Damn - I just got mine in today and i'm so glad I found this vid. This is easily the best demo to give me ideas of how to use it I could have asked for.
i actually really like the OP1 workflow, but really did not like the synths. i would track into it using the input jack, but the quality was really poor. ended up selling it
im an 8 year op1 user/fan ..... to be honest i was looking forward and very excited to the new feature but for a 10 year update, this was really disappointing...and its no even about the price! i would pay 2k for a real op1 on steroidsor, actually a op2.0 but this was definitely not it! this is just a op1.5 with some updates that could not be done via software.....i still think TE is a great company and still will keep using my op1 OG until we actually get a op2.0 in 10 years maybe who knows!
I love this thing but oh man do I wish they just added a shit load of fx. I just bought a Korg Wavestate for 400 bucks and I swear it has like 30-40 different reverbs, and an insane amount of other fx. They easily could have added similar stuff if not more at this price point. I get the idea of a stripped back workflow but why for the price.
Greed & hype, when you think of all the great gear you could get for this price? This entire wave of OP product releases and business model is to try and establish themselves as an Apple style must have niche product, Going have to work a lot harder on the GASlighting to ignite most folks GAS
@@tColorsinspacerecordings true...but you can do everything this thing can do and a ton more with a 10 year old MacBook and a bunch of free plugins. But I guess you don't get to twiddle knobs and look cool.
*Frantically searches radio signal amplifiers* Nah but in all seriousness, anybody who says "Karl Marx was right" and then trys to sell you a wee box for 2000 quid needs to put the crack pipe & chai latte down and have a word with themselves. Total jokers tbh.
Teenage engineering not now have prices based on greed but have THE WORST reputation for customer service lots of . Examples ignore peoples issues until their warranty runs out… the forums are full of these issues. Or one word rude reply’s to prplems- they really don’t care.
I sometimes wonder if part of the warranty issue is that to receive warranty you need to buy direct from TE. Maybe this is not the issue, but I wonder, cause I have never had any issues with TE support.
A lot of you are missing the point. There's nothing else on the market with this physical workflow, small form factor, and set of features that you just can sit with in your lap and play with. And if it's so easy to do a unit like this - why are the op-1 still the only one of its kind?
Ok, but do you think it's worth $2000? Don't you think they're taking advantage of an already niche community? Let me remind you that the original OP-1 first sold for $1,299 (which at the time was severely overpriced)... Nobody cares about the point of a device when the people marketing and selling it increases the price 40% over its original value while adding almost nothing new to it all because the used market was vastly overestimating this toy. A better alternative would pretty much be an iPad, a device that is just as portable but can do so much more than this thing. But keep simping for Teenage Engineering
Pfft, most of these "improvements" were things that should have been in the OP-1 in the first place. The price is nothing short of cynical on TE's part, and still not basic things like aftertouch or velocity modulation. It doesn't play well wth other pieces of gear, it's still just a spendy posh toy.
Obviously a one of a kind product, but yeah... the price is too high, two grand USD is too much, I could see 1499 being easier to swallow... ideally 999, but have to be realistic.
I understand the hype Jack, but maybe not fully because for the price of this thing, I could buy a high-end laptop with a mini set of keys and do way more.
My feelings exactly. Great little device but the elitist pricing decisions are, frankly, insulting. I can buy two or three great sounding synths and a couple effects pedals, or a very nice vintage synth for the $3000 this little gizmo costs here in Canada. I know the material and manufacturing costs don't warrant such a high retail price. It's all about marketing to a specific buyer. That buyer is clearly not me.
Iphone/Ipad and nanokeys pro runs circles around the Op-1. That's if you only use GarageBand. Endless possibilities with AUM and huge library of cheap/free music apps. I have some decent hardware synths. They work in tandem with the soft apps and control. everything in AUM. In a mix hard to tell the hardware from software.
If I was an OP-1 devotee, and it had really helped me create songs, and/or I had a stupid amount of money in the bank, then maybe I would buy one. It is not just a toy, and many people love it and can make some excellent music with it. However, the most troubling things are the myriad anecdotes of TE’s appalling customer service and the apparent contempt they have for their high-spending customers.
I am listening to all of your videos, they are great. But I will pass this one. Asking $ 1,999 USD for this device is absurd, criminal, and frankly insulting from this company. Overhyped, overpriced. Any other synth company can come up with the same list of features, for less than half the price.
If any other synth company can come up with the same list of features, for less than half the price, they should and hopefully they will, too. Btw I agree that this thing is way overpriced but saying it's insulting reminds me what Ricky Gervais says about Twitter: it's like going into a town square, seeing a notice on a noticeboard saying "Guitar Lessons" and going: "BUT I DON'T WANT GUITAR LESSONS!".
