Teen Town - The Motown Story 1965
A very special episode of this Detroit-based, 60s teen dance show that salutes the Motown Record Corporation through words, music and film! Musical performances by the Marvelettes, the Supremes, the Temptations, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles and Stevie Wonder. Host Robin Seymour interviews Berry Gordy about the history of Motown and shows fabulous film footage of behind the scenes at Hitsville U.S.A. A very historical document of Motown's glory days.

I really enjoyed this. I was born in 1980, I remember the Motown 25 Anniversary & MJ introduced the world to the moonwalk. It was at that moment I fell in love with music I was only 4 or 5. TV was bigger & in color lol MJ's white glove was everything. It's crazy how music grows & how we grow as human beings. If music brings people together like this I wish America was just 1 big party with great feel good music, this would be a much happier place ☝🏾🏃🏾‍♀️💨💨💨

The way Motown Groomed their "Acts" back in the day still continued. In a Interview with Lou Pearlman, he "talked" to Smokey Robinson on how it was done back in the day. He used that formula with The Backstreet Boys, N'Sync, O-Town, and US5. Then in 2002 on Popstars: The Rivals they did the same thing when creating a Boy Band/Girl Group in the UK and the Three Judges were "Powerhouses". Geri Halliwell Former Spice Girl, Louis Walsh who was The "Father" of The Boy Band Movement launching the Careers of Boyzone & Westlife (Who did duets with Diana Ross & Mariah Carey) as well as Pete Waterman who along with his Partners Matthew Stock & Scott Aitken co wrote hits for everyone from Rick Astley, Banarama, Dead Or Alive, and Princess. The Girls became Girls Aloud who are the most successful Group to come out of Reality TV with 21 Top Tens, Four Number Ones, and Six Platinum Albums, One True Voice The Boyband didn't make it unfortunately. It's legacy also continues with K Pop as well.

This makes me so happy. You see, as a teenager in the early 80s, I could not stand the high tech soulless synthesizer banging and voice enhancers that passed for music in those days (which I later learned was forced on us by cheapskate producers). I was listening to things like this from a generation earlier and liked it better, but other kids weren't into that so I felt weird. Now, I love this stuff with no shame in my game, and music like this has stood the test of time. The joy in what they are doing is infectious.

Yes, that does look like the great Benny Benjamin on that. We can't forget the musicians who, on these recordings, were just as important as the singers but not given credit for their contributions. Benny, James Jamerson, Pistol Allen, Earl Van Dyke, Mike Terry, Paul Riser, Melvin Watson, Joe Messina, Ronnie White, Oriel Jones, Hank Cosby and many others. BTW, the alto player on the Supremes vid looks like Maurice King. He ran the Spinners live show, and trumpeter Gil Lasky ran the Temps show.

Never saw this before, but this special episode on the Motown Story was aired as part of "Teen Town", a short-lived syndicated music TV series hosted by Robin Seymour. It ran from 1965 until 1966 for just one season. It was the Detroit's version of "American Bandstand" but it was only in local syndication, but never carried it elsewhere in NYC. It has lots of great Motown artists as well as Berry Gordy, the producer and founder of Motown.

Interesting, I guess that a lot of markets had their own local “American Bandstand’ I’m from Cleveland OH and we had our local version called ‘Upbeat’ that aired on our local ABC network, sadly shortly after Otis Redding performed, him and his entourage left Cleveland and the plane crashed to their demise.

In addition to that, Berry Gordy was a great talent compared to Mitch Miller who was also a record producer and assistant for Columbia Records who had been produced lots of albums in the 50's and 60's as well as a series of "Sing-Along" albums and hosted his own TV show at the time. Berry Gordy was a true genius and he became the next Mitch Miller for Motown. As for the whole hour long show, it has some classic TV commercials in there.

Whenever a company grow to a certain and outside criminal elements become involved and for sure they will become involved businesses and especially Black businesses will be controlled undermined and slowly taken over. Business owners will not tell u that usually that's their secret. The move of Motown was a major major turn over and lost of control over Motown Record Co had the company stayed in Detroit the decline of the city of Detroit and surrounding areas would not have declined to a almost impossible state of state of promency. The Music industry and the Car Industry provided security and jobs for the people even those that had no education or very little education. What Barry Goody did for many people and the city of Detroit especially can never be forgotten. I must say one thing and that is Goody had a record for not fairly honoring contracts. DP

When they sang "My Girl", I see wy David felt like he sang better than everyone, he was standing alone. But when Marvin Gaye took Tammi Terell from David Rufin, He was upset and left, and sang "Since I lost my baby" and a whole album about Tami. David also started Hitting hard drugs and running with the wrong crowd that would pull him down. It was like a rolla coaster going up and down. But we still love David Rufin R.I.P. my brother david and Jimmie, Melvin, Eddie K.And Paul.R.I.P everybody.
@hydefmovement
@hydefmovement 10 лет назад
Where you getting your info from? first off "since i lost my baby" was written by Smokey Robinson. Ruffin had nothing to do with the creative side of that song besides bringing it to life on record. Second he was physically abusive to Tammi that's probably one reason why they broke up. not because Marvin stole Tammi away from him. And third there was never proof that Tammi and Marvin were a couple. a few artists on Motown said they had more of a brother sister type relationship.. it could be argued that David was the best singer in the group but they would'nt of had that tempts sound without Eddie, Paul, Melvin, and Otis.
@Whateverhelpsyou777
@Whateverhelpsyou777 10 лет назад
And Yes, David did abuse Tammi the same way he had abused drugs. But when we write musis, it all comes down to the one who sings that song to surface the airwaves.

K Moore Gladys did not leave the group until late 1967, not ‘65. Also, the only group to have a name change in ‘65 was The Miracles. Two other name changes in Motown occurred in 1967 for The Supremes and Martha and the Vandellas. No other name changes happened other than those three. Furthermore, even if Gladys would have remained with The Marvelettes, her name would not have been added to the front of the group. Wanda became the primary lead vocalist of the group and lead vocalist for all A-side singles in 1964 after “Too Many Fish in the Sea.” Gladys would only have B-side leads and lead vocals on certain album cuts from that point on.
