freddie was, he was born in Zanzibar (under British rule at the time) to parents of Parsi decent. His birth name was Farrokh Bulsara. He was sent to British style boarding school in India as a young child until his mid teens. In his late teens he, his sister and his parents immigrated to England to avoid the revolution for independence in Zanzibar, and the rest, as they say is history. Hope this helps. EDIT : Brian May (lead guitar) wrote We will Rock You, Freddie wrote We Are The Champions. In fact all the band members wrote hit songs, Including No1's, for the band.

Brian May's guitar, the famous Red Special was built by him and his father from an old table top and a fireplace mantel. A mantel was a shelf built across the top of a fireplace. He was 16. Queen's chief roady pulled the audio stops in the main BBC control room and replaced them so they would be louder than the other bands. This set has been regularly voted the top rock and roll set in a concert since the 1980's. I watched this live. And Freddy had a throat infection when he did the show.

Best description I saw from that day was one of the guys high on the Philadelphia management chain end of the gig. He looked out during Radio Ga Ga and saw the entire crowd doing the hand clap in sync.... to what was basically a giant television screen. Well, that and a great little aside from Brian talking about Freddie's impromptu playing with the crowd. Slightly paraphrased but: "You're there in front of 70,000 people who aren't your fans and millions of people worldwide on live TV, it'd be awful if you really screwed up. And there's Freddie going 'ehh what the hell ... Ay-oh!'".

Last year I watched the movie Bohemian Rhapsody with two of my (straight) musician friends, and then we spent the rest of the night looking up Queen videos (including the Live Aid concert), watching a music theorist analyze the structure of the song Bohemian Rhapsody, and discussing the movie, etc., etc. That's one great thing about music, especially when it's this good: It can transcend all the man-made barriers of race, class, religion, sexual orientation, political affiliation, nationality.

Yeah, he started work on his doctorate in 1971, but abandoned his studies in 1974 when his musical career had taken off; he re-registered in 2006 and submitted his thesis in 2007 (a year earlier than estimated) and he got his PhD in May 2008. He was lucky that not much research had been done in his area since the 70’s and it had only become trendy again in the 2000’s!
@angiepen
@angiepen 3 года назад
The lead guitarist is DOCTOR Brian May. :) He has a PhD in astrophysics (and has consulted with NASA) because being freakin' awesome at only one thing wasn't enough for him. Brian and Roger (Taylor, the drummer) were both good singers, and each sang lead sometimes. I love Roger's voice, personally. When you do Somebody to Love, live in Montreal in '81, pay attention to the last couple of minutes -- that's Roger keeping the song going, a steady core of vocals, while Freddie scats. And listen for Roger's final "Yeaaaaaaah!" at the end. :) Freddie had a huge vocal range, but Roger's falsetto went a bit higher. (Roger's also the "Galileo!" parts in Bohemian Rhapsody.) After Freddie died in '91, John Deacon (awesome bassist, great songwriter, sang rarely) retired to live a very private life, but Brian and Roger hired singers and bass players and kept on touring as Queen; Adam Lambert is their current vocalist. They're both in their 70s now, and still rocking the fuck out of stadiums all over the world, because they're just that fantastic.

Live Aid was a benefit concert held simultaneously in London and Philadelphia to raise money for the Ethiopian famine and all the biggest bands of the day were there. Each act had a 20 minute set and all the tickets had been sold out before it was even announced that Queen would be performing so the crowd weren’t your typical Queen fans but you can see how they reacted. Queen stole the show! Please check out Somebody to Love live in Montreal 1981. No auto tune, not even ear buds! Just pure, raw talent! Prepare to be amazed. And BTW Queen are from the UK. Freddie was educated at a British boarding school in India, hence his ‘posh’ accent

Freddie Mercury was warned by his doctor not to perform that day as well, he had a throat infection, making this performance even more impressive. Freddie Mercury is also self taught, he learned himself to play the piano, he learned himself how to sing, and I wouldn't be surprised if he learned himself how to play guitar. I just cant praise the man enough. Hes without doubt the best vocalist in rock history, and imho one of the best singers the world has ever seen. Ps the movie made out that Freddie Mercury had been diagnosed with HIV at the point of live aid, but he didn't he just had a bad throat.

Freddie was recovering from laryngitis during this concert, which is why he dodged a couple of the high notes. Plus he'd been suffering from painful nodules on his vocal cords since 1975, so it's nothing short of a miracle that he was always able to perform 100%, without a hint of what he was dealing with.

I love watching your discovery of Queen music 🎶 🎵 There's never going to be another Freddie Mercury or group as good as Queen. Freddie is a legend, when he went onto the stage that day he knew that he was ill and going to die 😢 Queen were a band ahead of the times in music 🎶 🎵 Each band member wrote songs for the group and each member played musical instruments. 🎼 This section of Live Aid is epic. Nobody could command an audience the way Freddie Mercury did. He died far too soon 😢 😔 💔 At least he's never going to be forgotten. 💛💛💛

The band practiced this set multiple times, which is why it is as tight as it is. There's a light at the front of the stage to warn the performers when their time is up - the light turns red as they hit the end chord.