@@AMBMusic It is insulting to me because it is disrespectful or scornfully abusive to ask for so much money for the list of features they are advertising.
Yes the price is insane, but in terms of inspiration and immediacy it’s hard to find anything similar. People are happy to shell out $3000 on a Moog, but I would go out on a limb and say that in recent years the OP1 would have inspired or made it’s way onto more tracks than most synths out there. And so who knows, even with this crazy price tag, maybe $ per inspired track might actually not look too bad? Jack seems more excited about this than any other synth I’ve seen him demo and that speaks volumes.
I can attest to this. I have quite a few analog synths (Moog and Dave smiths / sequentials) but I play my OP1 more than anything. I’ll be upgrading to the op1 field. It’s like a Leica camera, the cost doesn’t make sense until you click with it
How far does the 256MB memory go with this in a practical context when you're out and about e.g. if I was away for a fortnight and wanted to lay down a load of ideas, would I be in danger of reaching storage capacity?
Everything the OP-1 should have been in the first place with an even more eye watering price tag than the original. Incremental and BASIC upgrades on an already sparsely featured bit of kit. Now with the added “Field” range if you’d like to add on other basic features at outrageous prices. Boo hiss boo. ✌🏻
@@geoffwebber8272 there's a channel called playpm on yt that's worth checking out for people who are interested in free or almost free alternatives to hardware gear. Obviously there are benefits to hardware(1 knob per function/aesthetics etc) but it's nice to know that there are free/low cost set ups.
I was waiting for this one simply because of Jack's enthusiasm for the original. Of course there are going to be haters but once you use it, it's priceless. Personally, I've gotten tons of work because of the op-1 and will continue making music with the op-1f. In the end, we all know it doesn't matter what you use so to each his/her own.
Thanks for stopping by Grady. Really appreciate it, frickin’ love your videos by the way - awesome to see you’ve got your hands on a Field already fine Sir!! 🙏
Amazing editing on this Falcon! The design of the field is brilliant - The speed at which Jack moves around it is like he's mind-melded with it! Nice one 💙
So many improvements over the original. Whatever your view on the price is, this is a brilliant little device. Having seen this I sort of remember from owning an OP-1, there wasn't really any LFOs to assign to parameters, was that the case? and is it still?
Not the case. Hitting “4” while in synth or drum mode brings up the modulation. You can use an LFO, accelerometer, the audio input, etc. and assign is to any parameter of the synth or FX.
If it was half the price they’d sell more than twice as many… well that’s what I used to say. I suppose now I have to say if it was a quarter the price they’d sell more than four times as many…
Had been waiting for this review Jack!! I have been following Jack's awesome piano lessons on this channel too. @Jack can you please do some piano/chord lessons for smaller midi keyboards like the OP-1 where you do not have the entire range of keys; I have noticed you sometimes doing two finger chords on the OP-1 videos. Thanks in advance!
haha imagine having 2000 to spend and not buy a juno 106 or even a juno x ,synths with iconic sounds and you buy this plastic shit with flat toy synth sounds and graphics for 10yolds lol
@@wurlinnawurl Sure, Zen Core is a good sounding VA engine, but it shouldn't be used to "impersonate" other synths via ABM parameter templates when Roland already have ACB for that, which will do component level modeling. When you make something in that shell, that looks very much like a Juno.. it's madness to then not use your best Juno engine in there.. I think ABM could work better if it was a system feature open to end users with Zen Core synths, so we could play about with giving the engine different characters and save those as ABM patches
@@Wagoo juno x has aaallll the iconic sounds and more,it doesnt have "its sound" but thats the way its made as you know.for my ears sounds are the same to the originals.I like system-8 its an amazing synth too with just one problem : its interface ,its so ugly i cant work with it,doesnt inspire me when i sit in front of it :(
This sometimes happens with music gear, they try and improve a classic and lose what makes it great..the field sounds too clean and doesn't have the original op 1 s attitude..
I would really love to have one but at close to TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS for the OP-1 and almost THREE THOUSAND DOLLARS for the OP-1 Field, I just don't see that happening. Ever.
There's no denying it's expensive. It's the price of a very capable laptop. But, like many products from Teenage Engineering, whether it be their Pocket Operators (which are insanely good) or their smaller OP-Z sequencer, they make great portable music gear. Yes, a lot of this is from a brand with very strong minimalist aesthetic and high Apple-esque prices, but their products make great music and have a lot of thought put into them. I have not owned a OP-1 original, but experimented with it when it was first released and it was apparent it's a very capable, feature rich machine. It appears that the OP-1 Field is a very worthy successor/update to the original in every way.
OP1f is completely worth it. Makes me happy. And if it means I will now buy less crap that’s quickly shelved, making me feel un-happy, it’s a small price to pay.
